Chapter 2
The next day Kari walked to school with Boom and Beats close behind. They entered the school and went to class. Boom and Beats were introduced to the class and sat behind Kari, side by side.
The day went on and the three met their older brother in the school yard then went home. When they walked past the game store Kari stopped and looked at it as a strange feeling crawled up her spine.
"Oi!" Boom hollered. "Kari, let's go!!"
"Yeah! We have stuff to do!!" Beats followed up. Kari looked at them and then back at the store.
"I... I'll catch up with you later. Go on home." She stated and entered the building, her older brothers shrugged and went home. Kari looked at a specific card pack of duel monsters cards and blinked. The foil cover glimmered in the light of the store and she sighed then picked up another, and another, and one more then went to the check out counter and bought them.
"Back again I see." Yugi's grandfather said with a smile as Kari payed. She nodded with an embarrassed smile.
"Y-yeh..." She replied then took the four packs and went for the door.
"I'll ask my grandsons to help you learn the game if you have the time." Kari stopped at this and turned.
"... That... I have time." Kari stated shyly and Yugi's grandfather called for the two. They came down quickly and smiled at Kari.
"Hey!" Yugi stated with a smile. "Nice to see you." Kari waved.
"You're finally going to try your hand at duel monsters huh?" Atem stated with a smile and Kari nodes.
"Y-yeh!" Kari replied nervously. The three sat down and then began to explain what each card type does.
"Ok. This is a spell card," Yugi started. "It basically helps your monsters out by powering them up. Some spell cards can destroy your enemy's monsters or weaken them. Trap cards are kinda self explanitory. Then there are monsters. Monsters are your defense. Some have effects others don't. It depends on the monster. Ok... Um, did I miss anything?" Yugi asked Atem.
"... Well there are somethings, like strategy but that is more of a play to learn kind of thing." Atem stated then looked at Kari. "I think you will learn better by actually dueling someone. After school we'll have a duel. Don't worry we'll go easy. You and Joey will duel. Tomorrow will be good." Atem smiled and Kari nodded.
"Kay. I'll be there." She stated and the two nodded.
"Alright. Tomorrow after school in the school yard." Yugi reminded then Kari left for home, feeling very excited on the inside. She entered her home then ate dinner with her siblings then washed up and went to bed.
The next morning Kari woke up with a stretch then realized. "... It's... Saturday..." She blinked, still a little dazed then realized. "ACK!!! I'm GONNA BE LATE!!!" She rushed out of bed and into her casual cloths, did her hair, washed her face, grabbed her cards, went and grabbed breakfast and ran out the door. "I'm going out, be back later! Love ya bye!" She called as she left, toast in her mouth, goggles over her eyes and skate board under foot. "Today's gonna be pretty cool." She thought as she bit down on her toast. "I'm actually gonna learn something NOT from my brothers... Like how to skin a boar or--"
"Hey!! Watch it!!" A man growled.
"Oops sorry!!" Kari called back embarrassed. "I'm in a bit of a rush this morning." "... I kinda got lost in thought... Oh! There's the school yard! I'm surprised it's open today..." Kari took the last bite of her toast and swallowed it then sighed. She entered the school yard and looked around. "geez... I can't believe they asked me to come to school on the weekend... Ugh... I could be sleeping or playing video games..." Kari sighed in defeat.
Kari began looking around and noticed a group of boys with a girl with them. Kari, being nervous and shy, hid behind the corner of the closest building and peeked to watch. Her eyes scanned each person, seeing if she could find either Atem or Yugi, or both.
"HEY!"
"MYAH!!!" Kari called in shock at the sudden yell. It was a teen with dark brown hair that had one spike in the front.
"Whoa, easy there. I'm not gonna hurt ya." He said, seeing Kari's sudden shock, trying to calm her down. "I'm Tristan. Nice to meet ya. You're... Kari, right?" Kari nodded quickly. "Cool! We've been waiting for ya. Come on." Tristin smiled and led Kari to the others.
"... That was kinda shocking... Ok... Breath, calm down..." Kari thought since she was all jittery.
"Guys she's here." Tristin called out and everyone looked at Kari, who jolted and clamed up.
"Crap! They're watching!!! What do I do?! What do I do!!! AAAAHHHHH I CAN'T DO THIS!!! I DON'T KNOW HOW TO HANDEL NEW PEOPLE!!!! I WANNA GO HOME AND BE IN MY CONFY BED AND SLEEPING RIGHT NOW!!!! ARGH!!!" Kari's thoughts screamed but on the outside she looked like a stiff stick planted firmly in place. Atem then came up.
"Hey, sorry about making you come on the weekend Kari. We kinda forgot it was a Saturday today, hope it wasn't any trouble."
"H-huh? O-oh... N-not at all..." Kari stammered.
"No need ta be scared kid." A boy with light brown hair smiled. "The name's Joey. I'm your opponent." Joey pointed a thumb at himself with a cocky grin.
"I'm Tea. Nice to meet you finally." A girl with short chocolate brown hair smiled kindly and waved. Kari waved shyly back.
"Alright, time to duel. Kari, We have a gift for you from my and Yugi's Grandpa. It's a duel disk." Atem handed Kari a silver duel disk and helped her put it on. "You place your monster cards here and your spell or trap cards here." Atem informed as Joey got ready. Kari took out her deck and put it in the deck slot. Joey smirked and was ready to go.
"Ready?" He called out. Kari nodded.
"Yeh..."
"DUEL!!!" They called out at the same time. Kari's eyes seemed to change. As if she had a feeling that she knew how to play and was going off of instinct.
"Draw..." Kari called and drew a card. "I place for cards. Then I summon Gem knight Garnet in attack mode." Kari called out. "I end my turn."
"Draw!!" Joey called out. The duel went on for about thirty minutes until finally--
"NO!!" Joey called. He had lost to Kari. Her life points at a thousand. Everyone just stared at Kari, who looked around.
"That was fun." She called out, showing a small amount of happiness with a tiny smile.
"Well, there is a tournament coming up," Tristin started with a thoughtful pose. "And seeing that you are more than capable of playing duel monsters, I'm sure you can enter." Kari blinked.
"Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that." Tea stated. "I'm sure Kari can enter! She was so good."
"... Uh... W-when is it?" Kari asked, tilting her head. "And where is it?"
"It's on a remote island far away and its a few months from now." Kari widened her eyes then heard rustling in the bushes.
"KAAAARRRIIII!!!" Called three voices.
"YOU FOLLOWED ME?! YOU JERKS!!!!" Kari snapped, her face turning red.
"I'm sooo proud of you!!!" Kitearo called out, hugging Kari.
"B-broth-ther!! Can't- Buh-breath!!" Kari wheezed and Kitearo let her go.
"Hey," Boom started. "Why did you never tell us about this! It sounds fun!" He called.
"Yeah! It looks real cool too!" Beats followed up. Kari sighed.
"Cuz I wanted to try it out first." Kari stammered then saw everyone else in shock. "U-uh guys. I'm sure you know my older brothers Boom and Beats."
"Hey." Boom waved.
"Sup." Beats called.
"This is Kitearo, my oldest brother." Kari introduced and Kitearo waved with a smile.
"Nice to see my baby sister's making friends."
"I'M NOT A BABY!!" Kari snapped and punched Kitearo's arm.
"You've done better." Kitearo sighed and gulped down the pain. Kari huffed and crossed her arms. "Anyways, I think you should join." Kari blinked.
"Wait, really?!" Kari called, her eyes glittering.
"That's amazing Kari." Joey called out.
"Yeah, that way you'd be able to see more duels and all!" Yugi called.
"But, you must promise ONE thing." Kitearo called. "And that is you will be safe and careful. I don't want anything happening to you." Kari nodded.
"Yes sir!" Kari called and hugged Kitearo. "THANK YOU!!!" She called and Kitearo hugged her back.
"You're welcome. Also..." He leaned his head to whisper in her ear. "No abilities. I'm counting on you. Kay?"
"Kay." Kari replied in a low tone. The two then let each other go and the twins along with Kitearo left for home while Kari hung out more, but not in the school yard. They went to the park to practice each time from then on. Sometimes by the docks or at Yugi's place. Boom and Beats would show up to watch and cheer Kari on, making her embarrassed. Eventually, the tournament was just weeks away and everyone was preparing.
