Trinity wakes up to the birds chirping outside of her tent, she knew it was going to be a bright and beautiful day. She yawned, stretched and somehow managed to pry herself from her comfort. When she steps outside of her tent she smells something cooking, but no Takeo around.
"Hey, Trinity!" She knew it was Takeo for sure, but looked around and couldn't see him anywhere. "Up here!" She turns to face the wall that has kept them boarded in and safe through their training. She smiles and waves at him before deciding to meet him at his spot up the wall.
It takes great effort to climb it, but once she reaches the top she's glad she made the journey. On one side, the side they have spent the most time on, she could make out the tops of trees that spread for miles and miles, forming the forest to which they have hunkered down at its edge. The flowers sprouting on vines that are hidden to onlookers except for themselves. The mysteries of the livelihood of the creatures who inhabit it unknown to all but a few. The once green trees she has observed in the land of New York is nothing compared to the luscious beasts these trees appeared to be, as green as the eyes of Takeo. They loomed well above the height of them, making humans look small and pitiful, unable to attack or consume their beauty.
On the other side, however, lies the small town that they had explored mere weeks before. From this distance it looks quiet, peaceful almost, hiding the horrors and fear that lie within. Trinity couldn't help but picture the young boy that she had seen and couldn't help or the man who's tent they slept in, knowing quite well he was likely killed while doing the king's slave work. She closed her eyes, overwhelmed by the memory of the scents and feelings she'd encountered.
"Hey, Trinity," she was interrupted by her mate, one of the only interruptions she would never mind. She faced him and smiled. "Thank you for joining me up here."
Trinity swung her legs over to the other side of the wall to face the forests as Takeo was, and shimmied her way closer to him. He held out his arm, waiting for her to scoot in close enough that he could wrap his arms tightly around her. She put his head on his shoulder and he laid his on top of hers, letting their breaths fall in sync. "Leave it up to you to find a view we have to work for," Takeo snorted at this, holding in a deeper laugh. He let out a breath that she knew he must have been holding for a while.
After a long stretch of silence, Trinity interrupted, "You don't have to be here you know." She felt Takeo shift uncomfortably at this mention. "There is nothing tying you down here. You've had great training, possibly too extensive if there ever was such a thing, so you can handle yourself wherever you go." Takeo snorted, "I'm serious, you don't have to be here." She kicked her bare feet through the crisp, morning air. She lifted her head to look at Takeo. He had such kind eyes.
"Nothing tying me down here, you say? You know I can't leave you, Trinity," He cupped her face in his hands, "I could never leave you," He stroked the sides of her face with his thumbs, making gentle circles on her cheeks. "It hasn't been easy, that's for sure, and it's going to continue to be tough, but we can handle anything, together." He leaned closer, his breath hot on her face.
Those words, she knew those words. No, her dream. It couldn't be, "But Takeo..." she was cut off by an explosion off in the distance. It was in the direction of the dirt town. The debris was carried through the wind out to the two of them on the wall. The blast of wind enveloped them as they were both blinded for a moment.
As the dust settled, Trinity saw the look on Takeo's face darken. "King Aurelius," he snarled, "He found us. We have to get moving." before she could say anything, Takeo grabbed her arm and tugged her off the wall with him. They both landed with catlike ease and started down the hill in a sprint.
"Takeo, wait!" She cried after him. The dream, it was true! She had to remember what happened next. She couldn't piece it together fully. It had been too long, it had started to erase itself from her memory.
"I don't know how he could have found you, Trinity," Takeo called to her behind him, not quite realizing that she had something urgent to tell him, though even if she stopped to tell him, it was still in pieces in her brain and would be of no help yet, "You haven't used magic in weeks. We have to keep moving."
All she could do was try to keep up and attempt to remember before the bad parts actually became true as well.
Takeo led them through the streets of the town and down a slim, dark alley way. Beggars grabbed at Trinity's skirts as she ran, trying to take something for themselves. Takeo was taking all the side streets, hoping he knew it as well as he thought he did, until he went barring into a towering wall. "How did we make a wrong turn!" Takeo banged on the wall in frustration, frantically trying to look for an escape. The town had changed since he'd been there as a child.
Trinity tried to calm him, "It's ok. I can just shift. I can change into a bird or something and fly us out." She closed her eyes and tried to concentrate.
"You can't now," Takeo was nearly yelling, "I know this town better than any other outsider. There's a slim chance he'll find us here, but if you use your magic he can use... he can use Jacob to sniff us out. Our best bet is to try and find a way out without magic to make it to the city center where the detonation went off." He was searching the walls for bricks that may giveaway to a secret hideout or for steps they could use to climb out.
Trinity crumbled to the floor in tears. She closed her eyes, knowing what was going to come next. "Takeo?" she whispered.
"What?" He snapped at her, still trying to find an escape. He turned to face Trinity, but what he saw was something worse. He didn't see the king at the end of the ally way, but another dark figure.
Trinity opened her eyes, "I think it's my dad." She couldn't keep the tears from her eyes as the shadow walked closer. "You're dead," her voice broke, unleashing all of her emotion, "This can't be real." A tear caressed her face and dripped down to her chest as she felt the rough arms of her mate embrace her shoulders, trying to force her to stand, but her legs no longer worked.
The figure opened it's arms wide, "It's time to come home, Trinity." His smile was genuine, but it was not her father. Something was wrong with him.
A second figure, cloaked in a robe loomed in the darkness behind her father, a crown atop his head and a staff at his side, "I've been waiting a long time to meet the two of you."
