She woke up on her side with Takeo's arms still around her. They must've both fallen asleep like that. She wanted to get up, but didn't want to leave. She wanted to go home, but didn't want to go back. She wasn't even sure if they could go back. Takeo stirred. "Good morning," He whispered. He leaned closer as if he were going to do something else, but then he pulled back.
"Good morning," Trinity said back. "So, what's the plan for today?" her eyes threatened to close, but she was almost eager to get started on anything.
Takeo let go of her and sat up straight. Trinity turned to face him, his face appeared longer than it had the night before, "I don't really know. I guess we should start figuring out how we are going to get back home." He messed with his hair and looked at her with a smile, "Before we do any of that, you should take a shower first."
Trinity huffed, "You don't smell all that great yourself."
Takeo just laughed and got out of bed, "Still tired I see. I'll take the first shower so you can rest a little longer."
She didn't wait for him to say anything else. She just rolled back over.
The sound of the rushing water in the other room didn't help her fall asleep. She rolled over a couple of times and tried to cover her ears with his pillow, but no matter how tired she was she just couldn't drift off. Invisible claws tugged at her eyelids, practically begging for sleep, but the noise of the rushing water was all too familiar. It clawed at the back of her mind, digging for her lost memories. She finally gave up on sleep and sat up. She closed her eyes and listened to the water fall from the shower and the noise of it hitting the bottom of the tub. Pictures started to flood Trinity's mind. She drifted from reality.
"Momma, why did you bring me here?" a young girl with bright blue eyes was staring up at her mother. Her mother's face soft and warm. She was enjoying the sound of the water flowing through the river, the noise of the chirping from the baby chicks, following their own mother through the stream.
"Trinity," Her voice was as smooth as the sand she was kneeling on, "you are more powerful than you could ever understand. You may only be six years old, but in the future you will need to learn to master your powers. I brought you here to learn how to access these powers of yours." She lightly brushed the hair from the young girl's face.
"But daddy doesn't like my magic. He says it's dangerous." The girl was playing with the water, letting it run past her fingertips. Neither of them noticed the shadow looming behind them.
"Your father doesn't know what to think. He loves you and doesn't want to see you hurt. To him, you are as fragile as those ducklings." The mother duck led her babies near the child and she giggled.
"Momma, I want to be a duckling! They are so fun!" Her laugh was soft and sounded almost like bells, ringing in the distance.
"You can be a duckling. Just close your eyes and believe."
The girl followed her mother's advice and closed her eyes, her hands still running through the water. A blinding white light surrounded the girl for mere seconds before fading away. The girl was gone and in her place stood a golden duckling with sparkling blue eyes. The duckling started to pace and squawk; it was in a panic. The mother lifted up the baby duckling, making sure to be gentle.
"It's okay my child, you can be anything you want. I am right here. You are perfect the way you are. Just breathe." The duckling closed her eyes and started to relax. It laid down in the mother's hands. The white light returned and when it faded, the girl reappeared.
"Momma!" The girl embraced her mother, tears starting to spill from her eyes, "I don't want to do that again! It hurt, bad. We should have listened to daddy." As she sobbed, her mother sang a soft tune to the rhythm of the flowing water.
As the song came to an end the girl started to drift off to sleep. "You can be strong, my little Trinity. Even the littlest of ducklings can win the mightiest of wars. Sleep now, be strong later. Just remember that you are safe, as safe as what is waiting for you behind this waterfall." The mother continued her song as she scooped up her child and started walking the path back to their village. The shadow in the trees faded away.
Trinity opened her eyes. She remembered her mother and her magic. She really could shapeshift. A tear fell down her cheek. She didn't even notice the bathroom door open.
Takeo was walking toward her with his towel wrapped around his lower half. "Now that felt good. Nice hot water for when you are ready." He stopped moving, "Are you okay?" He had noticed that she was hugging one of the pillows.
She wiped the tear from her face, "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just ready for a shower." She sniffled.
Takeo sat on the edge of the bed, "What did you remember?" His eyes gleamed with anticipation, the water slowly dripping from his hair onto the white sheets.
Trinity finally made eye contact with him, "I remembered my mother. We were sitting by a stream. I had to be only six years old. I think, I think I shifted for the first time. It didn't feel good, it was painful." Takeo's face turned stone hard, "What is it now?"
"Did she mention a shadow or a waterfall of any kind?"
"She never mentioned a shadow, but I know something was lurking behind us. She did mention a waterfall though."
"This is very important that you remember this. What exactly did she say about the waterfall?"
"She said something like, 'you are as safe as what is waiting behind this waterfall' or something like that. I'm not really sure. Why does that matter?"
He was smiling now, "It matters because now we get to go home." His green eyes were sparkling as he asked, "Do you remember where this waterfall was? Was it in a forest or by the beach?"
"All I remember was sand, why?"
He laughed, "Yes, yes! I know exactly where to go! Oh, thank you, thank you, Trinity!" He leaned over and gave her a tight hug. She tried to ignore the tingling sensation she felt when his bare skin met hers. Could it have just been her imagination?
"What exactly did I do?" Trinity asked. Takeo held her at arm's length as he looked into her eyes.
"You just told us how we get back home."
