65.Midnight rides
"Brownie, we need to talk about this," you said to the puppy lying awake beside you. "You've been having a sleepover with your aunt for over a month."
"I can't remember the last time we cuddled him to sleep," Shubman added from behind.
If Shahneel, the ever so supportive aunt was here, she would've asked you both to not gang up on him.
But at the moment, you just realized that you and Brownie weren't the only ones awake in the middle of the night.
You turned your head around, able to see him a bit clearly as your eyes have got adjusted to the darkness by now.
"Why're you awake?" You asked albeit not too loud.
"You're awake," Shubman replied with the same amount of quiet, an arm still resting over your waist.
Turning back to Brownie, you tried to make out the outline of his face. "I just miss you," you continued and felt him wag his tail enthusiastically.
He climbed over your shoulder and fell to the other side.
After a few minutes, he was not as active and slowly went back to sleep.
You turned around and caressed his head, pushing the comforter down yourself, making sure he doesn't get smothered under it.
Shubman moved a little as well, making some space for Brownie.
He's just a month and a half now. Puppies are quite fragile since their growth plates are open and their bones or weak, usually until the six month mark.
You didn't feel like sleeping.
Sure, you liked staying in bed, becoming a blanket burrito even during the day.
It was good there. Nothing ever happened. No people, nothing. Just you and Shubman.
"Shubi," you called, not sure if his eyes were still open or not.
"Yeah, baby," he responded, bringing a hand to your cheek.
"Are you feeling sleepy?" You asked, placing a hand on top of his.
"Not really," Shubman caressed your cheek while Brownie slept between you both.
"Shall we go for a drive?" You asked again, knowing you won't be able to sleep again for a while. "Alone."
"Of course, honey," he said without pausing a moment, already starting to get out of bed.
You followed, making sure that you both didn't wake up Brownie as you got off the bed too.
No one's going to look at you. You're good in pajamas.
With that thought, you and Shubman got downstairs, hand in hand as you walked out of the entrance.
He gestured for the driver to step out and the guards to not follow you both.
"Do you want us to take a different car, baby?" He looked at you before getting the car key.
"No," you shook your head. The Ferrari was fine.
Robin seemed really anxious as you got in the car.
Of course, because you both were leaving without any security, though there was a gun in the dash.
"Let loose, man," Jay said in a low tone from beside him. "He's just going for a nice drive."
The ignition was turned on, and Shubman put his foot down on the accelerator, driving you both away from a still visibly anxious person.
Oblivious to what you'll be in for once you return home.
He was spending too much time in his office or the headquarters as March neared.
Seems that he'll also be out of town at times, but only till the end of may. Something to do with annual meetings.
"Is this Shahneel's playlist?" You referred to the obscure music that was being played. It had to be.
"That obvious?" Shubman chuckled, speeding through the highway before he held your hand that was on your lap.
It really was a breath of fresh air to be out together for some time. Late nights, empty roads.
Pulling your knees to rest against the dashboard, you kept the window down, leaning your head on it and getting lost in the night.
The air felt wonderful, drawing tears as they hit your eyes continuously.
You know you'll catch a cold by the morning, but the place has never looked this beautiful, or unjudging.
In your pajamas, and you felt like you could run for a pageant and win.
You were thankful when the song changed to Eminem, because another abstruse song and you would've done it yourself.
"How long have we been driving?" You mumbled after a while passed.
"Thirty minutes," Shubman answered, caressing your hand that was starting to turn cold from the night air, warming it up a little. "Do you want to drive, baby?"
"Yes, but I feel like I'm two minutes away from falling asleep again," you replied. "I'll probably crash into the next divider, so I can drive if that's okay with you."
You looked over at the controls when he turned the car around, driving the way you came in.
"120 kmph, what are you trying to do? Chase the stars?" You looked at him while the surroundings kept fading into the distance as fast as they appeared.
"Something like that," Shubman said, turning to you.
His hand that was previously on your lap came up to your face, turning it towards his before he kissed you.

Your eyes closed for a second but when you realized where you were, you pulled back immediately, slapping his arm.
"Eyes on the road," you pushed his face away, sinking back into the car seat. "I'll kill you if we die."
"I wonder how," Shubman smiled as he kissed the back of your hand.
"Idiot," you muttered before leaning over, kissing the side of his neck and resting your head on his shoulder.
You entered the gates of the mansion after enough wandering under the moonlight, with only enough strength to crash in your bed.
"Do you have a favorite?" You asked out of the blue as the car slowed down.
"For what, sweetie?" Shubman undid your seatbelt for you after his, proceeding to wipe the almost-dried tears off.
"Those who work for you," you added. "At the beginning of our relationship, you used to call Robin for everything you wanted. Now it feels like he's lost his spot to Jay."
"They just do the work assigned to them," he replied, running his fingers through your hair and untangling the loose knots in them. "I necessitate Jay's presence only when Robin is busy with other important tasks. He's worked for me longer."
Shubman brought his hand down again, kissing your forehead before the car door was opened for both of you.
He got you both inside before anyone could say anything because you felt too sleepy.
You had an idea of just falling asleep on the living room couch. Climbing the stairs took too much effort.
But you did anyway, stopping only when you both heard a noise like something being dropped and broken.
"Am I hearing things now?" You looked at Shubman who shook his head as a no. He heard it too.
"Go to bed, honey," he kept his eyes on the stairs. "I'll be back in a minute."
"Not without you," you said, however sleepily, and walked upstairs with him, to the floor his sister's room was in.
It was dark in the hallways. Which in itself was odd.
His hand silently reached for where he knew the switchboard was, the other wrapped around your wrist.
He was ready to grab the gun that was always kept hidden away in a nearby console table, refraining until he was half-sure that this was a threat. You're still near.
When Shubman switched the lights on, he expected to see many things. His sister and his best friend canoodling against the wall was not one of them.
