Chapter 6
I sit on my bed, waiting. They gave me no schedule or anything. I just have to wait and wait until I know what to do. I think they have dinner or something? I hear a knock at the door. "Come in!" I say. Draco walks in, carrying a sheet of paper. He is back to normal, he is now longer in his god form. He hands me the sheet of paper. "This is your schedule." He says. I look down at it. It looks a little like this:
Breakfast-9:00-10:00
Tour- 10:30- 12:30
Lunch- 1:00- 1:30
Meet up- 2:00- 4:00
Free time -4:00- 5:00
Dinner - 5:00- 6:00
All in bed by 8:00
I look up at Draco gratefully. I thank him and he leaves. I look at the time. It's 4:40. I have twenty minutes until dinner. I change into a nice white t-shirt and some dark black jeans. I look in the mirror. If the dark side kids wear black, and the good side kids wear white, I should wear both. Right?
I pull my hair up into a bun and tie it with a hair binder and some pins. I sit on my bed and look at the time again. 4:45. It's only been five minutes. I have no idea what I could do to cure my boredom. Did I bring some books? I check my suitcase and remember that all my belongings were burned to ashes. I heave a sigh and go back to sitting on the bed. I have 15 minutes, maybe I could build a fort? I stand up and take all the pillows and blankets off my bed. I drape the blanket on the dresser and bed to make a roof. Then I put pillows around the edges for walls. I put a few pillows inside. Eventually I have a whole fortress made of fluffy pillows and silky blankets. I look at the time once more. 4:55. I start out the door when I realize I don't know where the dining room is. I walk down the hallway into the lobby. No one is at the front desk. Maybe if I walk upstairs I could find someone.
I trudge up the regal staircase and up to the next floor. I look around. No one is in the main area. I go down the left hallway because I went down the right hallway this morning. Already, I see graffiti along the walls, telling me I'm on the bad side. I keep walking. Many doors line the walls, some are open, revealing dingy rooms. A foul stench comes from inside the rooms. I plug my nose. If I choose the bad side, I'll have to live with this.
I hear two voices. It sounds like two boys. "My watch is right! It's 4:00! We still have an hour!" The voice is a young boy. "No, the clock is right! It's 5:00! We need to get to dinner!" This time the voice sounded oddly familiar. I walk down the hallway until I come across an open door, leading to a room with two boys. One is small with curly brown hair. The other one, wait, it's the guy that blurted during my Ranking! The two boys are bickering and shouting. I lightly knock on the wide open door. They keep fighting. I knock harder. They stop and look at me, confused. They must be brothers, because they look almost exactly the same. I smile. "Um, hi. I'm Julia-"
"Yeah, we know. You're the new kid." The younger boy interrupts. I scrunch up my eyebrows. How rude! I'm about to scold him when I realize he's on the bad side. It's natural for him to insult others. I smile once more. "Well, since you already know who I am, I won't have to introduce myself." I clear my throat. "I overheard your... conversation... and I happen to be heading to dinner as well. And, I would like state that, it is 5:00. I checked my clock which is on time. Dove fixed it a few hours ago." I nod. "I would also like to ask, do you know where the cafeteria is?" I cross my arms, trying to be casual. The older boy starts talking. "Yes, we do know where the cafeteria is. In fact, you can follow us to it." The little boy roles his eyes. I smile brightly. "Thank you."
As the boys walk down the hallway, I follow close behind. They whisper to each other, but not loud enough for me to hear them. I speed up until I'm walking side by side with them. "So, what are your names?" I ask. Once again, they look confused. I bet no one has ever asked them that because they are on the bad side. But surely they have friends? The older boy answers. "I'm Luke, and this is my brother, Jordan." Jordan sticks out his tongue at me. I playfully punch his shoulder. He rubs it and laughs. I look at Luke. "So, when did you guys arrive here?" I ask. Luke shrugs. "Honestly, I don't remember. It was eight years ago. I was three, and Jordan was one. We lost our parents in a bombing." He explains. I pat his back. "I'm so sorry." He cringes at the sudden contact. I jerk my hand away. He blushes. "Well, how'd you lose your parents?" He asks. I frown. "I lost them in a fire. They sacrificed themselves to save me." I remember my dream after I drank the pink stuff. They didn't sacrifice themselves. My father pushed my mother into the flames. She was killed, but a voice deep down inside me told me that it was just a dream. I didn't really happen.
Luke interrupts my thoughts. "Here we are!" He exclaims. "The Zugzwang Cafeteria!" I look up at the humongous entrance in front of me. I stare at it until my eyes hurt. The entrance is a gold door frame, about eight feet tall. The frame is covered in gold sculptures of angel and demons. "You can sit with us, if you want." Luke offers. I smile at him gratefully. "That would be wonderful, thank you."
