Chapter Four: "The Apocalypse Begins?"

Previously, Nick and Judy arrive at BunnyBurrows in search of a mammal heading there. While Jack arrives at BunyBurrows himself. After finding out that a corpse followed him, Jack walks up to the nearest house, only to encounter Nick and Judy themselves, where Judy finds out that Jack is the mysterious mammal heading towards BunnyBurrows, only to be asking for help for Savage City. Nick and Judy remember hearing something about Savage City at the ZPD, and let him in to hear what he has to say.

"That. I can answer. I hope you all have time, as this is a long story," I say. Nick sits down on a couch beside Judy, making them seem ready to listen. Wow. What was easy. Now, comes the problem of them believing me. I take a breath ready to explain myself.

"Well?" Judy says, snapping me out of my thoughts. Oh, crap. How long was I thinking to myself? Oh well. I clear my throat quickly. And, this just got awkward.

"Alright. Sorry. I beg you to give me a chance. I'm not crazy, I swear, but Savage City has been overrun," I start. Great. You're going to make yourself sound crazy anyways. Welp. I tried.

"Savage City. Last I heard, it was closed off to the outside. Do you know why that is?" Judy asks. Great. They don't know. Well, no surprise. I didn't believe word of zombies until I saw one myself.

"I said I'm from Savage City, so yes, I'd know why. Now, here's the crazy part. Savage city has been overrun by zombies," I say, hoping to at least get a chance to explain. "Now! Hear me out! Before you think I'm crazy, I've got proof that you should see. Please," I say, beginning to beg. Great. Begging. Judy gives a sigh, before standing up. Wait. Does she actually believe me?

"Carrots! Are you seriously going to believe this guy?" Nick cries. Judy turns to face Nick, clearly upset. Oh boy. I hope I didn't just start something.

"Nick. Do you remember the last time we didn't trust someone in a situation similar to this? We got that poor mammal killed! Let's at least give him a chance," Judy says. Well then. This took a turn I didn't see coming. Let's hope that poor bunny corpse is still where I left it. Just as Judy turns back to me, Nick reaches out and grabs Judy's arm, spinning her to him. I just take a few steps away, just to be safe.

"Judy. What if he hurts you? Huh? Back then, that was a legible case of mammal-hunt! This? Zombies? Clearly something fishy's on the hook," Nick argues. He's got a point. Zombies would seem crazy to anyone who hasn't seen one. But, I've seen my friends and family become those, so. Point made for myself.

"Then you're coming along," Judy says, turning away from Nick. Ouch. Paw down. Nick's face says it alone, there's no fighting this bunny, thankfully. But, I must say, this ain't what I expected outta Hopps. I'm still glad she's at least agreeing to come along. "Show us this, zombie," Judy says. Please be there, please be there. I go to throw my rifle over my shoulder, but something stops it. I turn to see Judy holding it in her paw. "Leave the rifle," She says. I nod, understanding her concern, but I wish I could take it, though. Just to be safe. I walk over to the door, making sure they're following before I continue to lead them through the field towards where I left that bunny.

"Now. If I hit properly, it should still be-" I stop as I approach where I left the corpse. No! It's gone! Oh, this ain't good. "No!" I cry, running up to the spot. Looking down, I see fresh blood.

"I told you, Carrots!" I hear Nick say, before the familiar scent of rotting flesh fills my nose. I don't know whether to say I'm glad that smell is here, or worried.

"What's that smell?" Judy says. I straighten up, darting my eyes around the treescape, which is getting darker, but not too much. I feel my fur standing on end in worry. I've never been near a corpse without my KA-47. It honestly scares me, as I feel so defenseless. It only takes me but a minute to see a silhouette in the woods.

"Judy?" I say, trying to get her attention, not taking my eyes off the figure. I hold an open paw out towards either Nick or Judy, not sure which one. After no response, I turn to see Judy looking in the same direction I was. She sees it. I don't know whether to say good, or bad.

"Sir?" Judy calls out to the corpse, who stops once Judy speaks up. Crap! Not good! Definitely not good! Scrambling, I quickly motion for Judy to be quiet.

"Judy! Don't call out for him! That's not a normal bunny!" I frantically whisper. My plea only causes Judy to look at me odd.

"He looks lost to me. In case you haven't noticed, it's my job to help people, mister. Now please," Judy says, before looking out to the corpse when I do, only to see he's turned around, and walking right towards us! Not good! "Sir? Are you okay?" Judy calls out again. My heart is now racing as a groan is heard from the bunny corpse. Okay, I need to do something. And fast.

"He doesn't look so good, Carrots," Nick says, unease flowing through his voice. Yeah. He's dead, Nick. In my panicked spur, I grab Judy's arm, attempting to pull her away, which she only jerks out of my grasp. Oh, why is convincing authorities of things seeming so difficult?

"What are you doing? That bunny needs help," Judy says. He doesn't need help, Judy. He needs a bullet. Nick walks up, tapping Judy's shoulder. Well, he suddenly looks worried.

"Carrots. Maybe we should head back," Nick says, his voice trembling. Wait. Wasn't Nick the one who thought I was crazy before? Judy turns to Nick like he's the crazy one now.

"Nick? What are you talking about?" Judy asks. A groan, too close for comfort fills our ears, making me jump slightly as I turn, seeing that corpse VERY close to us, the hole I left in his neck visible. Letting out a cry that's so unlike me, I pull my knife from its sheath and throw it at the corpse, who only jerks unfazed as the knife strikes the shoulder.

"Run!" I cry, pushing Nick and Judy as the corpse lets out another groan as he walks into the light, those undead eyes looking us over like a fox would look over its meal. Before I have time to react, Nick's drawn his weapon and fires into its chest. The corpse only flinches, continuing its route towards us as we slowly back up. I can only feel the terror from Nick and Judy as Nick fires another shot at it, striking it in the shoulder. The corpse doesn't fall. One final shot to the head jerks the corpse back and makes it collapse to the ground.

"What was that thing?" Judy says, her voice trembling as well. I look and see Nick and Judy facing me, obviously expecting an answer. I tried to warn you two.

"Don't say I didn't warn you two. Nick, you just killed your first zombie," I say, carefully walking up to the re-dead body, looking it over. I hear Judy silently whispering as they walk up to look at it. Huh. There's my proof. Lying in front of us, staring at the sky with its pale eyes.

"You weren't joking," Nick breathes. Of course I'm not! But what makes me worry again is the fact that they're so close to BunnyBurrows. I pull my knife from the shoulder and wipe it down before sheathing it.

"Wait. You said that Savage City was overrun by these things?" Judy asks, turning towards me. I gulp down a lump in my throat. This, is what I was dreading.

"Yes. I came to ask for help from the ZPD to help my home," I say again. Judy turns to Nick, worry shown clearly through her face.

"Nick. We have to tell Bogo," Judy says. Welp. Looks to me like another argument between the two. Nick scoffs in disbelief. Wait, he's still in disbelief? How hard-headed is this fox?

"Carrots. Do you know how crazy we'll sound? 'Excuse me. Chief Bogo? We're afraid that a zombie apocalypse has started in Savage City.' He'll have us fired, Judy," Nick says. Point for the fox. And, now that he put it that way, I really did sound crazy. But, it's the truth nonetheless. We freeze again as a groan breaks the argument, making my fur stand on end. Immediately, we turn to the bunny that's on the ground, but he hasn't moved. Another groan is heard.

"Sweet cheese and crackers," I gasp, knowing what that groan meant. Another corpse. My eyes instinctively dart around, searching the forest for the corpse, until a pair of pawsteps is heard running towards us. We all turn, only to see the two country bunnies running towards us.

"Judy!" The female bunny calls out, still running up. Are they crazy? Judy looks back and forth between the forest line and those two bunnies. Forest line. Bunnies. Any mammal with a brain would realize Judy seems a little lost. "Judy! Are you alright?" The female asks as she catches up to us.

"Mom. It's not safe to be here. Get back to the house, please," Judy says. Oh. So the country bunnies are Judy's parents. Makes sense. I finally remember about the groan earlier and pull out my knife.

"Judy. What's going on?" Judy's mother asks. Are all the uninfected this stubborn? I hope not. I turn my eyes from Judy and her parents to the woodline, searching for that corpse.

"Mom. Please. Get back to the house. Now," Judy pleas with her mother. "We'll be alright. I promise. This is our job, after all," Judy says. After a few seconds more of searching, I still see nothing. And, now that I think about it, I haven't heard another groan, either. Did it leave? I hear Judy's parents, reluctant to leave, walk away back to their house before Nick and Judy turn back to me. The three of us are rather silent, unsure of what to say, before Nick turns his attention to the bunny corpse he shot earlier.

"Hard to believe?" I ask without realizing it. Nick only nods, which I don't blame him. I had the exact same reaction upon seeing my first corpse. Except, I didn't have a bunny who tried to warn me beforehand.

"These things have overrun Savage City?" Judy asks, turning to me. Didn't I say that earlier? Or maybe she's just wanting clarification. Yeah, I'll go with clarification.

"Yeah. There are survivors, though. Or, at least I hope there are. I was the only one to make it to the outside of the city that I know of," I begin to explain. Well, from here on, I can only imagine that it's Q&A now. Nick and Judy remain silent for a moment more before Judy straightens up.

"Well, we've got to do something. Savage City is still under protection of Zootopia. How bad is this outbreak?" Judy asks again. Yep. Q&A time, now. It's getting dark though.

"I'll tell you everything you want to know inside," I say, rubbing my left arm as a cool breeze blows by.

Jack finally makes itto BunnyBurrows, only to knock on the door of Judy's house, finally meetingNick and Judy, but not how he would expect. After being let inside, Nick andJudy ask Jack about Savage City, hoping he can tell them about it. Jack doestell them about Savage City, but it's not what they expected. Nick and Judydoesn't believe Jack that Savage City has zombies, until he takes them to thebunny corpse that was following him earlier, only for it to still be alive.Nick, acting quickly, shoots the corpse, allowing him and Judy to get a look atit, convincing them both that Jack speaks the truth. But, not without someanswers. Yet again, feel free to drop a vote and leaving a review is alwaysappreciated! Who knows? I might chat back. Peace!
