Edgar Allan Poe | The Teacher

You walked into your last class of the day, English, and there at the front of the room was your new teacher, Mr. Poe.

As you and the other students entered the room, he made direct eye contact with you, taking mental note of all the students present. The once rowdy classroom suddenly quieted itself, the chatter ceasing to exist when they spotted him with his arms crossed, leaning against his desk. He surveyed the room, his gaze sharp and calculating, before landing on you once again.

As you settled into your seat in the front row, his eyes lingered on you, studying your every move. A hint of curiosity flickered in his gaze, his interest piqued by your choice of seat, right in front of him. He pushed himself off the desk and began to slowly walk around, his steps measured and controlled.

"Hello, class. I am Mr. Poe, your new English teacher. I hope to get to know all of you as well. Now let's start with attendance." Poe's voice was flat and cold as he spoke.

He started to read out the names on the list, his voice monotone and devoid of any real enthusiasm. As he called out each name, students would respond with a "Here" or a "Present." The entire time, his cold gaze would move around the room, taking in each student, and resting on you for a fraction longer than the others.

"Y/N?"

As you raised your hand and said "Present," his eyes flicked towards you once again. A slight smirk tugged at the side of his lips as he heard your voice, before quickly fading away, his face once against assuming a serious demeanor. He continued with attendance, ticking off the names on his list until he reached the end.

The class soon settled down as he began his lesson, his voice taking on a more animated tone as he delved into the topic of different styles of writing. As he lectured, he noticed your attention was solely on him, listening intently. A flicker of satisfaction crossed his face, but he quickly pushed it away, still maintaining a cool and distant demeanor.

As the class drew to a close, the volume in the room started to rise, students chatting enthusiastically amongst themselves as they prepared to go home. Poe let out a sigh, his patience beginning to wear thin. He gave the class a stern look, hoping to calm them down but they just continued with their chattering.

He crossed his arms and leaned against his desk, his eyes narrowing as he observed the class commotion. The noise was becoming overwhelmingly loud and he was starting to lose patience. He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to keep his emotions in check.

As the bell rang, signaling the end of class, the students immediately sprang up from their seats, grabbing their bags and rushing towards the door. They all seemed desperate to be the first ones out, pushing and shoving their way through the narrow doorway.

Poe watched in annoyance as the students stampeded out of the room, pushing and jostling each other. He let out a frustrated sigh, feeling exhausted from the chaotic end-of-class commotion. The once-organized classroom was now a mess of abandoned papers and desks pushed out of alignment.

Seeing everyone rushing out of the room, you decided to wait until the chaos subsided before getting up from your seat. Finally, as the classroom quieted down, you stood up and began packing your things slowly and calmly.

As you looked around, you noticed a few students had stayed behind after class, probably for the literature club. They were already chatting and laughing amongst themselves, eagerly discussing books and other literature-related topics.

As you packed your things, Poe's eyes flicked towards you, noticing your slow and methodical pace distinct from the rest of the class. A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips as he observed your calm demeanor amongst the chaos.

The room was almost empty now, and you were about to leave when suddenly, you heard Mr. Poe call out to you.

"Y/N, can I speak to you for a minute?"

As you approached Poe, the members of the literature club nearby didn't pay you any attention, engrossed in their own conversation. Poe glanced at them quickly before gesturing for you to take a seat.

"I just wanted to have a quick word with you," he started, his voice quiet and soft so that the other students wouldn't overhear. You settled into the seat, curiosity piqued as to why he wanted to talk to you.

"About what, sir."

He leaned against his desk, crossing his arms. "I've noticed that you've been one of the more attentive students in class," he said, his gaze focused on you. "So I wanted to ask, do you have any interest in writing?"

You smiled up at him and nodded. "Yes I have, I also like reading a lot."

A small smile tugged at the corner of Poe's lips as you nodded, confirming your interest in writing. He raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Reading and writing, hm? And is there any particular genre you're drawn to?"

"I really like fiction, horror, and mystery books."

"Horror and mystery, that's interesting." He leaned in a little closer, his eyes sparkling with interest. "Do you have a favorite book or series?"

"There's too many to pick just one!"

Poe chuckled at your response, enjoying your enthusiasm. "I suppose that's true. There are a lot of great books out there. It's hard to pick just one favorite, isn't it?"

He paused for a moment, studying your face before asking, "You know, I have a little club that meets once a week to discuss literature and writing. Would you be interested in joining it?"

"I'll think about it." You smiled softly, already liking your new teacher.

Poe smiled back, his cold demeanor momentarily melting away under your gentle smile. "I hope you'll consider it," he said, his voice almost warm. He watched as you got up to leave, his gaze lingering on you for a moment before he looked away.

The following day, you entered the classroom for your English class, expecting it to be like any other day. But as soon as you walked in, you noticed Poe sitting at his desk, looking particularly cheerful compared to his usual cold demeanor.

As you took your seat, he looked up, his eyes meeting yours, and a smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Good morning, Y/N," he said, his voice surprisingly cheery.

"Morning, Mr. Poe."

He chuckled lightly at your reply, his smile widening. "You can just call me Poe, you know," he said, his voice still maintaining its unusually warm tone. He leaned back in his chair, studying you.

The other students filed into the room, chatting amongst themselves as they took their seats. Poe's cheerful demeanor seemed to catch their attention, and a few of them looked at him with surprise, unaccustomed to his good mood.

"What's got you so happy, Mr?" One of the students asked.

"Maybe he's in loveee." Another laughed.

Some of the students laughed at the second student's comment, snickering amongst themselves. Poe shot a glare at them, his good mood fading slightly. "Don't be ridiculous," he snapped, his voice back to its usual cold tone.

But despite his denial, a slight hint of pink dusted his cheeks, betraying his true feelings. He quickly looked away, trying to compose himself. He mentally cursed himself for letting his emotions show through.

"I'm curious too y'know." You asked the teacher.

As you mentioned your curiosity, Poe's gaze snapped back to you, surprise clear in his eyes. He hadn't expected you to directly ask him about it. he paused for a moment, a conflicted look on his face before sighing.

"It's nothing important," he said, attempting to remain casual.

Poe stood in front of the class, addressing the students. "Just a quick announcement," he began, looking around the room. "Next week, we will be taking a trip to the library for a little project we'll be doing."

A murmur of excitement went through the classroom as everyone started whispering amongst themselves, speculating about the project. Poe watched them for a moment, a small smirk creeping onto his face, enjoying the anticipation he had ignited in his students.

Poe resumed his teaching, launching into the day's lesson. However, he noticed that his usual commanding presence wasn't effective in keeping the students focused.

Instead, they whispered amongst themselves, speculating about the library trip and the project. He let out a sigh, his annoyance growing.

You ended up zoning out as well for most of the class, too tired to learn.

As the class ended, you approached Poe's desk, noticing him tidying up his papers as he prepared to leave. He looked up as you neared, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

"Y/N," he greeted, setting his papers aside. "What can I do for you?"

"May you tell me what got you happy? I must say I'm rather curious." You asked, unable to get your mind off the subject.

Poe paused for a moment, surprised by your directness. He looked at you, his gaze searching your face, trying to determine if you were teasing him. But your genuine curiosity was evident, and he let out a soft chuckle.

"It's really nothing too important," he said, though the color on his cheeks betrayed him.

The news stunned you as Poe revealed his upcoming marriage to Ranpo. A swirl of emotions washed over you, leaving you speechless for a moment. It seemed incredibly sudden, but perhaps it was something that had been developing quietly in the background, unbeknownst to you.

"Wow, that's amazing!"

"Thank you very much. May I ask...would you like to be our flower girl?

"WA!! I uh. that sounds like fun!" You smiled, getting a tad emotional.

And so you were the best student and flower girl at the wonderful wedding.
