Chapter 5
I stare in awe at Dove and Draco. They float in the air. Draco has dark clouds coming off him in waves. He is completely black, except for his bright red eyes. He is still wearing his robe and huge headdress. Dove is more pale than ever. She has white clouds surrounding her. She is still wearing the long white dress and crown. Her hair is white and much longer. It is flowing around her like a veil. They both look down at me in unison. "Julia. We are Dove and Draco, guardians of good and evil." Dove explains. "You have been chosen to come to Zugzwang and learn how to be a representative of your Ranking."
I stare at them. That must be what that blonde haired kid meant by Ranking. Draco begins, "Both sides will give you examples of the benefits on each side." He jesters to the side wearing black and red. "That is my side." The left side cheers. Dove smiles and nods to the right side. "And that is my side." The right side bows their heads in unison. A few kids give me dirty looks, including the boy I saw in the hallway. Dove begins again. "We will go first." Then she pushes a button that makes the ground shake again. I grab onto Draco's podium. I close my eyes. When I open them there's more cheering. I turn around, and there's a huge screen. The decals around it show an angel and a devil flying over the world. It is the color gold. The screen pops on, showing pictures of battles. They flash on the screen, barely giving me any time to really look at them. Dove clears her throat. "For centuries, good and evil have quarreled over land and leadership. We have fought battles and battle over stupid things such as winning over a grocery store or bikes." she tells the crowd. "In the year 1900, we finally came together and joined forces, creating the Zugzwang Orphanage. Knowing that no normal kid would be able to keep our secret, we took in young orphans and had them choose, good," she gestures to the kids on the right. "or evil." She gestures to the kids on the left.
Draco starts to speak. "Julia Siver, you have lost your parents in a terrible fire, you have been in the hospital for five months, we decided to take you here. But, according to tradition, you must choose a side. Depending on what you choose you will be treated a certain way." He steps of his podium, but I shouldn't say step. Levitate sounds better. He floats over to me and stops a foot away. He looks down at me with his beady eyes. "You must choose. If you choose my side, the evil side, you will be able to cause all the trouble you want. No rules! No punishments! Always fun!" he tells me. One kid stands up in the crowd. He is wearing a dark red shirt and black jeans. He has long brown hair tied into a ponytail. He looks to be thirteen years old. "It's AWESOME!" he shouts. Draco glares at him, and the boy almost immediately plops back into the seat, a look of embarrassment on his face. Dove starts talking in her gentle voice. "If you join the good side, you learn to be proper and nice. Everything is clean and kept together." She smiles proudly.
I feel a feeling bubbling up inside me. It's a mix of excitement and nervousness. I think, Wow! This is amazing! I can't wait for all these great opportunities, but, do I have to choose right now? When will I choose?
Luckily, Draco answers my question. "You will have approximately five weeks to choose your side. Until then, you will be neutral."
I smile widely. I am so grateful to have a wonderful new home.
