Flashback Day 1
Last week really had been a weird concept. Perhaps it was best to remember the things that had happened, and to hope they'd lead us up to this...
...because by the looks of it, they definitely would.
* Flashback; four days earlier *
Aries' pov
It was yesterday; the Ceremony, Aquarius' weird acting, the water gun fight. Nothing had really changed, except the weather. Had it been terrible yesterday, well, today was even worse. Torrential rain kept tearing down the flat, just as thunder storms and very strong winds. It was almost impossible to go outside of our apartments, because you'd be struck down by either the wind, or the streaming water, and lets not at all talk about the fact this place could be hit by lightning strikes.
Pisces had left me and Gemini for Cancer, to eat chocolate and be safe in Cancer's apartment with Netflix – which she had, and we didn't. Gem and I started playing Mario Kart, until Cap and Sag came over, and my sister joined them on a trip to the third floor.
And so, there I was.
Sure, I could have fun by myself. I didn't need other people around me all the time, but alone time would often get boring and things would only get fun again if they involved pranking Leo or others. But well, that option was pretty much cut out, as I'd get literally blown away with those winds.
There were about zero other options than playing Mario Kart to myself and that didn't last long too, because not even a minute after I started beating out Toad and Luigi, something seemed to snap inside and after all of the lights went out, the screen turned black too.
Grudgingly, I stomped through the hall – knocking over at least three chairs and I hit the wall quite some times – and I opened the front door. Immediately, all other kinds of sounds were taken away from me, because all I could hear now was the wind and the rain.
I couldn't even hear myself screaming "VIRGO" at the top of my lungs, but it seemed I didn't have to, because said-boy already stood outside his apartment, flashing me multiple helpless looks as I tried to get near him.
'What's going on?' I yelled, but it was overflown by a splash of water that covered us both. He gestured to get back inside and I followed him, while the sounds got down when he closed the door.
'Thanks. Now, what in Chaos's name is going on? What happened to the electricity?' I asked him, though I couldn't really see him because everything was dark again. Virgo remained quiet for a moment, but soon said: 'You know the way to the living room, right?' I nodded, then remembered he couldn't see me and answered: 'Yes, Pisces pulled me over here plenty of times to remember it quite well.'
I heard his footsteps and followed them, my arms in front of me so I wouldn't hit anything. Luckily, I only hit the wall one time, but I managed to get into the living room and it became clear why he'd wanted to go there.
Pisces and Cancer waved at me from the couch against the wall, while Gemini, Taurus, Sag and Cap sat at the table, eating something that looked like a mix between spaghetti and pizza, strangely enough. Aquarius and Furface sat in the corner – Furface looking quite annoyed by my presence – and the only one missing was Libra, but I only noticed that when Sagittarius yelled: 'Taurus, this pizzetthi thing is amazing! Remember me to tell Lib about it, okay?'
Candles lit the room everywhere, making it way less dark, and I grinned widely at the cozy sphere. 'Well, mister Virgo the Helpful, what's the plan?' I asked him, turning over so I could look at him.
Virgo frowned a bit, then walked further into the room. Things got silent right away, and he looked around as he started talking again. 'Alright, I think it is about clear that the electricity in this entire building and surroundings has stopped working due to lightning strikes?'
'You'd think we'd have noticed,' Capricorn shouted from the table, as laughter followed. Virgo smiled and continued: 'There are three possible options for us. One; we'd have to go downstairs, outside, into the basement –'
'Rejected!' Leo called from the other side of the room, at which Virgo sighed. 'Alright, next option: we will wait until the storm calmed down and after –'
'Who knows how long that's gonna take,' I interrupted him. 'This thing might last another day and I tell you; I will not last another day without my television.' 'And the lights!' Cancer fell in. 'Guys, what about the fridge?' Gem yelled, and the rumors became louder until Virgo started speaking again.
'Listen up, guys! There's one last option, but it's pretty dangerous and we'll really have to wait for the weather to calm down for that.' 'I'm sure we can handle it, we daily handle Furface's period,' I shrugged, earning more laughter and some cheers from the table. Virgo waited for them to calm down and for Leo to stop scowling before he said: 'The last thing we can do is to get to the extra source on the roof. If we can activate that, we'll have enough electricity during this storm, and when it's calmed down I will go into the basement and fix the real thing, okay?'
It was silent for a moment, until Capricorn started talking. 'The roof? Are you insane?' 'We're going to die up there, especially with this weather! Not that I am not willing to go,' Gem said, and she stood up to walk over to me. 'If that's what it's going to take to get back the electricity, I'm in,' she said and leaned up against the wall.
'Me too,' I stated, and me and my sister were soon followed by calls from Taurus and Sag. 'Fine, just remember not to walk near the edge, alright? We wouldn't want to lose any of you,' Virgo said, and the five of us moved back into the dark hall.
It was dark again, and we could already hear the rain and winds from outside, combined with Leo's voice, yelling she wouldn't mind losing me. I wanted to scream something back, but Virgo had opened the door and Gem pulled me outside.
We quickly moved over to the stairs and broken elevator, because unlike the hall with our apartments, that part was set against rain and wouldn't let anything through.
'Okay, so how are we even getting up there?' Sag asked, gazing from me to Virgo, who – of course – had a complete answer ready. 'We use the emergency stairs. They get us up, but since this is very dangerous, we need to ensure nothing can go wrong, alright? I will put on the source and make sure everything's working; Gemini,' he said, turning to my sister, 'can you, when we're on the roof, stay on the stairs, ready to warn anyone if anything goes wrong?'
'But I want to get on the roof!' Gem pouted, but nodded anyway. 'Yeah, alright. I suppose we can go another time.'
'Great. Taurus, Sagittarius, can I count on you to stay on both sides of the electricity set where I turn it on?' Virgo asked the brothers, and when both of them agreed, he turned to me. 'Aries, can you make sure everybody is alright? I mean, there's a risk any of us gets hurt, so if that happens, can you take them back down?'
'Sure I can,' I responded, and Virgo smiled. 'Good. Then let's go up.'
In the end, this might not have been a great idea.
But, this wasn't in the end. This was only the beginning and none of us knew what would happen if we pulled through.
Unfortunately, the emergency stairs were all on the other side of the hall, next to the apartment of Cap and Aquarius. The stairs were made out of metal, making them all slippery from the rain. I had to catch Gemini, who was walking in front of me, as she slipped on one of the steps and almost fell back. She gave me a thankful smile back and continued walking up.
The farther we came, the less we could see. Fog, rain, wind, anything and everything got in our way. Halfway, Virgo even yelled something about an empty pizza box he might or might not have stumbled upon, and I thought I heard Gem shouting something back at that.
When the top came in sight, I passed Gemini, who stayed back at the stairs, and the moment I set foot on the roof was yet another moment at which I cursed my height. I almost got blown away, and I could see even less than before. Taurus appeared in front of me, gesturing over to the other side, and I followed him – or at least, I tried.
I couldn't get forward thanks to the winds, trying to blow me back. Taurus noticed, luckily, and took my hand to pull me over to a construction not far away from us.
I saw Virgo, kneeling down to look at it, and Sag standing beside him. Taurus carefully let go of my hand and walked over to Sag. I could see he was saying something, because one does not move their mouth that way if they aren't speaking, so I got a little closer to catch the conversation.
Taurus' pov
'Do you think this will work?' Sag yelled over the wind, and I tried to shrug. The wind was pulling at my body, but thanks to my 6 ft. I stood where I was and I shouted back to Sag: 'Well, I don't know. Didn't Virgo say you should take the other side of this thing?' 'Yeah, but nothing will happen, for sure,' my brother responded.
At the same moment, a large stick was blown our way and hit my head.
Things were a little hazy and splotchy for a second, before it got clear and I saw Sag again, with his jaw dropped this time. 'Are you alright? I didn't see that one coming!' he screamed, and I nodded at that, as far as that was possible. 'I'm fine. Just go to the other side, before you get hit by something likewise!'
More sticks and also leaves flew our way; it was possible a tree had fallen, or something. Sagittarius stubbornly shook his head and he said something, but I didn't catch it through another stick, which hit the construction instead of us. Virgo looked up with a surprised expression, then turned to us and gestured us to step aside. Sag looked back at me, before taking a few steps away from the construction. I followed him and yelled: 'Sag, come on! You know you're not safe here, just get to the other side!'
'You're not dad! Stop commanding me!' he shouted back, taking another step away from Virgo and the construction. 'I can take care of myself, you know! You don't have to be all like Libra, just telling me what to do!'
'I'm not commanding you!' I screamed. 'I just want you to be safe!'
He seemed to be surprised at that, but his attention was quickly drawn away when another, thicker stick came our way and bashed against his arm.
I screamed, but neither he or I could hear it. Sag stumbled, but placed his feet on the ground again and grabbed his right arm, the arm that got hit. It might have been my imagination, but I thought I saw something red sparkling through his shirt. I looked back up at him, not exactly knowing whether to be angry or shocked, so I decided to be the first.
'See what happened? Just listen to me; go to Aries and she can take you back, alright?' Sag refused by shaking his head and looked up at me, ready to shout something back, but we both didn't see the next stick coming.
It hit his head.
This time it was Sag who screamed, though it didn't take long; his left hand flew up from where he got hit on his right arm, to his head, before he shut his eyes closed and fell down.
My eyes widened, before I kneeled down next to him and started shaking his left arm. He didn't move, but when I checked for his heartbeat, it was there – thank gosh. I wasn't doubting it, of course, but ensuring things isn't a crime. I tried to lift him, but he was heavy, and I could only get him up when Aries helped me by grabbing his other arm.
It was his injured arm, and that seemed to hurt him enough to get him back. His eyes opened, and I could hear him groaning softly in pain. Aries and I dragged Sag back to the stairs, where Gemini was still waiting. She seemed to be screaming, seeing her face, but I didn't hear it and the four of us descended the stairs to the hall.
As we entered Virgo's apartment again, things became silent again, and I heard all of us were panting and Sag was still groaning and wincing.
'A-Are we back i-inside?' he asked, with a soft and almost weak voice, that almost made me want to shrink in myself. 'Yeah,' I mumbled, and carefully lead him back to the living room.
Once we stepped in, I could really see what the stick did to him, and to be honest, it was worse than I thought. The right side of his shirt was covered in blood, just as a part of his messy hair and he had closed his eyes again. I was distracted by a high shriek from Leo, as we were quickly surrounded by people.
'Dude, what happened?' Cap asked us, and carefully took his right arm from Aries to help him to the couch. 'Where is Virgo?' asked Pisces, a scared look in her eyes. Gemini cursed and already started walking back, the same time the lights flashed back on.
However, no one really paid attention to that, as we were all worried over Sagittarius. Cancer had gotten some water from the kitchen and was carefully removing the blood from his head, while Aquarius went to search towels and bandages. As soon as we were sure his head was clean, Cancer started to fix the wound, quick and agile. Gem and Virgo came back not long after Gemini had left, at which Virgo was almost killed in a hug from Pisces and Gem quickly went to help Aqua with Sag's arm.
'Thank gosh we have people who are great at first aid,' Aries muttered next to me, and I nodded automatically. It was as if my senses didn't work anymore, things just went by in a trance. Next thing I knew, Sag was sitting again and trying to eat pizzetthi with just his left hand, while everything calmed down and even I was getting a little better. Soon, we found out it was evening already – and Sag was even more pissed because he'd skipped lunch – and we planned on making our way back to our own apartment.
That's where I remembered Libra.
Libra wasn't exactly happy when we got back.
To be a bit more specific, he was a combination between just angry, and extremely angry.
'What were you even thinking?! Are you guys insane, going onto the roof with this weather? No, don't answer me!' Libra screamed, when I tried to respond. 'Do you realize what could have happened? Do you even care about what happened? Am I seriously the only one who has responsibility here?'
'What, so you don't think I'm shocked by this?' I hissed at him, pretending not to see our little brother, sitting at the couch and trying to ignore us, but he failed horribly and so did I.
'You don't think I'm worried about this? You don't think I'm blaming myself for this?' I yelled back at my brother, but the second he tried to say something, Sag fell in for him.
'Tau, stop blaming yourself!' he said, and got up a bit. 'I didn't listen to you when you said to get to the other side, so basically it's just my own –'
'What were you guys even doing on the roof?' Libra snarled right through his sentence. 'Only idiots would go up there in a big storm; you had to know it couldn't possibly end well.'
'Can you stop whining? We survived, so there's no reason to worry for you, alright?' I got back at him, but he groaned and turned around. That's when I noticed Sagittarius had disappeared from the couch and I heard the door of his room smack close. For not the first time in our days here, I pitied him for having to share a room with Lib. Sag was done; Libra, however, was not.
He turned back to me and scowled right away, as he started pacing through the living room. 'Come on, Taurus. You're... acting so weird, lately. I mean, I know you're the though one of us three, but it's getting too much. I don't know if it's this place, or the people here, but if it's the last I'd certainly guess it would be that Aries-girl who –'
'Hey! Aries has nothing to do with this!' I interrupted him, but he looked straight through my thoughts: 'Got you. And no, don't tell me she's just an impressive person, someone who can change anyone's thoughts, or that she's just your friend, alright?' 'Okay, it seems you are the one who has gone insane,' I stated, and decided to ignore the snort Libra let out.
'Oh, sure. Something's going on, and you being so casual about it makes it even more suspicious.' Something in the back of my head snapped, and instead of ignoring his statements – which I really should, because I knew he was teasing me to test my temper – I threw back at him: 'Talk about yourself; if you hadn't noticed yet, you're the one acting completely mental, last days! One day, you're a control-freak, next moment you're being like me, which I don't like a single bit! And, now that we're speaking about girls anyway, how are things between you and Aquarius?'
Libra opened his mouth, but shut it again. The look on his face wasn't a very pleasant one, but he also seemed defeated and that was confirmed when he turned around, stomped to the same room Sagittarius just went into and the same door smacked close for the second time.
