Chapter Twenty-One: Party & Battle Planning
My Grams insisted on taking countless photos of Bella and me in our caps and gowns. She was so enthusiastic, and I couldn't say no to her infectious excitement. We started with some formal shots, but it wasn't long before Bella and I were making goofy faces and striking silly poses, our laughter filling the air. Then we posed for a few with our other friends.
After a while, Grams turned her attention to Edward asking him to join in and take a few photos with us. Edward hesitated for a moment, but with a soft smile from Bella, he reluctantly joined us. We posed together, and I could see that despite his initial reluctance, Edward's fondness for Bella shone through in every shot.
Grams wasn't done yet. She then invited Alice and Jasper to join us for more photos. We took several group shots, capturing the happy moment together. After that, Grams asked for a few pictures of just Alice and Jasper. They posed with genuine smiles, clearly enjoying the occasion. By the end, we had taken a lot of photos, each one a cherished memory of this special day. Once we finished taking photos, I said my goodbyes to everyone, promising to see them later at Alice's party.
My Grams then took me shopping for the day. I got a new dress for the party. It was a girls' day out, and I loved every moment. I had my nails done --- just a pale pink in a stiletto shape, not too long. I also got my hair cut. The outing took almost the entire day, and we returned home just before sunset.
I headed straight to my room with the bags of clothes we had bought and dropped them on my bed before making my way to the bathroom. I peeled off my clothes and stepped into the shower, letting the warm water wash away the day's grime. I lathered shampoo into my hair, then soap over my body, feeling refreshed as the suds rinsed away. When I was done, I wrapped a towel around myself and moved to the sink. The steam from the shower had fogged up the mirror, so I wiped it clean to reveal my reflection. My hair was wet and clinging to my back. I grabbed my toothbrush and began brushing my teeth, enjoying the simple, calming routine.
Once I finished, I stepped out of the bathroom and returned to my bedroom. I dried myself off and began changing into my party dress. I pulled it free from the confines of its bag, it was nothing too fancy, just a nice navy-blue material that felt comfortable and looked elegant. I laid the dress out on the bed, admiring its elegance. The dress itself was knee-length with a fitted bodice, and a full, flared skirt. With thin, straps that hang on the shoulder, and a high neckline. I smiled, imagining how refined I would look once I put it on.
I started on my makeup, opting for subtle, nude tones. After applying a soft eyeshadow, I finished with a pink nude lipstick, enhancing my full lips. Next, I styled my hair, creating soft waves that fell elegantly just above my breasts. After donning a plain black bra and panties, I slipped into the dress, feeling its snug fit accentuate my figure perfectly.
I gazed at my reflection in the floor-length mirror, admiring the beauty that stared back at me. A smile naturally graced my lips as I took in the sight. The final touch was to put on my heels. I walked back over to the bed, spotting the shoebox amidst the other bags. Opening the box, I carefully unwrapped each shoe, savouring the moment. They were the perfect fit, a pair of black high-heeled sandals with ankle straps. I sat on the edge of my bed and carefully slid my feet into each shoe, wrapping the straps around my ankles. With the final pull of the strap and buckling it into the selected hole, I stood up, feeling a few inches taller. I strode across my room to the door and opened it before exiting. I called out to my Grams that I was ready, knowing she'd probably have her camera poised to take some pictures.
I began to descend the staircase, my Grams waiting at the bottom. Her eyes met mine before they wandered over my dress. "You look beautiful, honey!" she exclaimed, snapping a few shots with her camera. I couldn't help but smile, as I continued to descend until I was at the last step, and stepped off with grace.
I was about to speak when a hard knock at the door rang out, alerting us to someone on the other side. Smiling at my Grams, I headed to the front door, grabbing the knob and twisting it open. I expected to see Bella, as we were going to the same party. However, as the door swung open, it was Emmett standing on the threshold. His eyes immediately took in my outfit, widening in surprise as they travelled from my heels to my dress.
He let out a low whistle as his eyes finally met mine, making me blush under his intense gaze. "You clean up nice," he remarked, a boyish grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Bella asked me to take you to the party," Emmett announced. I bit my inner cheek, realizing she was probably trying to get us some alone time.
"Of course she did," I remarked playfully, letting a soft chuckle escape my lips. "I'm ready, so—"
"Hold on," my Grams' voice echoed from behind as she approached the door. "I want a photo of the two of you," she insisted, determined to capture the moment.
"Grams," I shot a glance over my shoulder, giving her a look that said 'really?', as if she was attempting the same matchmaking tactics as Bella.
"Indulge an old woman," she teased, knowing full well I couldn't refuse her. With a playful eye roll, I nodded in agreement. Stepping out the front door, I let out a soft sigh, my Grams trailing closely behind.
Emmett graciously stepped back, creating ample space for our impromptu photoshoot. I manoeuvred myself to his left, slipping my arm behind his back, and feeling the cold of his side against mine. His left hand found its place on my shoulder, drawing me in closer as he pulled me into a gentle embrace.
"Say cheese!" my Grams called out cheerfully, peering through the camera lens. With a shared glance, Emmett and I flashed our brightest smiles, eager to capture the moment. After a few clicks, my Grams lowered the camera, signalling the end of the impromptu photoshoot. Emmett and I released each other from our embrace, and I took a step forward.
"I'll see you later," I said to my Grams, reaching out to hug her tightly. "Love you," I whispered, feeling her soft kiss on my cheek as she murmured the same in return. As we parted ways, Emmett took the lead, descending the porch steps first. However, he paused at the bottom and extended his hand toward me. I accepted his large hand, as he gently guided me down the remaining steps.
As my heels clicked against the pavement, I approached the familiar car. Emmett was already holding the door open for me, his smile greeting me warmly. With a smile in return, I slid into the seat carefully, feeling the comfort of the leather beneath me. The door slammed shut, its echo fading as I turned to my left. Emmett was already settled in the driver's seat, starting up the car smoothly.
"I have something for you," Emmett said suddenly, breaking the silence that had settled between us. I raised my eyebrows in surprise, curiosity sparking in my eyes. "A graduation present," he continued, reaching into his jeans pocket and producing a small box. It wasn't extravagant, but the gesture was enough to leave me speechless. He extended his hand towards me, offering the box, and I hesitated for a moment before reaching out to accept it.
Clutching the box in my hand, I observed its small size, noting that it resembled a ring box. However, I didn't expect to find a ring or earrings inside. Still reeling from the surprise, I carefully lifted the lid, revealing a bracelet nestled inside. As I examined it, I immediately recognized the symbol attached to the black string --- it was a witch's knot. Its intertwining loops, undeniable as it had no beginning or end.
"Emmett," I whispered his name, lifting my eyes from the bracelet to meet his gaze.
"It's a symbol of protection," Emmett explained. "I did some reading," he admitted sheepishly, reaching up to scratch the back of his neck nervously.
"It's perfect," I replied sincerely, eagerly taking it out of the box. After placing the box down, I slid the bracelet onto my left wrist and extended it towards him for him to fasten it for me. He readily accepted, adjusting the strings at opposite ends to secure it around my wrist. As his hand fell away, I cast a glance at the bracelet, noticing how snugly the witch's knot rested against my skin.
"Thank you," I started, lifting my gaze to meet his. "It's truly perfect," I couldn't contain the wide smile that spread across my face, my happiness evident in my expression. My heart fluttered with gratitude for the thoughtful present and his gesture.
As the car started and jolted forward, we sped off down the road, heading towards his house for the party. Despite the movement, my smile never faded as I gazed out of the window, anticipation bubbling within me.
..................................
The house buzzed with vibrant energy, filled with everyone who had graduated. With each click of my heels against the steps of the staircase, I felt a surge of confidence. My dress hugged my body perfectly, a testament to how much I had grown over the past few months. Bella had been instrumental in boosting my confidence, and I was grateful for her friendship. As I reached the first floor, I observed people connecting and enjoying themselves. Searching for Bella, I navigated through the crowd, hoping to find her already there. Returning to the stair-landing, I spotted Bella turning around, her expression shifting from anticipation to surprise as her eyes roamed over my outfit. She walked toward me; her curiosity evident in her gaze.
"Charlotte," she started, her voice filled with admiration. "You look stunning!" Bella exclaimed, clearly impressed by my attire. I chuckled at her enthusiasm and decided to play along, giving her a twirl before coming back around, a smile dancing on my lips.
"Thanks," I responded, taking note of her more casual attire. Bella wasn't one for fancy dresses, but what she wore wasn't too shabby, just a bit different for the occasion. "Not bad for a witch, right?" I joked, earning a chuckle from her in response.
Suddenly, three boys ascended the stairs, scanning the room as they reached the top. Jacob, Embry, and Quil's eyes locked onto me, their gazes lingering on my attire. Jacob stepped forward, positioning himself in front of Bella and me, with Embry and Quil close behind. After a swift glance in my direction, Jacob shifted his focus to Bella.
"What are you doing here?" Bella asked, her tone soft, but there was their recent altercation still fresh in everyone's mind.
"You invited me, remember?" Jacob replied, his expression blank as he recalled the invitation.
"Was my right hook too subtle for you?" Bella questioned; her tone edged with sarcasm. "That was me uninviting you," she added, shooting a quick glance at me before returning her gaze to him.
"Look, Bella, I'm sorry," Jacob began, his voice tinged with remorse. "About, you know," he trailed off, shaking his head, a sigh escaping his lips. "The kiss and your hand," he admitted, unable to maintain eye contact with her. "I'd blame it on the whole inner animal thing, but it was really just me being an ass... I'm really sorry." It wasn't the most eloquent apology, but it seemed sincere. "I brought you something," Jacob announced, delving into his jean pocket. With a flourish, he produced a bracelet. "A graduation present. I made it myself." As he unveiled the bracelet, the carving of a wolf hanging from the silver metal chain caught the light, gleaming softly.
Bella delicately slid her hand under the wolf carving, admiring Jake's handiwork. "Wow. You made this?" she exclaimed, utterly amazed by Jake's craftsmanship. Her gaze met his as she expressed her gratitude. "It's really pretty. Thanks."
In the midst of the music-filled atmosphere, Alice descended the staircase from the second floor, pausing midway and gripping the banister. Her gaze seemed distant, lost in her own thoughts. A frown creased my forehead, my brows furrowing together in concern. That familiar expression on Alice's face hinted that she had glimpsed something significant.
"I'll be right back," Bella said before heading over to Alice to check on her.
Jacob then complimented me, saying, "You look beautiful, Charlotte," before he walked over to Bella. His unexpected words surprised me, but I appreciated the gesture. I snapped out of my thoughts, and joined Bella and Jake, catching the end of their conversation.
"No. They're coming here," Alice's voice trembled as she delivered the unsettling news. An air of concern settled over us, evident in the shared glances exchanged between the group. With a sense of urgency, we made our way outside, seeking refuge from the gathering inside. As we emerged into the cool night air, Carlisle, Edward, and Jasper joined us, their presence bringing a semblance of reassurance. I found a spot beside Bella, her familiar presence offering some comfort amidst the tension. Edward positioned himself on her other side. Across from us, the trio of Jacob, Embry, and Quil stood, their expressions mirroring our own apprehension. Carlisle stationed himself to my left, while Alice and Jasper hovered nearby, their proximity to the table.
"They'll be here in four days," Alice announced, her voice tinged with concern as she clung tightly to Jasper's side for support.
"This could turn into a bloodbath," Carlisle remarked gravely, settling himself on the edge of the table with a heavy sigh.
"Who's behind it?" Edward directed his question to Alice, whose expression betrayed a hint of worry.
"I didn't see anyone I recognized," Alice spoke, her eyes drifting away, recalling the vision she had. "Maybe one," she replied, her tone tense as we all turned to her with concern.
"I know his face. He's local, Riley Biers. But he didn't start this," Edward interjected from beside Bella. The name sounded oddly familiar; I recalled hearing it in connection with Bella's dad, who had been searching for a missing kid about a year ago.
"Whoever did this is staying out of the action," Alice observed, her gaze shifting between all of us. My mind raced, trying to decipher who could be behind it all.
"They must be exploiting the blind spots in your vision," Carlisle remarked, indicating that whoever it was understood the limitations of the Cullens' gifts.
"Either way, the army is coming and we don't have enough of us to protect the town," Jasper voiced, his Texan accent evident as he spoke.
"Hold up," Jacob states, bringing his gaze over from Jasper back to Carlisle. "What damn army?" Jake inquired, clearly unaware of the situation at hand.
"Newborns. Our kind," Carlisle clarified, his arms folded firmly over his chest.
"What are they after?" Embry asked in a hushed tone. Alice remained silent for a moment before glancing towards Bella and me.
"They were passing around Bella's and Charlotte's scents. A red blouse and a black tank-top," Alice revealed, her eyes meeting Bella's with a grave expression. Bella's face remained stoic, but I sensed the gravity of the situation sinking in. Deep down, I knew trouble loomed on the horizon.
"They're after Bella and Charlotte? What the hell does this mean?" Jake's concern was palpable, his voice edged with worry. Little did he know, I was prepared to defend both Bella and myself if it came to that.
"It means an ugly fight. With lives lost." Carlisle stated solemnly, meeting Jacob's gaze squarely. Jacob slowly turned his head to his fellow pack members, who nodded in understanding.
"All right. We're in." Jacob replied bravely. The determination in his voice was evident, but I couldn't shake the feeling of dread. I knew neither Bella nor I wanted anyone to sacrifice themselves for us.
"No," Bella stated firmly, shaking her head. "You'd get yourselves killed. No way." Her tone was resolute, reflecting her adamant stance against putting their lives at risk for hers.
"I wasn't asking for permission," Jake replied, his deep brown eyes fixed on Bella with a determined gaze, his expression unwavering.
"Edward?" Bella inquired, her hope tethered to the prospect of his words altering Jacob's resolve. After a brief pause of scrutinising Jacob, Edward shifted his gaze to Bella.
"It means more protection for you and Charlotte," Edward stated, his gaze alternating between Bella and me.
"Jacob, do you believe Sam would agree to an--" Carlisle paused briefly, his gaze searching for the right words. "Understanding?" He asked, getting the right word out.
"As long as we get to kill some vampires," Jake replied in a cold, determined tone, his desire to fight evident in his words.
"Jasper?" Carlisle inquired, seeking his insight due to his experience with dealing with newborns.
"They'll give us the numbers," Jasper responded, his gaze briefly meeting Jacob's. "Newborns won't know they even exist. That'll give us an edge," he explained, drawing from his knowledge of newborn behaviour before turning his gaze to Carlisle.
"We'll need to coordinate," Carlisle mentioned as he rose from the table.
"Carlisle, they're going to get hurt," Bella interjected, abruptly standing. Carlisle turned his attention to Bella, acknowledging her concern.
"We'll all need some training," he replied to her. "Fighting newborns requires knowledge that Jasper has," Carlisle briefly nodded in Jasper's direction before returning his gaze to Jacob. "You're welcome to join us," he added, extending the invitation. Having the wolves on our side will provide a significant advantage, just as Jasper mentioned. I can't bear the thought of losing any of these people; they're like my second family.
"Alright. Name the time and place," Jake stated, stepping forward slightly to stand in front of Carlisle.
"Jake," Bella began, her voice soft as she stared at Jacob. "You don't know what you're getting yourself into," she expressed, concerned about his safety.
"Bella, this is what we do," Jacob explained. "You should be happy... look at us, working together," his tone carried a hint of mockery that I couldn't ignore. "You're the one who wanted us to get along. Remember?" Her words seemed to come back to haunt her.
Having them join us would be beneficial for everyone. It would increase our numbers and give us an advantage. We just had to hold onto faith that we could win this battle. Perhaps a bit of magic could be just what we need to tip the scales in our favour.
