"I need space." Those were the last words your boyfriend told you before he broke up. Not that you were surprised. Always asking for time to be alone. You guys never really talked after a few years of dating. Sooner or later, it would have ended up with you two going your separate ways.
It did hurt though. The thing that led to that moment was when you brought up the idea of marriage. Miles was a man who enjoyed his own space. The two of you lived separately, but after being together for five years, you thought it was time to settle down and have a family. Regardless, you weren't going to stop him. He wanted his freedom, you wanted a family.
Miles did regret breaking up with you. He was scared. Scared of the commitment. He wouldn't be alone, and that wasn't so bad but he would lose his freedom. He loved living by his own terms. Having a family would cause his to rethink everything. He just couldn't part with his independence.
It was okay though. He needed this. He needed his freedom. And if breaking up with you was the way to keep it, he would. But it was so difficult. He had done so much, and yet his mind always came back wandering to you. He couldn't ask you to come back to him. It wasn't right, but if you came to him instead, he would ask you out once more. It never happened. It had been over a year. And he was still waiting.
As for you, you did move on. You hadn't entered into any relationships yet but were on the lookout. You had just finished work and was heading to a bar. You sat down at the counter drinking only in small amounts. Just then you hear a familiar voice. You turn and see Miles. He smiles at you, and you force a smile. He moves to sit down next to you.
"How have you been?" he asks.
"Fine. Work is going pretty smooth. You?"
"Same. Nothing much changed except..." He trails off looking at you. "I miss you," he says after a moment. "I was scared when you brought up getting married. I should have talked to you about it, instead of trying to push you away."
"Look, Miles, I got over it and-"
"I am not asking for you to take me back. I don't have that right. But I do want to be a part of your life again. As friends. Hopefully." you look down and took a deep breath.
"Look, as much as I want to be friends, we can't. You basically told me you still have feelings for me. Had this been months earlier I would have considered, but now... Things have changed. I don't think we should meet each other any more than we have to." You quietly pay your bill and walk out of the bar.
Miles watches you leave. He had no right to go after you. Right? You haven't spoken to Miles in a long time, but then he started showing up at places you frequent. A coincidence he called it. You didn't believe it and felt something was off, but you brushed it off. Miles wasn't capable of doing things like that.
With time you did end up becoming friends. You told him you had no intentions of getting back together, and he respected it. You began to trust him more and finally told him something that you been keeping a secret.
"I met someone a few weeks back. So, this person asked me out."
"What did you say?" He asks with interest.
"I said yes," you reply with a small smile.
"I...am so happy... for you," he replies. It sounded strained but nevertheless, you were happy.
"I can't wait to meet up with tomorrow. I will tell you all about it." You soon leave his home and he begins glaring. He had waited over a year for you. He had been patient with you. He was hoping you were going to come back to him and even went out of his way to find out your schedule. He did everything for you. He gave up his sense of freedom for you. Not anymore. No, he was going to get his freedom back. He was also going to get you.
You had soon entered into a relationship with your new lover and were happy. You would talk to Miles about your relationship and on occasion would ask for advice. Without fail, he would always help. He was waiting. Waiting for the right moment to make you his. Finally, the day came to be. Your lover was meeting up with someone else. The woman was married, and he was coming to her for marriage advice. He needed to act fast. He began taking photos of them. All of them to make it look like he was cheating.
You were at home when Miles showed up. He looked worried, and you let him inside.
"What happened?" You ask him.
"I think he might be cheating." he begins to show you the photos and you feel worried.
"This doesn't prove anything." Miles smiles at you sadly.
"I thought so too, but then I saw this." he shows you a photo of your lover holding a ring in front of the girl. Both of them are smiling." you began to cry. Miles hugs you. After him convincing you, you break up with your lover and you feel more upset. You were hoping to be in a loving relationship, but it was never to be for you.
Miles came ever so often to your home. Always comforting you. You were grateful you had someone to depend on. One day, you were hanging out with Miles at his home, enjoying your time.
"F/n." he begins. "Do you think we can start over?" he says hopefully. You put your drink down and look at Miles.
"I am sorry Miles. I am not ready to enter into a relationship again. Not after what happened with my previous lover. Besides our way of thinking is too different. We shouldn't be toge-" you stop talking when you notice Miles mumbling. "Miles?" you call out. He still mumbles. You gently touch his shoulder when he suddenly pins you to the couch.
"I waited, F/n, over a year for you to come back to me. I had found you by chance at that bar, and you told me you didn't want to talk to me anymore. I memorized your schedule in hopes of rekindling what we once had. I even acted happy for you when you got a new boyfriend. When he was planning on proposing, I had to have him go. I wasn't going to lose you." he says with anguish.
You are taken aback by his confession. He just admitted to have been stalking you and causing you to break up with your boyfriend. "Miles. Let me go."
"No. Because of you and your ways of leading me, my life revolved around you and only you. You made me lose my free will. Not anymore. You will be mine. And only mine."
