6. The Dollmaker Who Never Exists

Things that don't exist can suddenly pop up in some of people's eyes. And these things can lead to their demise as their desire and curiosity of said things grow.

This is the story of a young boy named Jim. Jim was enjoying his spring break by being a newspaper tosser, which is a bit profitable, since his parents were always busy.

Back before spring break began, at the grade school he studied at, He had heard reports of children being missing, and that posters have been spread around the neighborhood. He decided to take care of himself carefully, as to not share their fates.

However one day, as he was about to tods his last newspaper for the day in front of a 2 story, white wooden house, he stopped. There is one thing that he noticed, there are dolls facing out the windows, and there are more dolls inside. They look recently made.

"Huh. I never knew who lives here..."

Out of curiosity, he hopped off from his bicycle and walked towards the front door.

"I know I shouldn't be doing this... Ah, whatever."

He knocked on the door 3 times. However there is no answer.

After a while of waiting, he knocked it again, and the door opens.

It revealed a blonde haired girl with emerald eyes, and pale skin, dressed in a black, gothic styled dress. She was of his age.

"What?"

Wow, she's beautiful. Jim said mentally.

"Umm... Here's today's newspaper."

"Oh, thank you."

She took the newspaper from Jim's hand, and looked at him with a small smile.

"You look tired and thirsty. Won't you come in for some rest?"

"I... I don't know."

"It's OK. Make yourself at home."

Well, she does have a point since Jim is in fact, tired.

"Fine. But, just for a cup of tea, right?"

She nodded.

"I never got your name."

"Alice."

"Alice, huh? I'm Jim."

She opened the door a little bit more, and allowed Jim to get inside.

Jim opened his mouth in awe as he sees that the interior is gothic themed, and that there are dolls around.

"I'm sorry if my dolls scare you. I made them myself."

"Oh... You do, huh? Well they're nicely made."

"You're the first person to have ever praised my work. I'm flattered, Jim."

Jim was flustered, and he looked away, saying "Uuhh, Don't mention it..."

Alice giggled a little, as she took the wooden tray from her kitchen and brought it to the coffee table.

"Sit down on the couch, and let's drink shall we?"

Jim nodded.

They drank their tea, and afterwards Jim left for home. However something is making him even more curious of Alice, where are her parents?

The next day, he went to the park during his newspaper tossing runs, to have a break. He saw 2 of his classmates sitting at a nearby picnic table, eating hotdogs.

Jim ordered one for himself, and joined his classmates.

"Hey guys!"

"Hey look, it's the extremely hard working newspaper boy!" A black haired boy pointed.

"Very funny, Harry, and hello Biff"

"Hello." A blonde boy replied.

They ate their meals, until Biff suddenly spoke.

"So, Jim... We saw you poking around that white wooden house not too far from here yesterday."

"Hmm?" Jim then swallowed, before replying "Yes, what is it with that house?"

"What are you doing there?" Harry asked.

"Oh, I was giving a newspaper to the person who lived there."

Both Harry and Biff looked at each other, with weirded out looks on their faces, before facing Jim again.

"The person who... Lived there?" Biff asked, as he wiped his ketchup covered mouth with some tissue papers.

"Yeah. A girl, our age. Name's Alice."

"Uhh, Jim. There's something that I--"

"WE." Biff corrected

"WE, wanted to clarify to you." Harry finished his sentence.

"What is it?" Jim took another bite.

"That house is empty. There's nothing, and nobody lives there." Biff revealed.

"You're joking, aren't you? There's a lot of dolls there!"

"Dolls?" Harry raised a brow.

"Yeah, dolls. Somehow they seemed familiar but I shrugged it off!"

They decided to end their conversation and finished their meals after a few minutes (they ordered 2 more hotdogs per person).

Curious as to what Harry and Biff told him back at the park, Jim rides his bicycle again towards the direction of Alice's house.

He hopped off from his bicycle on the pavement in front of the house, and walked to the door.

"Alice? I came to visit."

Alice opens the door, her eyes had bags underneath.

"Oh, it's you Jim? Come in."

Jim went in, and sat on the couch at the living room as Alice prepares tea, just like yesterday.

As Alice pours the tea into his cup, she asked "Not tossing newspapers today?"

"Hmm? There's only one piece remaining. You can have it if you want." Jim handed over his last newspaper to Alice.

"Thanks. I shall read it."

Alice sat down on her armchair, and opened the newspaper, before whispering it's contents. As she continued to read, her free left hand reaches for the teapot and poured some of the tea into her own cup.

"So, Alice. Where's your parents?"

"My parents? Oh, they're gone. We're alone now."

"We? Who's we?"

"Me, and all my dolls... Including you."

Jim looked at the newspaper article which has a picture of one of the missing children, and he looked at the doll behind Alice, that looks exactly like them.

"Umm, can I go home?"

"Home? You are already at home, with all of the children who visited me."

Alice raised the cup to her lips, and took a sip as Jim stood up and dashed for the front door, however... The door is not there, only a wall.

"W... What the...?"

"You're in my world now, Jim. You can't leave." Alice puts the newspaper down on the table, alongside the teacup.

He turned around, as he sticks himself to the wall and looked at Alice, who is approaching him with an antique blade.

Nobody has ever seen or heard from Jim. 3 days later his parents filed on Jim's disappearance to the police.

And what's strange is that their investigation led to a rundown wooden house, in which it's wooden walls are already rotten. They can only find Jim's bicycle outside, and inside the house they found only one of his tossed newspapers.

The question is... who reads them? The house has been abandoned for decades.

Jim was never found, alongside the other missing children.
