Part 07
The trip to Gringotts was fairly uneventful.
Five, Diego and Klaus all got to see their very first goblin, who's name was Griphook.
He was a short little thing with sharp teeth that rivalled a lion's, nose overly large and ears pointed like an elve's.
They weren't hostile, but they weren't exactly Mary Poppins either.
The bank was large and white, standing out greatly against the small, pathetic looking stores.
The large doors had polished brass handles, which gleamed in the light of the sun.
It was truly extravagant, not a single withering weed grew out of the concrete Gringotts sat upon.
In fact, there were no cracks either.
Magic.
Professor Dippet pulled out a letter as they walked out of the large bank, similar to the one Luther gave Five earlier, out of his large robe pockets, skimming through it quickly.
"Waait, is that a-" Klaus gasped dramatically after half an hour, bringing his hands to his cold cheeks as he finally realised something. "-a wand?!"
The near-bald man smiled again, twirling his wand between his fingers before putting it back into his pocket.
"Yes it is Klaus. Now Five, do you have your letter?" Dippet asked.
Five pulled out the coffee brown letter from his inner breast pocket, nodding.
"Yes, yes I do."
"Good, now would you like me to escort you around and help pick out your items?" Five gave an innocent smile, revealing two cute dimples.
"No thank-you, I think I'll do quite alright with my two brothers here." Dippet grinned again, patting Five's shoulder heavily with his pruny hand.
"Of course. Now you should purchase your wand first - Ollivander's shop is the place to go for that. You'll get your books at Flourish Blotts and your other equipment at the apothecary's, your robes and gloves will be fitted for you at Madame Malkin's. I shall be waiting for you back at the leaky cauldron. Any question Five?" The man explained and asked in his feeble voice.
Five shook his head, giving him another grin.
"No Professor." The man smiled once more, and left the three to their own devices.
"Hey Five, Klaus. Let's get the wand first." Diego held up the pouch filled with coins, gold, silver and bronze all different sizes and weights.
It rattled as he did so, scratching against each other's metal surfaces.
They navigated through the busy crowd and located the shop entitled 'Ollivanders: Makers of fine wands since 382 b.c'.
But not before Klaus spun around in a circle and shouted 'I LOVE THIS PLACE!' after finding out that they had an alcohol store in the middle of the alley.
Through the dusty window they would see a single, brown wand laying on a faded purple cushion.
Somewhere in the depths of the store, a bell tinkled, the sounds of footsteps shuffling closer as the three newcomers entered the cozy shop.
The three looked around the small place, thousands of tiny thin boxes stacked on top of each other neatly, only stopping when the pile went up to the ceiling.
It was warm, and comfortable.
The air thick with, something.
Seemingly buzzing with life.
A soft voice called out, making Klaus jump with excitement.
"Good afternoon."
An old man with wide, pale eyes that shone like moons stood before them.
"Afternoon sir." Five said, nodding.
The old man grinned, wrinkles forming at the corner of his eyes.
"Ahh yes, you must be Five Hargreeves. Dippet told me you would be visiting. Fifth year, yes?" The old teen nodded, smiling.
"Well - Mr Hargreeves. Let me see." He pulled his own wand, which was dark brown.
"Which is your wand arm?" Five held his right arm in front of him, answering with his gesture.
"That's it, keep holding it up." A measuring tape was taking his measurements, elbow to shoulder, wrist to elbow, shoulder to the floor.
The measuring device seemed to be operating on it's own, with the help of magic of course.
Ollivander pulled down several boxes, flitting around the shelves and explaining how every wand has a different core - and has no twin.
"That will do." The man said, measuring tape falling onto the floor into a crumpled heap.
"Here, try this one. Beechwood and unicorn hair, eight inches. Give that a little wave." Five traced a 5 in the air with one fluid movement, but the man snatched it out of his hand before he could finish the tail.
He placed another one in Five's hands.
"Oakwood and phoenix feather, nine inches."
Once again Five drew the number 5 in the air, only to have the wand taken off his hands.
This process lasted for a good ten minutes, Five drawing a number in the air and Ollivander snatching his wand and replacing it with another.
A large mess of boxes littered the room, making it feel a lot smaller than it already was.
Sweat forming at the collar of Five's shirt as the temperature increased steadily.
In the end Ollivander sighed, leaning on the wooden counter with his wispy eyebrows furrowed as if he were in deep thought.
Then his silvery eyes widened, walking over to Five briskly and muttering to himself.
"Wait, what if... no that not possible - is it? - no it's entirely possible. Five, I need you to do something for me." He plucked a box out of the stack.
"Look at this, and imagine it moving. I know it sounds silly but try anyways. Think wingardium leviosa."
Five stared at the box boredly, repeating in his head the phrase wingardium leviosa twice in his head. The thin box did nothing at first, just sitting there and being, well, a box.
Until it started floating in mid-air, rising slowly but surely.
Klaus gasped and shuffled out from under an old, wooden chair that he was hiding under.
Walking over towards it and swiping it like a cat.
The box just swerved and moved higher, floating out of his reach.
Ollivander's features wrinkled like a walnut, a smile covering his face - eyes shining.
"Fascinating."
