Unlikely - George x reader

---

George and I weren't always friends. We hated each other for two months. We would constantly fight and yell at each other. It even affected how we performed during a job. We hated each other until Lockwood nearly got killed.

After that, Lockwood and Lucy gave George and I an intervention. We needed to get along or both of us would be fired.

I agreed because there was really nowhere else for me to go.

George and I were instructed by Lockwood to make a meal for all of us three times a week together.

The first week was a nightmare. George yelled at me for burning pasta on the first night. How do you even burn pasta if it's boiling? The second night, George dropped the container holding eggs and we had to go out to the stores early in the morning to get new ones. The third night, George and I couldn't decide on what to make so we got takeout and pretended we made it.

The second week was easier, we made decisions together. By the third week, we were dancing along to music and cooking together.

After a month and a half of this, we got a major case from a private company. We were asked to remove bones of witchcraft trial victims on land to be developed. It seemed simple enough but we had to sign fifty waivers each and if we lived we were getting a million in payment.

We got to the barren land before nightfall and made a plan. It was only one set of human remains, how hard could a single vengeful spirit be?

George and I were in charge of throwing the iron net and Lucy and Lockwood were in charge of cleanup.

However it went terribly wrong the second the sun set behind the trees.

Who would have thought the land was actually a mass grave?

I fell trying to get under a ghost lamp and George was throwing salt bombs.

I heard a snap and my leg fell out from underneath me.

I had tripped on a log and was now laying on the ground, unable to feel below my knee.

George was trying to drag me to the lamp and I think I blacked out from the pain.

The last thing I remember telling George was, "Leave me please. Save yourself. I love you."

I woke up in a DEPRAC hospital a few days later. My leg was in a full length cast and my wrist was wrapped in bandages.

I tried to move but I still couldn't really feel my legs.

A nurse came in a few minutes later, and she explained to me that they were medically numbed to try and heal the bones faster. The less I moved the better.

I fell asleep and was woken up by the nurse talking to someone outside my hospital room.

George came in a few minutes later with a bag full of stuff.

He shuffled in quietly but when he saw I was awake he froze for a second, then sat down next to me.

"Good morning," I greeted.

"Hey. Didn't think you'd be awake," George said awkwardly.

"I woke up a bit ago," I replied. "Nurses said they'd be weaning me off of medication and I could leave in a week or so."

"That's good."

"How did the case go?"

"It went well. Lucy got the bones and salted over the area. We did get paid though."

"That's good."

We both were quiet and then George spoke up.

"Did you mean it?" He asked.

"Mean what?"

"What you said when I was carrying you?"

My mind blanked for a moment. I couldn't remember much from that night no matter how hard I tried.

Then it hit me.

"You mean when I said I loved you?"

George's eyes widened a bit and he turned away.

Yeah," He said in a quiet voice.

I didn't know how to respond.

Did I mean it? I don't know.

I mean, sure, I felt it. I'd always seen George as attractive even before we became friends.

So I decided to get some confidence, suck out my dread, and go for it.

"I meant every single word I said," I met George's eyes. "I'd choose your safety over mine if it meant giving my life up."

George just stared at me before his lips rose to a smile.

"You're always dramatic,  you know," George chuckled.

I was confused.

"I love you too y/n. I have since the day we met on Lockwoods door step," George spoke with a shaky voice. "But the one thing I'll never do is leave you alone, leave you to die. These past few weeks have made me realize that you're the reason I keep going, despite how irritable you can be at times."

I was still in quite some shock, whether that be from the medication or from George himself.

"So this whole time you hated me, you actually loved me? George Karim you are absolutely unbelievable. I think I like you a whole lot more now," I smiled at him.

George only smiled at me. Then he picked up the bag he placed on the ground earlier.

"I got you some stuff," he adjusted his glasses. "Cookies, a book, an extra blanket. You always complain how cold your hands get. And I also snuck in some tea from the tea shop down the street."

George pulled two to-go cups of warm tea from the bag, surprising me since I thought the would be spilled everywhere.

"You're the best George. Thank you." I leaned up a bit and pecked him on the cheek.

"Anything for you y/n."

He was unlike anyone I'd ever met, and I was happy that he was here with me.

the end.

(Sorry for not posting this one. It was in my drafts for a few months and I just noticed it 🤭)
