Chapter 27

Since the waterfalls and the ship lay in opposite directions, Finn and Kassiopeia were forced to pass the treehouse, in order to find the vehicle.

After the heavy canister of water was dropped on the ground next to the tree's roots, they would have moved on, if Kassiopeia hadn't noticed fresh cuts in the bark. Vertical cuts, every couple of feet, all the way up to the trap door in the porch. As if someone had climbed it with force.

Their return occurred sooner than expected, yet it could not have been soon enough; Finn and Kassiopeia walked into the house and regrettably discovered that it had been left alone by Lena.

Puzzled, Finn searched in every room twice, only to confirm that she was truly gone. He had mixed feelings about the situation. Calling for her name when walking the earth only extinguished his faith.

"Lena promised me that she would not leave me."

"And now you zink she lied."

"No, on the contrary. I gave her my trust, and her disappearance can't take that away. I believe she was taken against her will!"

"From ze angry boy? He could not walk ze distance in one day."

"No, but he could fly it. His ship was unimpaired."

Finn darted to the neconox and mounted it before Kassiopeia could shape her thoughts. "What arr you doing?"

"We have to find his ship! If it's gone we will know it was him!"

Hysterically, he prayed for himself as their ride ran the same path they had taken for their escape just two days earlier.

"For all the times my assumptions about unfortunate events proved me right, I'm begging, invoking, and pleading as I grovel now, please let me be wrong this once!"

They got to the site and, with misfortune, observed a circle of dry brown grass where the ship had previously stood. Curse words rolled uncontrolled over Finn's lips.

"Where eez he going wiz her?"

"If he hasn't killed her by now, then she is his hostage on their way to Pluviam. Even if she makes it that far, she will most likely be murdered by whomever she's delivered to."

"What eez your plan now?"

"Take me to my ship."

"To contact your fuh-zer?"

Finn could have tortured himself with that question. He could have considered choosing one or the other, but he did not think of it as a choice. "No, there is no time for that."

The ship hung in the tree, just as Finn had last seen it. Struggled but determined, he climbed up using every branch like the step of a fragile ladder. He had stashed something behind the pilot's seat, which he now brought into the open.

"What eez dat?" asked Kassiopeia from down below.

"It's the hard drive. Please tell me you are in possession of some sort of tools, as it is impossible to fly this thing in its condition."

"Do you even know how to fix ze rocket?"

"No, but I have to try at least."

"I have a batta idea."

They rushed to a new location, and he could see it from afar; another spaceship. Judging by size it was quite similar to that of Finn or Arrakis, but its design was distinctive and uncommon.

Ages of weather and neglect had left it in a state of deep slumber. Half-sunken into the dirt, and covered by plantation, it was pretty well merged with the nature that slowly consumed it, but by ignoring the layers of greens it carried, one could conclude that it may still be intact.

"You have a ship!" said Finn amazed.

"Ya. How do you zink I made it to Genus Terra?"

Finn let himself down from the mount and walked up to the vehicle. Its glass seemed unbroken, which eliminated Finn's greatest concern. He looked at the door. It had faded writing on it, but it was able to be read after all the time passing.

"Kepler Space Program. Does this mean you lived in Westlake, too?"

"No. My city was called Apfelbaum, but zey had a KSP as well. Deez eez ze ship I stole to get here."

"Will it fly after all these years?"

"Arr you villing to find out?"

Bent on saving Lena, he removed the sticks and leaves from the ship's head and dug out its wings.

"Arrakis had his shot to kill her, but he didn't. Instead, he abducted her, and the only logical conclusion is that he needs her alive. But what for? And how much time does she have?"

He pulled the jammed hatch with an abrupt jolt and was able to open the door that had been sealed for over twenty years.

"If I do this, I might not come back. Are you sure you want to give me your only chance of escaping?"

"Over ze years I made deez planet to my home. However I die, I vill be here. Zer eez nozing dat I am more sure of."

"I suppose, deez eez goodbye."

Finn had lost any aversion he may have felt towards his opposite when he first encountered her and was only filled with gratitude and indebtedness.

"Kassiopeia, queen and mother of Genus Terra, you have my profound admiration. Your great personality has not only saved Lena's life when she fought death with her last breath, but you also saved me. Your generosity will never be forgotten."

His left foot stepped over the rim and onto the floor of the inside.

"Finden," she said, holding him back by his arm, "take deez."

She handed him a knife. It had a keen blade; self-made from something stronger than stone and gripped by sanded wood. His fingers embraced the grip and he investigated the carving of two initials: S. F.

"I thought you only acted in peace," said Finn, holding the weapon with confusion.

She gave him a strange smile, "Er. I am like ze neconox. Peaceful, but defensive."

"Thank you, Kassiopeia. For everything."

Again, she smiled, this time with appreciation, "Go save ze girl. And may you find what you arr searching for."

Finn knew which button would start the ship, and although he was surprised to hear UNA greet him from that older model of a foreign ship, she did not know his name and did not speak his language. He was well aware that Kassiopeia could command UNA to take him to Pluviam, but if he were to encounter any complications along the way, his hands would be tied.

Up until then, Finn had proven himself to be brave, with a lion heart and lively soul, but he was only a human after all and had his doubts as anyone would.

The hatch secured, and Finn fastened the seatbelt. His goal had long been to save somebody's life, someone he cared about, but until then he had not realized how much he was willing to give for someone else. Someone he thought he did not care for. Misguided his thoughts had been.

He was willing to give his life so that somebody else could live. He questioned not why he was so eager to risk everything he had, but with every part of himself, he was certain that it was the only right thing to do.

Finn blamed himself for many failures and tragedies, some even that may have had nothing to with him per se, but Lena's abduction was unlike any other of those past events.

If it wasn't for him, she would not be wanted dead by the government of Pluviam. It was in his responsibility, and as stubborn as he was, he withstood the idea of giving up before having tried everything in his power to rectify his mistakes.

Kassiopeia stepped back. The engines fired and upthrusted the ship, free from any major drawbacks. Finn had once again returned to zero gravity and let UNA lead the way. His attempts to change her language, in what could have been the settings, failed continuously.
