Off-Script

Once Zak, Jess, and Marty arrived at the old factory, Jess filled them in on their mission. Zak would play a Protagonist named Jon, who just received a call from his client, Jake—played by Marty—and was on his way to his office. Jon was a date planner who set up his two friends—Jake and Marsha (played by Jess). Jake was about to propose when Marsha learned something important...Jon loved her. But, Jon was...well, a mess and would never admit he loved Marsha. So, that's where Zak and his team came in. Their job was to get Jon and Marsha together.

The plan was simple: Zak would show up, he and Jess would kiss, and that would be it. But then Zak turned the corner and saw...them.

"Garbage Men," Zak gasped, stopping short.

Garbage Men: one of the many forms of the universe's antibodies. If Zak and friends didn't play their part perfectly, the Garbage Men would sense that they didn't belong in this universe and, ahem, "take out the trash."

The three men in dark colored trash collector uniforms turned towards Zak like a pack of animals might towards an intruder. Their cold, soulless eyes fixated on him. Zak pulled his (Jon's) cap further down his face and proceeded to pass them; all the while, they continued to watch him.

A few minutes later, Zak reached the office; Marty and Jess were waiting. But before he could say anything, Jess said as she stood, "Let's get this over with; I have a French test to study for." She cleared her throat and then in a monotone voice said, "Oh. Jon. I have always loved you. I was afraid you didn't love me. Kiss me, you fool."

Zak shut the door. "We have a problem. Garbage Men."

"What?!" shouted Marty. "Here? Why?"

"Because it's trash day?" Zak flapped his arms. "How should I know? We just play our parts and we'll be fine."

"Suits me," shrugged Jess. She approached Zak and slapped him. "How could you?! All these years...you...you loved me. What do I do now?"

Marty folded his arms. "I thought we were friends! Now you want the woman I plan to marry!"

Zak made a swiping motion. "You don't love her! You're just jealous of my success!"

Marty gasped and then slowly lowered his head. "You're right. I've always been jealous. And...and I knew you loved her. I...I wanted to...get back at you."

Jess reached for Marty's hand and stared into his eyes. "That's in the past. We can still be friends." She looked over her shoulder at Zak. "But I love Jon." She ran and embraced Zak. "Oh, Jon."

"Oh, Marsha."

The two kissed as romantic music swelled. The lights darkened.

Suddenly, Zak felt something new towards Jess. She wasso...lovely, so...soft, and she smelled of peaches. Did she feel the same or wasshe following the script? There certainly was no way he could tell her how he felt.
