˜"*°•.˜"*°• Chapter 11 •°*"˜.•°*"˜
Yoongi has been really disturbed since the boat ride on the second day of camp. The trip is ending tomorrow, as in they return to the city tomorrow. Jimin is acting really distant with him, not that they were close in the first place... It's just that, they seemed to have a connection that night. When they talked, Yoongi felt so comfortable in the latter's company and it looked or felt Jimin also enjoyed his company. He just wants answers that's all. He is just confused of how Jimin feels towards him.
If Jimin really didn't question his sexuality and is actually straight, Yoongi is fine with it, he'll be fine with it. He will not force the boy nor spend the entire time thinking about the orange hair boy, if Jimin did not feel that way. But, it was never confirmed if Jimin is still questioning or he is into guys or is he into both guys and girls or if he does not give a fuck about what gender the person is or he just decided that he's straight.
Yoongi looks at Jimin who's having fun laughing, his small eyes becoming even smaller and falling on Jungkook, his orange hair is now covering his forehead. Hanuel looks at Yoongi and calls him, "Hey Yoongi oppa! Come join us!" She calls out lifting her chilsung bottle. Yoongi's eyes widen and look at her who's beckoning him with a wave of her hand. Then he looks at See-hoon who also smiles in his direction, Jungkook gets up to grab another red glass for Yoongi and finally Yoongi looks at Jimin. The boy stopped smiling and was replaced with a grim face, then a small smile appeared. It looks forced. Yoongi laughs awkwardly, shrugs and joins them.
Yoongi is sitting between Jungkook and See-hoon. On the other side of Jungkook is Jimin and next to him is Hanuel who's been all smiley since yesterday.
"So, tomorrow we are going back to the city?" See-hoon asks and Yoongi nods, "Yeah, there's a small fest and carnival tomorrow, so we will depart tomorrow morning after breakfast and we will leave!" Yoongi catches them up with the plan. "Thank god! I don't think I can handle your snoring anymore!!" Jungkook says, pushing Jimin. And Jimin laughs at this.
Oh god, his laughter is as beautiful as him, Yoongi thinks to himself and he flushes.
Well, good job on controlling your feelings stupid, he curses at himself.
"Well, you better get used to it Bunny boy, cause you will be spending the rest of your life with me!" Jimin confesses, which Yoongi's head perks up and stares at him Wait did he...?
"What do you mean by that?" Hanuel asks him, reading Yoongi's thoughts and Jimin smiles at her. "Well just like in FRIENDS, how Chandler and Joey become roommates. Me and Bunny are gonna buy an apartment and move in there!" Jimin explains. Yoongi lets out a sigh of relief. Jungkook looks down at his glass, as if he's embarrassed and he's hiding something.
"Well, changing the topic, Yoongi hyung?" Jungkook calls out, and Yoongi hums, "We have seen every nook and corner of this place, but we never went to the south west side of this place? I've heard there's a Buddha temple there and a killer view of the sea! So why don't we go?" Jungkook suggests.
Yoongi looks in the direction where Jungkook is pointing. His gaze darkens and looks down at his cup. He chuckles slowly, "I was wondering why no one in this batch asked about it? I was really shocked and happy to have no one asking about it," he says dryly.
"But, I guess, there are always curious cats everywhere, hm?" Yoongi raises one eyebrow and looks at Jungkook. Jungkook and everyone looks at him confused. "Wh-Why, what's up with that place?" Hanuel stutters. Yoongi dramatically stands up, "There might be a killer view of the sea and a buddha temple, but who has confirmed it?"
All of them share glances and look back at Yoongi, "There is a rumor around the city, that whoever goes to that side of the forest on a fortnight, when there is a full moon, they never come back. Sacrifices were made in that temple on the 15th day of every month, and the bodies were thrown into the sea or the pit of fire. But, one thing is that, whatever wish you made will always come true. Even though it was the 15th day of every month, no one wanted to take the risk and go there. And whoever did," Yoongi pauses, back facing the gang, "They never came back."
Yoongi points to the sky, "And won't you look at that?" All 4 of them look up and see a full moon, shining it's brightest, and dust clouds covering it. "Full moon, and it's not the end of the month," he says deeply.
Silence, only the rustling of the fire was heard and sudden gushes of wind. Everyone felt a chill down their spine as the silence grew thicker. Yoongi grabs his glass and looks at all of them, "Good night," he says walking towards his tent.
Even more silence.
"Well I ain't gonna risk my life and go there," See-hoon says, getting up and walking back to her tent. Jimin just shakes his head and goes into his tent.
Jungkook and Hanuel are left, they are just looking at the now dying fire, both of them lost in their own world. "I-I'm gonna go get an early sleep," Jungkook says, getting up. Hanuel smiles at him, "Me too."
"Good night then."
"Good night."
Both of them go into their tent and close it.
Jungkook could not sleep that night, curiosity taking over him. He kept rolling side to side in his sleeping bag, unable to catch a blink of sleep. Jimin's snoring was not helping him either. Jungkook sighs and sits up. "Fuck it," he whispers to himself and gets out of his sleeping bag.
He moves quietly around the tent, not wanting Jimin to wake up. He takes the bag which his dad got him as a gift. He scans the items in there, a swiss knife, rope, a water bottle, his camcorder, spare gloves and of course his scrapbook. Something says, he will need it tonight. Jungkook frowns, finding something missing, he looks at Jimin's side and finds it, his flask. Jungkook silently crawls over to Jimin's side and takes the flask.
He stills when Jimin stirs in his sleep, murmuring something. Jungkook makes out a few words which are "I'm sorry...ngi....oonie..." Jimin goes quiet after that, his heavy breathing takes over. Jungkook just ruffles Jimin's hair, hoping whatever problem his friend is going through he will be able to overcome it. Jungkook gets up, fastens his shoes and wears his gloves. He zips open the tent and silently steps out. Without the campfire roaring, the camp looks really dark. The only source of light being the moon which is shining brightly above him. Stars are scattered and sparkling.
Jungkook zips the tent and switches his torch on, starts his walk towards the south-west side of the forest.
The forest is not very dense, but because of the tall trees, it gets darker, the moonlight dimly shining through. He drinks from his flask and continues walking, constantly observing the compass on his phone
In some time, he's just left with his own thoughts. To whom Jimin was apologizing to? ngi and oonie? Hoonie? Who's ngi though? Is it- his thoughts came to an abrupt halt when suddenly he hears ruffling in the bushes.
Jungkook turns his head in the direction of the sound, flashing light. Nothing to be seen. He clicks his tongues, shakes his head and continues on.
Again, there's ruffling of the bushes, this time he turns back and frowns, and looks more carefully. Still nothing to be seen, he slowly turns back when a figure appears in front of him. "BOO!" the figure screams, and Jungkook gets startled, stumbles back and falls down. He grunts and looks up, he is greeted by Hanuel's giggles. "Someone said, when you hear noise in the darkness, never go towards it," she says, lending a hand to him. Jungkook just smiles at her, raising his eyebrow. He grabs on to her and stands up. "What are you doing here?" he asks. Hanuel lets go of his hand and grabs onto her backpack, "Let's go, if there's really a Buddha temple here, I have something to wish for." And she continues walking forward.
You really are full of surprises Baek Hanuel.
They continue walking on the disheveled path for a while, trying to figure out the way. The moonlight fights its way through the trees, sprinkling some light throughout the forest. After walking for a good 30 minutes, Jungkook starts panting and Hanuel notices it. She chuckles softly and finds a long log. She walks towards it, "Tired?" she asks.
Jungkook, full of pride, shakes his head, "No...not...at-at all!" he says in between breaths, and takes a step forward, when Hanuel grasps his arm, "I am, so sit for a while," she requests and sits down. Jungkook scoffs, but secretly is thankful for a break.
Jungkook lets out a sigh of relief and flaps his jacket to let the air cool him down. Hanuel hesitates for a minute then she speaks up, "Jungkook? Do you have alcohol?"
"Yeah I d-" Jungkook realizes that Hanuel, THE GOOD STUDENT HANUEL asked for alcohol! "Wait, are you serious?" he asks her, in all sincerity, Hanuel nods, " 's cold, so to warm up, and I always wanted to try," she confesses. Jungkook laughs, "Wah, Baek Hanuel you are full of surprises tonight eh?" he opens his flask and gives it to her, she looks at him for encouragement and Jungkook just gives her a proud dad smile.
Hanuel shuts her eyes and takes a sip, her eyes are blown wide and elongates that sip, gulping down the liquid. "Ah, ah, ah, stop, that's enough," Jungkook says, literally ripping the flask from Hanuel's hands. Hanuels licks her lips and hums, her cheeks slightly tinted. "That was so good! What was it??" she asks.
Jungkook points to the bottle, "This is omigesul, a Jeju Island specialty. It's similar to rice wine or sake, but made with fermented omegitteok. This liquor is commonly known as "millet rice liquor," or jopssal makgeoli." Jungkook explains, taking a sip himself. "How do you know all of this?" Hanuel asks, impressed by his knowledge. "Yah, I'm not as stupid as I look, wait," Jungkook defends himself and reaches for his bag, pulling his scrapbook out and hands it over to Hanuel. She looks at it, and opens the book.
Going through each page, first few pages having cities of Korea and few of them clustered with notes and pictures, only Jeju left empty. And the next followed by other countries' places having a single picture of the place, and the empty space waiting to be filled. Hanuel closes this book and hands it to him, "What is all of this, Bunny?" she questions. He keeps the book inside the bag.
"This is my dream. I want to see every nook and corner of this world Hanuel, not leaving a single place behind. And for that I had to overcome a fear, thanks to this trip, I did." Jungkook says.
"But your entire lifetime will pass by! When will you do other things?"
Jungkook frowns at her, "What do you mean 'other things'? Study till 23, get a job at 25, marry someone at 29, have a kid at 30, raise that kid, then have a few more. Wait for them to grow up. Retire at 60. After that, Jungkook looks into Hanuel's eyes, "Wait, till the day you die. And I don't want to live like that, and have no interest in a life like that." Jungkook gets up.
"Then what do you want from life, Jungkook?" Hanuel asks.
"Speed, adventure, madness, each day should be so eventful that I should feel the blood reaching my head, and hear my heartbeat in my ears." he pauses, looking towards the forest, "I want to fly, run, even fall and get up. Then run again, but never stop," he says with such seriousness. That is how Hanuel feels when she thinks about her dreams.
When people talk about their dreams, they seem the most human at that time, this was Jungkook's most raw and open feeling which he laid in front of Hanuel. Both of them look at each other with such a open feeling, it's broken when Jungkook speaks up, "Why am I tell you all this?" he asks rhetorically, in response Hanuel just smiles and gets up.
"No seriously, I've never had this kind of conversation with Jimin or See-hoon, why did I tell you all of this?" he asks. Hanuel just shrugs, "I don't know, in school you never greeted me properly," she snaps back. "Oh? Okay then, I'll tell you now," Jungkook does a small spin and a jump waving his hand comically, "Hi Hanuel," and gives his biggest bunny smile. Hanuel just smiles back, lost in his eyes, "Hi.." she whispers out.
They continue their journey, now with a comfortable silence. both of them feel comfortable enough and not willing to replace the silence with meaningless small talks. After some time, they reach their destination.
The Buddha temple does not seem to be in function, true to Yoongi's words. But it is open. The duo walk inside, and see the vast temple. It's a beautiful temple, painted with red and gold. Paper lanterns splayed across the ceiling.
Hanuel had got incense sticks and she lights them up, placing them in front of the idol. Jungkook took two mats for praying and dusted them outside. He came back in with a small smile and placed them in the middle of the room.
Time seemed meaningless, when did they reach? when did they leave? It felt like hours but at the same time, it felt like mere seconds.
The sea and buddha temple, was it even haunted? We may never know. But there was something miraculous there, the feeling was totally magical. That feeling was love. Such happiness both of them had never experienced before, they were in love. And they wanted to scream it to the world, wanted everyone to know that they were in love. But most importantly they wanted to tell each other, but instead they prayed for it, clasping their hands together, and wished for their love.
