Chapter 1
It was the season of the rain once again.
Puddles on the concrete pavement, splashing sound as someone steps into them.
Kaylin held her coat tighter as she made her way home in the dark alley. The alley was filled with torn and old posters of job adverts, wanted criminals and all in all, rubbish that no one would spare a second glance on.
With the only light source being the end of the alley way, Kaylin felt the sudden need to make it through faster. She carried herself as fast as she could with her petite body. She threw the cap of the coat over her head and held her head low while walking faster. Apparently, this alley way has not only become a paper dumper but a place for the homeless to seek refugee as well.
She walked past a homeless man scavenging for food in a dumpster and she was not sure what was more revolting to her, the fact that the man was eating trash, or he was so desperate to do so.
She looked up slightly from the floor and knew it was a mistake instantly. Her eyes caught another, and shudder was immediately sent down her spine. She was not sure if tit was the cold weather or the intensity of his glare but none of this mattered as she wanted nothing to do with anything here.
"oi... help me" Kaylin stopped in her tracks.
"You saw me right... Why not help this poor fucker over here?" Kaylin looked up unwillingly.
"Who are you? Why should I help you?" Kaylin stumbled back slightly while gaining all the courage she had in her to speak up to this man. She swallowed hard back on her saliva and took another shaky step back.
"Why are you afraid of a dying man? Tsk, I thought I would die for sure, but you appeared, so why not asked... I'm dead either ways but maybe you... you can prolong this pathetic life a little longer." The man wrenched in pain as he tried to sit up right with what little strength, he had left in him.
Kaylin was not sure what to do as she stood there with the rain pouring. She bravely looked up to take a better look at this man who spoke to her. He wasn't special, he looked like a grungily old man who was beaten up by gang members alright. He was bleeding almost everywhere, he had wounds from his leg all the way to his face. This man was going to die alright, the fact that he wasn't was probably what spooked Kaylin more.
"So? After ogling me, what is your decision?" It was obvious that the man's breath is getting short and hastier. If Kaylin wanted to save him, she had no more time to lose. Now, the question was, why would she?
"What will I get in return?" Only god knew what gave her the strength to talk to this dying man over here like that, but she felt like she had to the right to know if he wanted her to save him.
The man wanted to give a sarcastic laughter, but the pain was so intense that all he could mustered up was a half assed chuckled. He winched in pain as he replied: "Listen, I was the top dog here, but I got back-stabbed by some fucker so here I am. I can give you protection aight? Personal guard and stuff ya? I'm pretty good at fighting." Even in his state, he still managed a smirk that for some reason, made Kaylin want to punch him square in the face.
However, she decided to take a leap in faith. No one knew why she made this decision, but she still did.
"Get up." Kaylin took a step forward and slung the man's arm over her shoulders.
"Careful there lady, I'm probably 10 times heavier than you." Kaylin stopped all her actions and glared at the man
"You want to be saved or not?"
That really shut the man up good.
With some miracle and aid from god, they made it back to Kaylin's house. It was a slightly run down looking apartment, with paint peeling off the exterior of the house and it was a neighborhood where obviously no one cared for.
Kaylin used all her strength that she never knew she had in her and managed to drag the man into her house and onto the sofa.
The man slipped off her shoulder with a loud thud and a groaned followed. Kaylin breathed out a sigh of relief that she managed to bring this man home alive. The man stayed silent and his eyes were closed, something was happening and if Kaylin do not act fast, maybe this story will just end here.
No no, that was not what Kaylin risked her life bringing home a dangerous man for. He is not allowed to die just yet.
Kaylin quickly whipped up a mental list of what she needed to help this man, first aid kit, alcohol swabs, medication and possibly water and food. She ran as fast as her legs could carry across the house and started rampaging through every cabinet and closet, she had.
"Why am I like this?" She questioned herself. Kaylin was not known as a kind-hearted person. She won't bat an eye to anything that happened around her, so long as it does not concern her. She walked past homeless man begging her on his knees, saw a guy getting beaten to half death, but none of them, she interfered. After all, this is zone D.
She managed to gather all the things she thought she needed and ran back to the man on the sofa. She threw the items down next to her and started to tend to his wounds. Except for the occasional winch and groan, the man was otherwise quiet and still. So much so that Kaylin wondered if he had died.
After an hour or so, she was finally done with the multiple superficial wounds. Some were deeper than others which led her to suspect if they are stab wounds. One thing for sure, the man was lucky to breathe another breath of air.
Kaylin used her sleeves to wipe the sweat off her forehead. It was then she realised her entire hoodie was mainly covered in splattered of blood. She sluggishly dragged herself into her room and change out of the bloodied hoodie.
"Well, this is all I can, so goodnight!"
