Immortality- Snund
Kay. I have a really really good idea for a snund story. I am writing a one shot to advertise it. It will be long, like an introduction. Anyway, if you like it and want a book about it please comment. Anyway, read on!
I walked. I just kept walking. There was nothing left to do in this dying wasteland. Food was scarce, economy was nonexistent, people might as well have been nonexistent. The numbers were dying, slowly getting smaller and smaller and I can feel it. What a shit immortal am I? I was supposed to save the idiot human race. I was supposed to save them, keep them somewhere safe. I let my own emotions get in the way. I can't do that.
I live forever. When I come across people, I just leave. There's no point, really. I help them as much as I can, then leave. I'm not going to stick around to watch them all die. Develop feelings, begin to make friends, maybe fall in love, then they all die. Even if they survive into old age, it's pointless. They will die eventually. Then I'll be all alone. The pain will go on forever.
I just can't die. I desperately wish I could. I've been walking around this world for maybe a hundred years? Let me tell you, although humans are pointless, they do not give up. Despite the shit going on around them, despite the dwindling food supply, the monsters lurking around, they keep going. They still have children, attempting to repopulate. They still do all of this stuff, just to be sure that they won't die. Even if their lives are short, painful, never happy, they keep going.
But I suppose by this point, all survivors left don't have memory of the old world. This is all they have known. Kill infected. Scavenge for food. Repopulate despite the danger. Bring more innocent children into this shit hole.
They are mostly teenagers, that have the kids. When the world was still normal, I remember hating how they would call teenagers horny. But now, I understand. These kids have nothing left, they have no idea how hard it will be to raise a kid, they don't know. They just don't know. And they get horny, they have sex, nine months later they are stuck with a motherless baby, because the mom was too young to give birth, and a father that doesn't have a clue.
I don't blame them for being horny. I wouldn't mind some sex every now and then. I never take up the offer when we go into camp. None of the ladies ever really strike me anyway. Even if they did I wouldn't want to be responsible for a baby. A baby that I watch grow up then die, while I'm still here, young as a 28 year old physically. That would suck.
So I just keep walking. I don't stop. When the infected come, a quick stab in the head with my machete does the trick. When people are in trouble, when I hear a scream I run towards it. I help them the best I can, take them to a safe place, then leave.
I remembered when this all started. I was with my girlfriend, and she got bit.
~Flashback~
"Goddammit! WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME," I screamed. I paced around the room frantically, practically pulling out my light brown hair.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry baby, I didn't want to worry you. I don't want to leave you alone," she sobbed. She sat in a chair in a small cabin we found in the woods. I remember the cabin. That cabin was awful. That cabin was the place where I was at, when the last thing I had left, my angel, she just died. She just, she was gone.
I freaked out when I watched her soul float up towards the roof. I watched it keep flying upwards, I watched it out the window until I could no longer see it. I then heard a voice. "You have been gifted, with immortality. Save the people, young one." I sobbed. I sobbed for days, and days. I thought my stomach was going to devour itself. I thought my throat was going to dry up completely, to the point where it was all shriveled up, and air couldn't get through. I prayed for it to happen, and it took me a month to realize it never would.
~End~
Tears were running down my cheeks again. God dammit. Why did this have to happen? This wasn't a gift! It was a curse! I was interrupted by a loud ear piercing scream. It was coming from the road ahead. I wasted no time, sprinting ahead as fast as I could.
From being immortal so long, I got used to the pain of things. The pain never killed me, so I just got used to it. I could probably go six months without eating or drinking before feeling any pain. I could run for miles without stopping, before my muscles got sore and my lungs burned. Even when they did I never stopped. Or when I got tired. I don't remember the last time I slept. It wasn't healthy, but it wasn't going to hurt me.
I kept my pace. It had been awhile since I found anyone, and to be honest it was refreshing. I got this sort of rush from saving people from death, stupid and selfish I know, but it made me feel like I was actually using my power.
I smiled to myself as a farm house came into view. The screaming was louder now. I quickened my pace, as I got closer and closer to the farm house. I could now see it was a pale blue color, with white accents. It looked quiet old, but I mean what do you expect from a farm house that was probably well over a hundred years old.
When I reached the door, I pushed it open. "Hello? Is everyone okay?" I heard some footsteps, then silence. I'm not surprised. I would be a bit freaked out if a large muscular man, with a bandana, machete, and MAC10 walked into where I was holding up during an apocalypse. "I'm not going to hurt you. I heard your screams, just hear to help," I said.
I heard more shuffling. "I won't hurt you. I'll leave my weapons on the stairs-"
"Do you know how to deliver a baby," I heard a feminine voice ask. I did actually. Before shit hit the fan, I was training to be a paramedic. As a paramedic, you learned the basics of everything, so I knew how.
"I uh, yes. Was that the mother I heard screaming," i asked.
"Y-yes. Y-yes it was. Please, help," I heard the feminine voice before call. I was pretty sure it was from upstairs, so I ran up. I followed the hallway to the right, and found a door that was open. In front of the door I saw a dead infected, and prayed internally it didn't bite anyone.
I opened the door slowly, to reveal a large room, probably the master. The bed had brown sheets, with a black bed frame. The walls were tan, and decorated in family pictures, which I purposely ignored.
On the bed, sat a young woman who was obviously in labor. Her brown hair was long, and the her bangs were slicked down to her face by a layer of sweat that covered her whole body. She had her eyes closed in pain, but she opened them slightly when I walked in, allowing me to see dark brown eyes. A tan blanket was draped over her lower half, but I could see she was wearing a green top, which was pushed up to see her large belly.
Next to her sat another woman. She looked a bit older, with strawberry blonde hair and deep blue eyes. Freckles spotted her face, and her hair was in a side pony tail. Her white under shirt was covered in blood, and her blue flannel shirt was as well.
"Hello? I'm Snake," I said slowly. The older woman looked at me curiously. Her eyes scanned me, making sure I didn't look like a bad guy. I understood I may have looked a bit intimidating.
"I-I- I am Nat Jund. This is Penny Jund, my sister," she answered slowly. I nodded slightly, slowly approaching the bed.
"Hello Penny? I know how to deliver babies okay? I'm going to help you," I said softly.
She nodded slightly. "Wait? How do ya know how," Nat asked.
I paused, thinking of a fake story. "My grandfather, who was alive before this all began, he taught my father who taught me. I know a lot of medical stuff," I answered back.
She nodded thoughtfully, and I internally prayed she bought it. "How old are you, Penny," I asked.
"I-I think... 19," she answered. I looked over at Nat, who was biting her lip. That's when I noticed that Penny was currently squeezing her sisters hand extremely tightly.
"Okay. Where's um... Never mind. We will see the baby in no time," I smiled reassuringly.
"His name is Scott," Penny said, taking a deep breath immediately after. I didn't bother telling her that it may be a girl, and just simply nodded.
~After Delivery~
I held the young infant in my arms. I felt tears streak down my cheeks. This always happens. Nat had left to find formula and fresh water. I was going to go, but the second I put the bundle in her arms it started shrieking like crazy. And ear splitting shriek. She quickly handed him back and said she would go find some formula.
I currently sat against the door of the master bedroom. I had blocked it from the inside with a dresser just incase. My mind wandered, from what I was going to do now to what was I going to do when I heard Penny's corpse knocking on the door.
I can't just leave them! I mean, Nat just lost her sister, and now has a nephew the take care of, and she didn't have a clue on how to do it. Plus she was probably emotionally wrecked. In addition, that would just be a dick move. It's time for me to man up. I'll stay with this group, for once.
I slowly drifted off to sleep. It has been a long time, since I slept. I was surprised there were no nightmares, but I wasn't complaining.
I woke up to bright son on my face. I opened my eyes and yawned. Looking around, I spotted three bags by my feet, along with a piece of paper. I sat up, but stopped myself when I felt something stir on my chest. Oh, right. I have a baby in my chest.
Carefully, I scorched towards the bags and note. I picked up the note and read the writing carefully.
Dear Snake,
I am sorry. I can't do this. Penny was the only thing keeping me alive, and now she's gone. I promised my father I could protect her, god I'm such a screw up. Even Scott doesn't like me. I tried to pick him up while you were asleep, he started screaming again. The second I let go he stopped. Here is all of our supplies we have, plus the formula and water. I wish you luck.
-Natasha Jund
As I finished the note, I felt tears in my eyes. This can't be happening. She left me, with a baby. The first thing I thought during this apocalypse was: I WILL NEVER BRING A CHILD INTO THIS. I guess I didn't really bring him here, but still. But I don't have a choice I suppose.
I looked down at the baby in my arms. He smiled slightly, them made a tint yawning sound and opened his eyes. His big brown eyes. He smiled at me. "Hello, Scott," I whispered. "I'm Snake. Welcome to this shitty world." I bit my lip. Should I say shitty? Ah fuck it. It's the apocalypse who gives a fuck.
As I stared down at the child I just felt something. I couldn't really tell what, but I felt something. I guess I'm stuck with you Jund.
