Chapter 7
Luke opens the huge doors to the cafeteria, and I am greeted by a roar of talking, laughing, and screaming. I immediately cover my ears. It's instinctive. I look at Luke and say as loud as I can, "Is it always this loud?"
"Well, yeah. The good side and the evil side always argue over who is better. Especially when there's a new kid." He nudges me. Jordan runs through the doorway. "Come on! I'm hungry!" He shouts over his shoulder. I walk with Luke over to the line of kids waiting to get food. As we walk, I can't help but notice that our walking is in sync. We are like a two-man marching band. I smile. It feels good to have a friend.
When it's our turn to get food, Luke orders a slice of pizza. I order spaghetti, my favorite food. My mom made the best spaghetti. I frown. I still can't believe she is dead. We find a seat at a table with two other people. One of them is a short girl with braided blonde hair that has dark blue ends. She has a band-aid sticking to her cheek. The other kid is a younger version of the blonde haired girl. She has the same pale yellow hair pulled into a braid, except she doesn't have a band-aid placed on her cheek. The older girl gives me a nasty glare, but the younger girl smiles. Her lime green eyes glimmer. "Hi! I'm Madison! I feel so honored to be sitting with another girl just like us!" She exclaims. I look at Luke, confused. He smiles. "Madison and her older sister, Payton, also lost their parents in a fire."
I look at the older girl, who must be Payton, and I smile sympathetically. She makes eye contact with me. She grunts and frowns, but I can see a sad look in her eyes. I pick up my fork and scoop up some spaghetti. I plop it into my mouth and savor the Italian deliciousness. I feel happy once more.

I wake to the sound of knocking on my door. I open my eyes. It takes me a minute for my eyes to adjust to the darkness, but once they do, I look at my clock. It's 2:45. The knocking continues. "Julia! Open up!" I drowsily get out of bed and I stumble over to the door. I open it, and there stands Luke. He smiles at me. "Can I come in?"
I point at the clock. "It's 2 in the morning." He sighs, but walks in anyway. "Look, I know I'm not supposed to be here, but it's a full moon tonight, and I really want you to see it." He explains. I roll my eyes. "Fine." I answer. I follow him up two levels of stairs. He leads me down a hallway on the top floor with a door at the end of it. He opens it and we enter a room with a bunch of machines. They buzz and burble. He leads me between all of them until we came to a ladder. We climbed it until we reach a big, open space. I look around and see the city around me. The lights from the buildings are like fireflies. The stars shine brightly in the sky. I look around and I see the moon. Luke wasn't wrong. It is full. Luke looks at me and smiles. "Isn't it beautiful."
"Yeah."
