4. Keith
Keith could not believe where he was.
He had heard screaming and woken up. When he opened his eyes, he saw white and assumed the screaming came from another room over in the hospital. Maybe a kid who didn't want to get a shot. But then the screaming came again, very near him. So he sat up and when he saw who the screaming person was, thought he might be dreaming still. Maybe even hallucinating.
Unable to say anything due shock and embarrassment, he remained still as a statue with his mouth opened in surprise. Out of all the things he could need to do, this was not the one he thought he would have to fix.
"Who are you?" It seemed Lance had decided that screaming would not solve anything and grabbed the closest thing he could find to use as a weapon. Grabbing the TV remote he hid behind a large potted plant by the staircase as he questioned Keith. He would be lying if the question hadn't stung a little. But of course. Lance had barely noticed Keith in high school. Why would he remember him?
Trying not to startle him further, he stood slowly and answered his question the best he could. "My name's Keith, I uh," he pondered telling him they had gone to high school together but decided against it, he wasn't asking that and he didn't remember him anyway, "I'm not here to hurt you or anyone. It's a complicated situation but I can--"
"Hey lance, why'd you scream? Who are you talking to?" A guy still in pajamas came down the stairs looking sleepy and interrupted Keith's explanation.
Lance came out from behind the plant and pointed his remote at Keith, "Hunk! There's a burglar standing right there, who else?"
Hunk! At his name, Keith instantly recognized him. The baking youtuber. Shiro loved watching his videos and tried making his desserts, but most of the time, he failed miserably. He remembered he and Lance were close friends. "Uh Lance? there's no one there. Are you okay?"
"What do you mean there's no one there? He's looking right at us! Call the cops!"
Hunk made it to the bottom of the stairs and placed his hand on Lance's forehead. "Do you have a fever? Hallucinating maybe?"
"Hunk, I'm fine!"
Could he not see him? To test out his theory, Keith walked up to them, much to Lance's discomfort. He jumped and tried to smack him with the remote. Instinctively, Keith flinched and he felt his body tingle right before the remote reached him and went through him. Lance's eyes widened and Hunk looked even more puzzled. "What, is there a fly in here or something? I don't hear anything."
"You're a ghost," Keith heard Lance whisper but he didn't think Hunk heard him because he had started for the kitchen, afraid flies would try to get to his utensils. "Hunk can't see you because you're a fucking ghost." His brows knitted together, "Then how can I?"
Keith took a deep breath, he was going to have to explain. Of course he wouldn't tell him the entire thing, like the fact that he had liked him since their time in high school but he would tell him the gist of it. "Look, there was an accident. My friend died but somehow I didn't. Though I did get hit hard enough that I was put in a coma. She told me to wake up there was something I had to solve. I fell asleep and woke up here. If you can see me, it must have something to do with you."
The brunet stood stock still and stared him down. He didn't move or say anything for what felt like forever until he dropped his remote and started chanting, "Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope," and going in circles around his living room until Hunk came back and stopped him.
"Lance what are you doing? You sure you okay, buddy?"
Lance took a deep breath and put his hands on his friend's shoulders, "Are you sure you don't see him?"
"See who?"
Lance stared at him for a couple seconds before deciding he was telling the truth and dropped his arms.
Of course he can't see me, Keith thought, he's not the one I've had a crush on for years.
"I'm going back to bed. Turns out I don't feel that good after all." As Lance made his way up the stairs, Hunk cast a worried glance at him.
"If you need anything, let me know. I'll be in the kitchen." When Lance was finally out of sight and Hunk heard his door open and close, he returned to the kitchen.
Keith was left alone in the living room with nothing to do. He thought maybe be should go to Lance but decided that might not be the best idea. Yeah, he wanted to get this over with as soon as possible but it was obvious Lance was pretty shaken up about it and if he burst into his room to tell him that he also had feelings for him, it would probably break him. He could give it some time. He had to get it right. He didn't want to make it worse and have to hang around there any longer than he had to.
Not knowing what else to do, he decided to join Hunk in the kitchen. Maybe he could pick up some baking skills from watching. Only when he was there did he realize no matter why he was in the kitchen for, it was creepy. So he decided instead to take a walk around the block and see if he could tell where he had ended up.
At the door, Keith tried to pass through the door but instead ran into it and smacked his face on it. "Fuck! I thought I could go through things!" He didn't bother keeping quiet if the only other person who might hear him wasn't even able to. But what about the remote? Then he remembered Effie had said he could still touch things. But the remote. Was it only certain things? He changed his mind for the third time. Instead of leaving, he would investigate what he could and couldn't touch.
He turned and headed for the remote that had been dropped on the floor. Keith reached for it, fully expecting his hand to go through it but made contact with it instead. "What the fuck?" He picked it up and set it back on the glass coffee table where it had originally been before Lance got a hold of it. That was when he remembered a second detail. When the remote had gone through him, Lance held it and his body had tingled. Did it have something to do with the fully living?
Just to make sure, he went around the living room running his hand over everything to see if he made contact. He did. So the fully living couldn't touch him? Interesting. He wanted to test his theory but there was no way to and nothing else to do. He couldn't even leave because opening the door would be obvious and even if they didn't notice, he had no way of getting back in. Not without moving things and scaring the shit out of every person in the building.
Defeated, he sat down on the floor in front of the couch. If he sat on the couch, the imprint of his ass would be noticeable so the floor it was. As he sat, he noticed a paperwhite kindle charging by the TV. Hoping no one would notice the change, he disconnected it and turned it on. He placed it on the coffee table so it wouldn't be seen floating and with nothing else to do, he found a book and set to reading.
Keith found it strange that he didn't fall asleep that night.
