Final Chapter- A Goodbye
Jenny's funeral was sad, as all funerals usually are. I didn't know Jenny well, but Peter did. He wouldn't stop crying.
After the funeral, my main focus was choosing a side. Good or bad? I had all this time to think about it, but I never used it. The fact that I have to choose now is only just hitting me. Good or bad?
I would be labeled a better person on the good side, but all my friends are on the bad side. Who do I choose, myself or my friends?
What would my parents want?
My parents. I feel hollow inside at the thought of them. They are gone.
I think back to the dream I had. My dad turned into a bad spirit. I try to picture him in my head. It's coming back to me...
Draco! My dad turned onto Draco!
I know now. I have to find Draco. I run around asking if anyone's seen him, but no one has. I would've given up hope if Luke would not have walked up to me. He stood next to me, clearly unfazed by Jenny's death. He whistled nervously until he looked at me. "Julia, I need to talk to you." he said rather seriously. I nodded and he grabbed my hand and pulled me over to a tree in the graveyard. His hand is sweaty.
Luke turns to me. "Julia. I know this isn't the right time and place, but Zugzwang isn't safe anymore. If you get killed, I- I don't know what I'd do. Julia, you are beautiful in so many ways. I know you're younger than me, but..." Luke hesitates, and I see what he's trying to say. "Don't worry, I get it." I tell him reassuringly. Then it clicks.
"Luke! Have you seen Draco?" I ask him suddenly. He looks confused at the change of subject. "Y- yeah. He's up the hill." Luke gestures to a hill. I smile at him. "Luke, we can continue this conversation later. This is important." I run up the hill.
There is Draco, on top of the hill, looking down at a grave. As I move closer, I catch a glimpse of what it says:
R.I.P Evert D. Zugzwang. Loving father of Damian, Dory, and Draco.
"Draco?" I break the silence. He jumps and turns around. I can see he's been crying.
"You caught me off guard." His voice is trembling. I walk closer and he reaches a hand down to touch my shoulder. "Draco, I've made my decision." I tell him confidently. "I want to join the bad side."
He looks at me lovingly. "I knew you would. You're like a daughter to me. What makes you choose this side?"
"My friends." I say. He looks back at te gravestone. "Mostly Luke though, if I'm not mistaken." He chuckles. I stare at him, amazed. "H-how did you know?" I ask wearily.
"I can enter minds Julia. That was me in the dream about your parents. I entered your dream, intending to warn you of the orphanage, but your mind had other plans. Somehow, your conscience forced me to push your mother into the fire. I had no intention of doing it. I feared you would recognize me, and you would fear me. That's why I was so grumpy around you. I didn't act like myself, because I didn't want you to fear me." He concluded.
I still had other questions. "What did you want to warn me about?" Draco looked at me, then a voice in my head old me the answer.
Julia, this is Draco. I can not tell you this, for Dove has put a curse on me. So, I will tell you through your mind. Dove isn't what she seems. She may be the goddess of all good, but she has other intentions. She killed Jenny. She is trying to take over the orphanage. I know this because she tried to persuade me to join her, but I refused. She then put a curse on me so I can't say anything. She killed Jenny because she found out that she was brainwashing all the good kids. She couldn't let Jenny tell anyone, so she killed her. She killed an innocent kid!
Draco starts crying. He collapses into a sobbing ball on the ground. I felt incompetent, all I could do was kneel down next to him and pat his back.
After he finished his small tantrum, he looked up at me. "Julia, I started the Zugzwang orphanage. Dove didn't. I have to tell you this. I'm trusting you to take care of the Orphanage. Dove is going down with me." He says between sobs. I'm still confused, so I ask, "W-what do you mean?"
Draco smiles sadly. "I'm going to see my father." He jesters at the gravestone, and o realize what he's saying. "NO! Draco, please don't go!" I quickly start to cry. He reaches a hand up and touches my cheek. "Julia... I am leaving you... in charge... of... Zugzwang..." he tells me weakly. "No, please, don't leave me Draco..." I plead.
Down the hill, I hear a scream. It sounds like Dove. "NO! DRACO, HOW COULD YOU? I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOOD! NOW YOU'RE GOING TO KILL ME!" I look down alarmingly at Draco. "What is happening?" I ask.
He chuckles. "People aren't always bad at heart, Julia." And with that, he lays down and closes his eyes. He smiles, and then he is still.
"Draco?" He's probably just resting. I poke his shoulder. "Draco, wake up. This isn't funny." Eventually, I am shaking him uncontrollably. "DRACO! PLEASE, WAKE UP!" I hear footsteps behind me, then a gasp. I feel arms squeeze me and I realize the person hugging me is Luke. He releases me and I turn around. Behind Luke is Jordan, who has his hands over his mouth, and his eyes are wide.
Luke looks at me. "Julia, I love you."
I look back at Luke.
"I love you too."
