"...Devil in disguise..."

-C O R Y-
"Welcome to Jitters, how may I help you?"
Crawford, My new boss,- which I haven't had in over ten years-decided to let me work counter duty for the day. Then tomorrow I'd be a waitress. And the day after that I'd work in the kitchen. He said it was to ensure which position I was most best at. In my opinion, none of this really seems necessary. I mean I'm only filling in for the next week or two, right?
"I'll order a medium blueberry muffin and..." The blonde women's eyes scanned the light up menu above me. "Strawberry milkshake maybe? I'm not sure, what do you suggest I get?" She sighed.
I shrugged, from the last time I spent practically camping here, I nearly drowned myself in the double chocolate milkshake we served. Not only that but I've also decided if my time were to ever come that's how I would want to die, drowning in a double chocolate milk shake preferably the size of Will Smith's house.
"I'd go with the basics I guess. They cost less and have more topping options."
The lady smiled gently and nodded her head in agreement. "Yeah You're right, why didn't I think of that? I'll have myself a chocolate milkshake with vanilla shavings on top."
"Good choice."I praised. "Its pure happiness in a cup." Before I rung her up and sent her on her way she shoved a five dollar bill in my tip jar. Mentally counting up the total it was now twenty-three dollars and sixty-seven cents.
Iris hopped over to the employee side of the counter."Wow, Cory. You're a natural. That costumer really liked you. In fact the people love you."
"You think?"
She dangled the jar in front of my face as an example. "If the money fits."
The bell rung for the hundredth time today, meaning another costumer was entering. I paid no attention unlike Iris who's smile seemed to widen, if that's even possible. If I wasn't constantly around Cisco, I'd find ability for a smile to reach someone's eyes incredibly weird much less intriguing. The critics in the magazines around here weren't sugar-coating when they described this place as popular and chic.
"Waiter!" Someone on the second floor yelled, hoping to earn one of the staff's attention.
"Duty calls." Iris nudged me in my shoulder. I could easily blame it on the sleep deprivation but it sort of looked like she winked. It was probably to help me keep up with the rest of my days. I rest my case on my overthinking.
"Hello?" I turned back around, focusing my attention to the front with a sheepish smile for keeping a costumer waiting.
"Oh-right, sorry. Welcome to Jitters, what would you like to order?"
For a brief moment there was silence, causing me too look up from clearing the register in confusion.
"Would you like a suggestion from the menu or...?"
There stood Allen three feet away with an utterly blank look. But then suddenly his face twisted into something further beyond realization and it was almost like wires in that tiny skull of his sparked. Before I could even blink his finger was wagged In my face.
"You-you're Cory Franta! The Cory Franta!"
Can't say I don't miss these little fan girl moments in public.
My face turned flat. "Yes, indeed I am. Do me a favor and yell it louder for the people in the back, would ya." I scoffed loudly. "Caitlin-you know that crazy girl from S.T.A.R Labs-and I had a bet going on," from across the counter I swifly packed a punch on his upper arm. He looked at me bewildered and slowly inched to the slightly aching spot.
"What was that for?!"
"You could've given it two more days and I would've won. In fact that ten bucks I lost is coming out of your pocket."
"Isn't there a rule here to not abuse the customers or something?" He looked around anxiously, not believing no one obliviously ignored the assualt. Especially considering the barista's here are nosy sharks who likes the bite the crap out of gossip and people's personal life. Excluding Patty and Iris.
I fit in so well.
"Are you gonna order or what?"
Allen ignored my question whole and leaned towards me in a whisper. "What're you doing here?"
"What does it look like I'm doing? Working, sadly enough for people like you. But between us, I'd rather work at Starbucks."
He looked to be slightly offended for a moment along with the people who waited in line, unluckily enough, within earshot. Scoffing as if I had no rude statement to say he crinkled his forehead in confusion. "Why?"
"Simple, to spell everyone's name wrong so they can't Instagram their cups. I'm doing my small part to help make the world a better and non-egotistical place."
Griping his hair in the clutches of his hands he sighed."Why do you still have an account? Aren't you 'dead'?" The two elderly ladies behind him widened their eyes considerably large in fright. But it seemed they didn't recognize me. Nonetheless, I wanted to groan loudly at the questions being fired at me.
"People think I'm being hacked right about now. So I can post all the pictures I want."
"Wait a second-didn't you post a Starbucks picture yesterday?"
"I never said I was non-egotistical."
He's torturing himself, putting his being in a confusing position as well as mines not to mention. If the questions don't take a pause the both of us will end up brain dead.
"What are you doing here I meant," Allen jutted a finger into the counter, repeating his second question of the day."Shouldn't you be in Starling city surrounded by your billion dollar lab equipment?"
"Like I said...working," I tilted my head to the side. "Were you looking for me? Was stalking my Instagram just not enough?" He couldn't have forgotten the fact I'm supposedly dead that quick.
A small blush tinted his cheeks. He was embarrassed at how bluntly I said it and how bad it sounded but In all fairness, it sounds bad regardless If I was blunt or not.
"I needed to discuss something really important."
"And a Jitter's cafe register was the place to do it?" I said, doing a quick sweep of the surroundings around us to emphasize my valid point.
He rolled his eyes obnoxiously. "I came by for my coffee break. There was no way I'd know you were gonna be here." He defended himself.
"Come on man, hurry up!" I raised a brow at the steady string of impatient costumers beyond Allen and the shaken women.
He glanced behind him as well and turned back around with a grunt. "We're not done here." He warned. Oh I'm really quaking in my boots now.
I watch him leave the line only to sit on a stool beside me at the bar. A smile broke out as he spotted my grim face. But I was the one smiling when he slipped a ten dollar bill into my tip jar.
⚡⚡⚡
Allen ended up waiting for only ten minutes, until my break rolled around. I found him entertaining himself by sticking two straws in his teeth, pretending to be a walrus. I couldn't help chuckling at the ridiculous sight. Of course he couldn't be like any other regular adult or socially awkward person and pretend to be doing something important on their phone. Then again an awkward person would impersonate a walrus, right?
"Lemme' guess, Pacific walrus?" Catching Barry in his silly act, he immediately huffed the straws from his mouth.
"Now what's so important that you needed help from little ol'e me?" I huffed an empty laugh. "You might as well write desperate on your forehead."
I expected to get a reaction out of Allen. But I was met with nail nibbling silence. He looked at me seriously, deep in thought.
"Have you been...feeling weird lately?"
"No."
"Not even a little bit?"
I gave him a once over while handing him water in a coffee cup. He mentioned wanting something earlier, but he didn't order and I don't know what he likes. I certainly wasn't gonna ask because then that would make me seem polite and I actually pay attention to the stupidity that comes out of his mouth.
Mentally I shrugged. You can't go wrong with water. Unless he's that less than one percent of our population who's allergic to water.
"No. Have you?" He stared down at his cup, still not having a sip yet, while I jugged down my caramel latte.
Im trying out new things. If I stick to the double chocolate milkshake I am royally invited myself to diabetes city.
"Well sort of. I think the lightning has something to do with it." Allen mumbled more to himself really.
"How so?"
He met my gray eyes once more. "Does this seem normal to you?"
Glancing down his hand started to shake. Faster than the human eye can manage.
I gasped, nearly tripping over my feet.
"There's plenty more of that too."
My mouth hung upon, not only because out of shock and curiosity but because when Allen did his strange magic trick he bundled up lot's of dust I forgot to wipe off. Another reason as to how I earned this job is an absolute mystery.
Feeling a penetrating tickle in my nose I sneezed into my arm.
"Bless you." Allen said and I faintly nodded but my head was spinning in circles. The Common side effect to the even more common dizzy spell.
"Thanks." I attempted to shake my head free from the waving feeling of nausea, but it never went away.
The tips of my feet were in search for the ground and before I new it I was floating another inch in the air, no doubt catching Allen's attention, I wrapped my foot around the sturdy table legs with a nervous smile and widened eyes-completely caught off guard by whatever just happened.
So that kind of weird?
"Are you okay?" Allen asked in concern.
I nodded vigorously. "Yeah of course, why wouldn't I be?"
"Judging by the death grip you have on the table, you don't look so well." I look down only to find out he was right. My knuckles were turning a sickly pale white and getting sweatier by the second.
Before I could reply I felt the presence of someone beside me. Then came Iris, popping out of no where with that face eating grin no one can ever seem to get enough of.
"Oh Cory it seems you've met my good friend Barry Allen over here." Here voiced was lace with artificial surprise and suddenly a light bulb flickered inside my head.
She planned this, Iris was trying to set me up with her "good friend". When I had to cooperate in the interview her boss had set up I had a hunkering feeling in my gut she was eavesdropping. My suspicions are now proven correct.
"Yeah," I ignored his presence for a second to focus on Iris. "What're you doing down here?"
"Well it's your break, isn't it," I nodded to which she beamed.
"Why don't I take over your shift. You two go and get to know each other better, yeah?"
Much to my dismay no one seemed to pay attention to my dramatic head shaking and aggravated expression.
"That's great, Iris. Besides I had to take Cory out somewhere."
"I'm sorry, what?" Picking up both of our cups and heading towards the door, Iris pretty much shoved us out of the store and into the busy sidewalk, but not of course without giving us each a subtle wink.
Allen sent me an evil grin, knowing he'd have to put up a fight to bring me where ever he's planning to bring me. If he's even taking me anywhere that is.
I was being handed over to the devil in disguise and people could care less on how I feel about it.
