Kite

I sip my hot chocolate. It's amazing.

"Who made this?" I ask Dove.

"Phoenix, most likely." She shrugs, not looking up from her phone.

"Ah." I say. I look over at where he's staring at me from the till. Phoenix seemed the interesting sort, but I knew he wouldn't do anything. He could stare at me all he wanted, all I really cared about was if he would ask me for an autograph at this point.

Obviously I'd say no.

I cast my eyes away from Phoenix and glance at Dove. Her hair frames her face as she sips her drink and scrolls on her face.

I still can't believe I made her laugh. I never thought that would ever happen. And she smiled at me in the library. A small one, but a smile is a smile.

She also caught me, staring at her bum, which I'm very embarrassed and ashamed about.

I'd rather not think about that.

I didn't know what was happening. I was dreading working with Dove in the assembly, but now-

I don't think I mind so much.

I finish my drink, and look at Dove, who's also finished.

She looks at me.

I look back.

I cough. "Should we make a start?" I needed to stop coughing awkwardly around her.

Dove waves the idea away with her hand. "We have 2 months. We have plenty of time."

"We have 2 months for a reason." I argue. Although, to be honest, one day didn't seem to be much of a difference for me.

Dove gives me a look. "We both know you don't want to do anything today. Don't argue with me."

I shrug. "Then what do we do?"

"We should hang with Ali and Rocky." Dove suggests.

I frown at that. "Wont they want to be together?"

Dove shakes her head. "Ali says she's fine with it, it's only one day."

"I guess." I say. "Where are they?"

"Park."

I nod, and get up. Dove follows me, and we exit Terry's. I hear her say bye to Phoenix. Something about him put me off.

We walk to the park. I put my hands in my pockets and walk silently. I didn't know what to say. It was easier to be rude to Dove, to insult her, but it was even harder to see her upset. I just felt really guilty.

It's crazy to think that only a day ago she had slapped me. It felt like time ago. And now we were having normal conversations.

Like normal people.

We finally reach the park. I spot Rocky and Alina sat on a bench together, and I tap Dove on the shoulder. She looks at me, and I point at them.

"ALI!" Dove shouts loudly. I jump up in shock.

"I think she can hear you." I grumble.

Dove snorts. "Okay, Mr Grumpy." I roll my eyes, and walk over to Rocky.

"Kite." Rocky says, dabbing me up.

"DOVEYYY!" Alina shouts at Dove, and I nearly roll my eyes again, until I realise Rocky is standing right in front of me and Alina might not be as nice as Dove.

Wait.

Did I just call Dove nice?

Alina looks at me, and then nods at me, although her eyes were still a bit stern. I mean, it was an improvement.

Maybe things could be better. Maybe I didn't have to be hated.

"Bro." Rocky puts his arm around me and steers me away from the girls. "I think I'm going crazy."

"I could guess why." I smirk, running a hand through my hair.

Rocky removes his arm and pushes me. "Shut up. She's right there."

"And?"

Rocky gives me a look, to which I roll my eyes at.

"Tell me what happened." I say, as we walk around the park. It's not massive, but big enough that I couldn't see Dove and Alina anymore. I knew they were sat on a bench, though.

"We were actually here the whole time. We sat on the bench, and we were talking about the project, and then we kind of drifted and started talking about each other. We were getting so close, I put my arm behind her." Rocky speaks quickly, and also very dreamily.

I laugh at him. "You're so fricking obsessed!" It's my turn to push him away.

"And you wouldn't if you had your own gorgeous girl?"

"Of course I would." I roll my eyes. "It's just funny to see you like this."

"I'll laugh in your face when I see you staring at your girl next time." Rocky smirks.

"And who's my girl?" I snort out.

"Hmmm." Rocky thinks. "How about the girl your working with?"

We turn the corner, heading back to Alina and Dove, as I cough.

"Excuse me?" I say in shock.

"I was just joking." Rocky pats my back.

"Bad joke." I say, but my mind is racing. Me and Dove would never happen. Our families hate each other, and it would be so weird around school as well. Plus, I don't think I'd ever like her like that.

I think.

We reach Dove and Alina. Rocky straightens his back immediately. I nearly laugh out loud.

Dove looks at me, and gives me a small smile. I nod at her back. My face was probably shocked again.

As it should be. Only yesterday she smacked me across the face. Now we were acting normal?

Our families definitely couldn't see that.

Rocky goes and sits down next to Alina. I smirk at him, and then look between him and Dove. There was a space next to both Rocky and Dove, but I didn't want to ruin Rocky's moment.

I look at Dove, and point my head at the space next to her. She nods her head back. I go towards her, and then slouch on the bench.

"So what are we doing tomorrow?" I ask, at an attempt to start a conversation. Alina and Rocky were talking about something.

"I don't know. Do you want to my number so you can message me?"

I nearly say yes, but then I think that if my mum or dad saw Dove's name in my contacts, they would definitely freak out.

I shake my head. "We can't risk our parents finding out."

Dove stays quiet for a moment, then suggests something. "We could save each other as something else?"

I nod. "That could work. How about our emojis? A kite for me and a dove for you."

Dove shakes her head. "No, that's too obvious."

"Random name generator?" I say wearily. It sounded like a stupid idea but what else could we do?

"Sure." Dove nods, pulling out her phone. I also pull out my phone, and repeat my phone numbers out, for Dove to type in.

"Okay." Dove says, going to Google to find a random name generator. She clicks on the first option, and then puts in the gender as male. I watch as she presses 'generate name', and the name loads.

"Jordin." Dove snorts.

I shake my head. "Do it again."

"Alright, Mr Picky." I glare at her.

She does it again. "Tyrone." She states.

I nod my head. "That's decent." Dove snorts at that, and then heads back to WhatsApp, where she types my name in as 'Tyrone.' She presses 'Save Contact', and messages me a, 'Hey'.

I get the notification on my phone, and head to WhatsApp to save her number. I look at Dove, and she goes to generate a name for herself.

"Sherie." Dove makes a face. "I'm going to do it again."

I snort. "Now who's picky." I state. I wait for her to redo it.

"Jeanette." Dove says. I nod at her, and type in 'Jeanette' on my phone, then save her contact.

As we're finishing, Rocky gets up. "Kite, I'll see you later, yeah?"

I nod at him, and dab him up, before he leaves. But of course he has to glance at Alina first.

Alina clears her throat when Rocky is gone. "Dove, I kind of need to go as well."

Dove turns around to her friend. "Aw, okay." She says, standing up to hug her. Alina squeezes her tightly, and then walks away. In the opposite direction as Rocky, to make it clear.

I cough. "Actually, I'm going to go the toilet." I tell Dove.

She nods at me. "I'll wait her. Come back, though." She adds wearily.

I look at her. "Why would I run off?"

Dove just shakes her head, and signals me to go.

I walk over to the park toilets. They aren't the best, but I've seen worse. I do my business, wash my hands, and then exit.

Out of the corner of my room, I see a little girl crying on the side pavement. I stand in shock, and then realisation hits me. I run towards her, and bend down to speak to her.

"Are you alright?" I say softly.

The girl shakes her head violently. She looks young, only about 7 or 8.  "I'm lost!" She wails. "I'm looking for my sister. She makes to wipes her eyes, but she only does it's with  her left, as her right is covered with an eyepatch.

What did this remind me of?

"Would you like me to help you find your sister?" I ask her gently. She nods violently, and I reach my arms out to carry her-

"WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING!" Someone shouts. I turn around in shock.

It's Dove.

I look back at girl, who shouts out, "Dove!", and runs towards her. She picks the little girl up.

Oh no.

That was Elizabeth, Dove's sister. The one I hurt. Accidentally.

Dove storms over towards to me. "What the HECK do you think you're doing!"

"She was lost. I was going to help her." I say nervously.

"ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?" Dove shouts. I wince. I mean, I can see why she would react like that, but I was changed! Why did everybody believe otherwise?

"I didn't know it was her, Dove!" I argue back.

Dove laughs sarcastically. "Didn't you? Did you not see the eyepatch on her face?!"

The eyepatch. Covering a mark I had made.

"I didn't know." I whisper softly.

"Unbelievable." Dove laughs again. She edges towards me. "You're a monster, Kite. You did this to her. You started it! You're the reason all this is happening! Look at her! You! Did! That!" Dove spits out at me, and time stops.

This is what's I'd been hearing my whole life. This is the pain I had to go through, the guilt of what I'd done as a child. People still couldn't forgive me for it.

My face hardens. I give Dove a dirty look, and then look at Elizabeth, crying quietly in Dove's arms. My face softens, and a wave of guilt rushed me. I did that.

Maybe they were right.

"Don't you dare look at her." Dove hisses at me. I glance back at her once more, and then turn around and walk off.

I messed up. Bad.

Maybe I should just go run away, like everyone wanted me too.

It sounded like a good idea.
