Zoe (Book #3)

This story is about my sister. I didn't come up with these ideas, she did. To my sister, Zoe Turner. :)

BTW, I only own Zoe, Clover, Rebecca, and Claire. No one else.

Where to start...... Well, let’s start at the beginning.

Clover Brooks here. I think you have heard of my other adventures. Freak, and my Birthday party? Yep. Those were mine. This is a story about my, um, sister. Her name is Zoe, but she is not a daughter of Athena. She is a daughter of Aphrodite. My family is a confusing bunch. This is written by her, so don’t be surprised to hear different sides of things.

Warning- If she says anything bad about me, then it is false. If you believe it, it will end in broken limbs.

Zoe POV

I hate the chariot races. They are pointless. People get hurt for no reason and all you do is go round and round in circles. What is with that? It makes no sense!

This past one was really stupid. The Ares cabin, of course, had to bring spiked fireballs! What are the odds? Since bringing ‘toys’ isn’t against the rules, they went all out. Even the people in the stands got hurt. Most of the harm went to the chariot racers, sadly, including my friends. Claire and Rebecca, both from the Aphrodite cabin, had some pretty nasty burns after the ‘friendly competition’. We were walking back to the Aphrodite cabin after the, uh, dodgeball racing. Claire had a hand on her arm, where a burn was still there, and Rebecca was complaining about her singed hair. Sure, I agreed that singed hair was not the best accessory, but I was getting tired of her complaining.

“It will take at least four weeks for my hair to grow back! What will I do until then?” Rebecca complained. I thought about the question.

“Um... put it up in a ponytail?” Rebecca huffed.

“Like that is ever going to happen! I have a dance coming up this next week and I do not want people staring at my horrible hair!” I was about to punch her in the nose and tell her to suck it up, but Claire put a hand on Rebecca’s shoulder. Claire spoke in a calm, relaxing and soft voice.

“Well, I could braid your hair if you want.” Rebecca’s attitude came to a halt.

“Okay. You actually can do good braids. I will take a shower tonight so it will stick tomorrow. In the morning, make sure to fill it with flowers.” Claire shrugged,

“Only if the Demeter cabin lets me. What kind of flowers do you want?” Rebecca scoffed.

“Um, how about ones that are deep red. That will go perfect.” I was getting tired of Rebecca’s way of doing things. It always had to be perfect, or she would go ballistic. I looked over at the dining pavillion on the way over and saw someone walking toward the forest with a plate of food. I recognized her immediately.

“Clover!” I called. She turned, her blond hair falling over her shoulders. She smiled and called,

“Hey! How was the chariot races?” I grabbed Rebecca’s and Claire’s hands and pulled them over toward Clover. When I reached her, I started to explain,

“It was a total wreck.” Clover looked confused,

“Why?” she asked. I began to tell her about the loose cannon balls that shot into the spectator stands. Clover grit her teeth,

“Oh... that can’t be good. Is everyone alright?” I nodded,

“Yep. Well, except for a few Hermes kids, but the rest of the campers are okay. Most of them with just minor burns.” Clover shook her head.

“I wish Leo was there to help. I bet he could have stopped some.” I shrugged. Clover was older than me by at least three years. So she was sixteen while I was thirteen. Well, almost. My birthday was October 5th and hers was May 20th. We were sisters, by, I have no idea, but we were. I had a brother in Hermes, a sister in Dionysus, and Clover in Athena. Our family was connected by brother and sister, but it was a very, I mean VERY, confusing process. Clover looked down at the plate of food which held eggs, bacon, a cup of orange juice, a pancake, and a cup of syrup.

“I have to take this to Leo. He slept in the bunker again.” she sighed and rolled her eyes.”This will be the twelfth time in a row. That is the downfall about being his girlfriend. I have to fetch his breakfast.” I laughed.

“Well, I hope he enjoys it then. How is the Argo II coming along?” I asked. Clover shrugged.

“It’s coming. Leo is planning on having it done by the summer solstice, but I doubt it. Even being a child of Athena, I can tell that something is wrong. I have tried to tell Leo, but he sort of get’s angry and swears at me, so I am leaving him alone to fix it for an hour or two. Besides, I need to work on my dagger skills. They are getting rusty.” I noticed that she had her mechanical pencil in her pocket. It looked like it had been collecting dust for a while. Clover continued, “I am taking him his breakfast then heading to the sword arena. You guys want to come with?” I was confused about who she was talking about, but then I remembered that my friends were with me. I nodded,

“Totally!” Rebecca tossed her singed hair behind her shoulders and said, “Well duh! I want to see this amazing ship of yours.” Claire looked nervous, but she nodded and whispered her reply, “Well, I guess so.” Clover smiled and her blue eyes gleamed.

“Great! Follow me. The path is kind of confusing. I have no idea how Leo was able to find the bunker in the first place.” She smiled and turned toward the forest, leading the way for us to follow.

* * *

The Forest has always, without fail, creeped me out. The sun was blocked most of the time, but there were many pockets of sunlight streaming through the canopy. It reminded me of the rainforest sort of, but this forest was more wild and full of monsters. Clover lead the way into the darkness, turning special ways to avoid traps of ants, bees, and every other kind of insect you can think of. Claire was cowering behind me while Rebecca was trying to put on a brave face. Claire’s body was shaking, but she was able to walk. She must have been really jumpy because every time something moved in the darkness, she jumped. Sure I was scared too, but not as much as her. I had faced monsters in the woods before, but I had never really got scared of them. Clover pushed some bushes aside and came to a line of trampled and pushed to the side trees, leaving enough dead grass to use as a runway for an airplane. Clover stepped over a stump and started to walk toward the bunker’s entrance/white cliff. Rebecca was tripping over branches and rocks because, of course today of all days, she had to wear her ill fitting shoes. Claire had a hand on my arm the whole time, using me as a sort of cane. Well, at least she wasn’t hurt. I had had enough experiences with that thank you very much! Clover pounded on the cliff and screamed,

"Leo! It's me! Let me in!" The four if us stood outside on the dead grass for a few minutes before the door began to take shape. Rebecca's mouth dropped open, along with mine and Claire's. When the door finally opened, Clover stepped inside and walled over to a work table, which had all kinds of of objects on it. But I wasn't paying attention to her. In the middle of the big room was an amazingly huge ship! On the deck of it was a boy, about 15 or 16, hammering on a piece of medal. The ship looked like one of the old Greek triremes, but more advanced. On the main deck was a control area with computer monitors and what looked liked wii remote hanging on a peg. It was a lot to take in and I think I did the best at it, compared to my friends.

"OMG! That is the Argo II? I want to travel on that!"  Rebecca said, gasping. Claire just stood behind me, her mouth hanging open. I probably want very much different. I had heard the rumors that were going around about how Leo had planned my sisters birthday party and had a huge dance party on the very spot I was standing. Clover had said the ground had flipped and multicolored dance tiles had popped up. I had trouble seeing the floor doing that. The kid, who I thought was Leo, looked up from his work and made his way down the ship. I was expecting him to go all out with cuss words, but he went up to Clover and gave  her a kiss on the cheek.

"Thanks sweetheart. Now get out of here before I go ballistic and you know I will." Clover nodded and kissed him in the cheek back. With one last goodbye, Clover punched Leo on the arm. This time Leo playfully hit her back and we walked out of the bunker. The door closed behind us and Claire took a deep breath.

“Wow Clover,” she said, “you and Leo are two peas in a pod.” Clover blushed.

“It’s hard sometimes, but yeah. I think we are a pretty good pair.” I rolled my eyes. Sure I was in Aphrodite, but this love talk was starting to get annoying. I pried Claire’s hands off of my arm and rubbed the, now red, spot.

“Clover, how do we make our way back?” asked Rebecca, who was turning in circles. Clover looked around, but seemed to be confused as well.

“This is odd. Usually there is something that marks the way, but it’s gone.” I turned in a circle as well, but all I saw were odd looking trees. I was scared and confused.

“We need to find our way out of here. Should we just start walking in a random direction?” I asked now looking at the ground. Clover shook her head. She looked at the lines of trees in all directions and said,

“The woods are dangerous. If we start walking in a random direction, the trees will start to make us go in circles. Maybe we could go back inside the bunker and grab a map or something.” She turned to the white cliff and banged on it once more. We stood there once more, but nothing happened.

“Leo?” Clover called. No response. I started to fiddle with my hair. I did that when I was nervous and I was starting to get scared. Clover pounded on the door once more, but still no response. Clover kicked the rock with frustration.

“Gods of Olympus,” she complained, “if Leo has the stereo pumped up I am going to kill him.” Claire took my arm again,

“You mean, we are stuck out here?” she asked in a soft voice, looking around at the woods in fright. Clover shook her head.

“Of course not. Maybe we could ask a tree nymph for some help.” Clover walked over to a random tree and knocked on the wood. There was a humming sound and a tree nymph melted out of the trunk. Her hair was a brown color, as if it had been made out of the wood of her tree and she looked only about four years old. She rubbed her head and looked at Clover.

“What do you want? You almost knocked my brains out!” Clover grimaced.

“Sorry, but we need some directions. Could you tell us the easiest way back to camp?” The tree nymph sighed and reached up to grab a leaf off of one of her branches. She plucked one down from a low branch and handed it to Clover.

“This will show you the right way to go. Follow the directions carefully or you will end up somewhere you don’t want to be.” Clover fingered the leaf and said,

“Thank you. I will see you around.” The tree nymphs face lit up and she said,

“You could come over for tea!” Clover smiled her older sister smile that pretty much said, Maybe when I want to. I hated that look. It annoyed me so much because Clover would always give me that smile when I was little.

“Bye!” Clover said, walking toward us again. The little tree nymph waved back and said,

“I will be waiting! Bye Bye!” Clover handed the leaf over to Rebecca who was trying to fix her hair.

“Here Rebecca, hold this.” Rebecca looked at it with distaste.

“Do I have to?” she asked. Clover gave her a hard stare. Rebecca backed up and took the leaf. I knew that was the smart thing to do around my sister. Rebecca turned it in her fingers.

“There is nothing on it. How are we supposed to follow it?” Right as she said that, the leaf turned in her palm. Rebecca freaked and dropped it. Clover caught it before it hit the ground. She let it easily move in her hand and the leaf pointed toward a random direction. Clover grinned.

“Come on! It is a compus!” I was confused at first, but I had enough sense to follow Clover before she rushed out of view. We tromped through the woods, jumping over rocks, roots, and logs.

“Could we please slow down? My sides are hurting!” said Claire, who was panting behind me. We were running full speed toward the edge of the woods, trying to avoid the traps and holes. Rebecca tripped in a hole and crashed to the ground.

“AH!!! My ankle!” she cried out and rolled up into a ball. I stopped and grabbed her arm.

“Rebecca we need to keep going!” I pulled on her, but she screamed,

“DID YOU NOT HEAR ME!! My ANKLE is BUSTED!!” I grit my teeth. Claire came slamming into me and pushed me into the ground. We landed in a heap and Clover stopped. She realized someone was hurt and came running back.

“What’s wrong?” she asked bending down.

“I agree. What happened?” asked Claire, sitting up rubbing her head. I sat up and rubbed my arm.

“Rebecca busted her ankle.” I said and I explained what happened. Clover bit her lip.

“This isn’t good,” she looked around and I did as well. “we need to go. The monsters already have our scent. They’ll be here soon.” The bushes rustled next to us and Claire clung to me.

“What is it? Will it kill us?” she asked in a scared voice. Clover looked down at Rebecca’s ankle and grimaced. She reached into her pant’s pocket and pulled out a mechanical pencil. She clicked it and it turned into a dagger. I was stupid enough to not bring a weapon. I patted my clothes and found my mirror. I pulled it out and flipped it open. The mirror expanded until a shield was hooked to my arm. Claire coward behind me while Clover protectively crouched in front of Rebecca, who was trying to pull out her own weapon. The bushes stopped moving for a minute. I exhaled, but as if on cue, the bushes parted and a fluffy mass jumped on top of me. Claire was able to move out of the way before I was pushed to the ground. I cried out and dodged a few bites to the head. I tried to get a good look at the creature, but with it thrashing on top of me, I could only tell that it had black fur. Claire kicked the monster off of me and I scrambled to my feet. The monster shook itself and faced us. It was a hellhound! It’s black fur was in tufts, as if it had been tossed in lava. I glared at us with evil red eyes, as if trying to be Medusa, wanting to turn us to statues. Clover stepped forward and stood in front of us. I knew that she would be the best person to defend us. She had been to camp longer than any other person out of our group. The hellhound studied us, trying to find our weak points. Before it could strike, Clover swiped at the monster. The dagger went straight through it’s ear, but that only seemed to annoy it. It growled and swatted Clover with the back of it’s paw. Clover went flying into the trees and landed in a bush.

“No!” I yelled. I ran to go help her, but the monster growled at me. I held up my shield and decided that Clover could handle herself. Rebecca was trying to get up, but she couldn’t move. Claire was standing in front of her, trying to shield her while I faced the monster.

“Anyone with a weapon I could use?” I asked, keeping a close eye on the monster. Before anyone could answer, the hellhound leaped at me. I swung my shield and hit it in the snout. Instead of slamming into me, the force from my shield directed the energy of the hit to make the monster hit the tree next to me. The hellhound howled and turned on me again.

“Zoe! Here!” called Claire. I looked over and she tossed me a celestial bronze sword. I caught it and faced the monster.

“Where did you get this?” I asked, not taking my eyes off of the monster.

“Rebecca had some lipstick in her pocket that turned into a sword!” she explained trying to help Rebecca stand up. I swung the sword at the monster, but it swiped it’s paw and deflected the strike. I swallowed and tried to stab at it. The hellhound stepped back. With one swift movement, the hellhound moved forward and clawed at me. I raised my shield, which deflected the strike, but the energy knocked me to the ground. The hellhound pounced on me again and started to bite at me. I whacked it with my shield and swung my sword at it, but I got nowhere. Then, right before the monster bit my head off, Clover slashed her dagger through the monster’s back. The hellhound howled and started to turn into darkness. I crawled away and looked down at myself. I had a few slashes in my clothes and a gash on my side, but nothing life threatening. Clover clicked her dagger back into a pencil and rushed over to me. I embraced her arms and we hugged for a minute.

“Thank the Gods you are okay.” she started to examine my wounds and face. I giggled,

“Clover, I’m fine.” She blushed and let go.

“I know. I just wanted to check and see if you needed anything Zoe. You also did a pretty good job fighting that hellhound.” I blushed and looked at my feet.

“Hey! Could we get some help over here?” called Rebecca, who was putting all of her weight on Claire’s shoulders as she stood. Clover looked over and her face went grim.

“Of course. Zoe, pick up the leaf and let it lead us. I need to help them.” I nodded and started to look at the ground. The leaf had to be around here somewhere. I found it near the hole Rebecca fell in and I picked it up. The leaf pointed to my left and I started to walk that way. Clover, Claire and Rebecca followed close behind, but going slower. We walked for a few minutes before reaching the edge of the tree line. I pushed some bushes aside and stepped into the clearing. Clover and Claire were supporting the weight of Rebecca as they pushed through the trees. Clover let go and said,

“I will go grab one of the Apollo kids. We need to get that ankle fixed.” I nodded and Clover took off in a run toward the Apollo cabin. I turned to face the others. Claire had some dirt smudged on her face and Rebecca had grass in her hair. I probably had twigs and leaves in my hair, but I didn’t care. We were all alive. Clover came running back with a blond haired dude behind her. When they reached us, the Apollo kid took Rebecca’s weight from Claire. He helped her toward the infirmary and Claire said,

“I’m going to go wash off my face. I will see you around Zoe!” and with that, she turned and left. Clover and I were the only ones left. Clover had a cut on her arm and was covered from head to toe in dirt. She put an arm around me and said,

“I don’t think we will need to go to the sword arena for practice, don’t you think?” I nodded.

“That already was a pretty good workout.” Clover laughed.

“Well I am going to go grab some snacks from the dining pavilion, want to come with?” I nodded again. I rarely had time with my sister.

“Totally!” and with that, Clover and I walked toward the dining pavillion, hand in hand.

Sorry if this story seems mushy gushy, but my sister wanted me to write it. Hope you enjoyed it! Vote and Comment! :3
