16 | not my kind of fun
He had hoped to sleep in late that morning.
After a late night, all Yoongi could ask for was to not have to get out of bed until at least noon.
Needless to say, waking up at eight a.m. to the sound of his phone ringing, followed by an aggressive knocking at the door, did not please the twenty-three-year-old male.
Yoongi threw his covers off grumpily and reached for the phone on his night stand. It was still ringing. He glared at the screen.
Hoseok.
Already knowing it was also Hoseok who was knocking, Yoongi hung up immediately and marched out of his room and over to the front door. He then unlocked it and yanked it open.
Surely enough, there was Hoseok. Dressed in a flamboyant rainbow sweater and matching scarf, messy, barn red hair crowning his forehead, and most conspicuously of all a mile-wide grin on his honeyed complexion.
Yoongi was almost tempted to slam the door in his face.
"Hug time, Snuggles!"
"No-!"
Too early. It was much too early for Yoongi to handle Hoseok's bursting energy and strong desire for platonic intimacy - sadly, that meant it was also too early for him to fight it, so Yoongi had no choice but to succumb to the arms which constricted him ever so tightly.
"Min Snuggles, you missed me, didn't you??" The redhead asked eagerly, giggling as he buried his friend's head deeper into his shoulder. Yoongi couldn't catch his breath till Hoseok finally pulled away.
"Didn't miss this," he grumbled. Hoseok only laughed at this.
"Sure you did. More importantly, I didn't eat breakfast!"
"Oh, a pity. There's this really nice diner I've tried recently, and it's not too far, so if you start walking now you'll get there in no time."
"Yoongi, I'm wounded."
"And I'm freaking tired."
"Thank you for not swearing."
Yoongi grabbed a pillow from his couch to throw at Hoseok, who burst into even more giggles. "Shut up, you're worse than Guk."
"I dare you to say one nice thing to me."
"I dare you to show a bit of respect when visiting someone's home."
"I'll take off my shoes."
"That's a start."
From an outside point of view, it may have seemed like Yoongi was genuinely annoyed about the unexpected visit, and sure, he would definitely have preferred a heads-up and maybe another half hour to sleep in, but deep down he was happy to see Hoseok again. It simply took a bit of effort each time to adjust to his friend's lively behavior and buoyant personality. Even compared to Jeongguk, the redhead was quite a step up to Yoongi.
"I guess you came here for your Christmas gift?" Yoongi asked once his friend kicked his shoes off by the door. "It's not much, so lower your expectations."
"Nahhhh, that's nonsense, Yoongles." Hoseok waved his hand dismissively, stepping up to the other boy once again. His smile still stretched from ear to ear. "You've never let me down. Besides, like you say, it's the thought that counts, isn't it?"
"Mm."
With that, Yoongi lazily spun himself around and walked back to his room to retrieve the small gift bag he had been holding on to for Hoseok. Nothing extravagant, just like he had told his friend, but regardless he knew the boy would appreciate it all the same. Hoseok was a grateful person.
"Aww, you shouldn't have." Grinning with delight, the redhead extended his hand to accept the bag as soon as Yoongi stepped back into the living room. All at once he pulled out the tissue paper and dropped it to the floor. A dramatic gasp was soon drawn from his mouth.
"It's not anything special, don't-"
"Yoongi, I love 'em!"
Without waiting another moment, Hoseok released his hold on the gift bag and let it drop to where the tissue paper was, pulling out the small box inside - a pair of custom-made headphones, designed to look like Pokéballs. Hoseok didn't hesitate to open the box and try them on.
"They're comfortable, too." He beamed. "These weren't expensive, were they??"
"No, like I said-"
"Thank you, Yoongi."
He couldn't even act quick enough to decline Hoseok's hug - not that he would have be able to turn him down, anyway, as there was a valid reason for his nickname. Min Snuggles, softie to the core.
"I got you something, too," Hoseok said cheerfully, pulling his backpack out in front of him. From out of the largest pocket he pulled a sloppily wrapped, sphere-shaped present of which he looked awfully proud. Yoongi shot him a look, then accepted the gift with a soft spoken word of appreciation.
He peeled off one layer of wrapping paper. Too slowly, it seemed, because Hoseok started to whine for him to hurry up. So Yoongi sighed and peeled off the rest to reveal what was inside.
"It's a lamp," his friend blurted before he could take a good look at it. Yoongi glanced at him and cracked a smile.
"Looks just like the moon."
"It is! Well, a lamp made to look like the moon. Here, it came with a little stand, too. I wrapped that separately, though."
"That's really thoughtful of you, Hoseok, I-"
"What did Gukkie get you? Is my gift better??"
The blond cracked a smile, tempted to shake his head in disappointment but he didn't. "He got me a new pair of boots 'cus mine were worn out. Oh, and a gift card for online food delivery. Second one was unexpected, but I'm not complaining."
"Mm. So basically what you're saying is that my gift is better."
"No, I'm saying I like them equally."
"That's no fair! Why can't I be the favorite for a change??"
"Because you're loud."
"Gukkie's loud!!"
"And?"
"And??"
Hoseok's built up exasperation with the matter dissipated in a moment's time, as it appeared something of greater importance came to his attention. He made a strange, excitable noise and slapped Yoongi lightly on the shoulder.
"Yoongi, it's New Year's Eve!" He exclaimed.
"Correct," Yoongi replied, scanning his friend's expression apprehensively.
"New Year's Eve!"
"You mentioned."
"We gotta party!"
An involuntary look of disgust. "We don't," Yoongi argued. "You're free to do what you want, though, don't let me stop you."
"But Yoongi, I wanted to go to a bar with you this year..."
"Well, I don't wanna drink."
"How 'bout we crash someone's party, then? Huh? Sound fun??"
It doesn't. "Why do your plans always have to be so...so..."
"Fun??"
"Not the first word that came to mind..."
Again, the redhead whined in disappointment, but this time in a much more intense and obnoxious manner that Yoongi couldn't resist rolling his eyes at.
"Yoongi, you always say no." Hoseok's bottom lip stuck out. "It's just one day. Don't you wanna go out for a change and do something stupid for the holidays?"
"I can do stupid things without leaving my apartment, thank you very much-"
"Yoongiiii..."
It wasn't just disappointment anymore. Hoseok actually appeared heartbroken by his friend's disapproval, as if he had been harboring excitement and irrational, high expectations, only to have them brought down to ground level so shamelessly. Well, truthfully it wasn't shameful. Yoongi always felt a little bad turning down Hoseok's invitations, and with each one denied, the guilt only accumulated.
"I promise I won't bother you again for a long time," the redhead insisted. His puppy-dog eyes, though not quite as powerful as Jeongguk's, were still effective. "Please, Yoongi? We don't have to go to a bar or anything, we can just go to Seokjin's, he throws a party every New Year's and I'm always invited. He wouldn't mind if I brought a friend. It's just one night, Yoongi, please?"
He had a point, Yoongi thought regrettably. It was just one night. One night the male would otherwise be spending cooped up in his apartment, enjoying a cup of coffee in solitude, as this year Jeongguk couldn't take off and had to work the evening - even if he had off, the younger typically leaned more towards Hoseok's adventurous tendencies and found something more exciting to do than stay home.
Yoongi wouldn't really be making a huge sacrifice if he chose to accept Hoseok's request this one time. His couch would still be here, and so would his coffee pot.
"Just this once."
"For real?!"
Almost no hesitation was made on Hoseok's part. With one dramatic, sweeping motion, he captured Yoongi in yet another embrace and spun him in circles enough to make the blond dizzy.
"I knew you'd come around, Snuggles!!" He giggled with sheer joy. "It's gonna be so much fun! Jin throws the best parties!"
"Mhm." Yoongi squeezed his eyes shut, groaning internally as his head spun. "I'm sure he does. Can't wait."
"Most people usually start showing up at around eight. Be ready by then, 'cus I'm gonna be picking you up and taking us there, 'k, Yoongi?"
"Yup. Like I said, can't wait..."
