Augustris - Heaven

@iread-836:

Augustus and Tris meet in heaven. Gus tries to kiss Tris because he thinks she's Hazel, and Tris slaps Gus because she thinks he's Caleb.

_____

It was so bright.

He didn't feel pain anymore. His leg felt brand new. Augustus Waters could jog forever. But where to?

There was nothing. A infinity of bright white nothingness stretched before him. Was this what it felt like being dead? Well, he couldn't be sure. He only remembered falling asleep, and somehow that night of his death, he knew. He knew that was the last night he'd ever see his mother or father again. Or Hazel. Oh Hazel Grace, his face brightened at the thought of her. She was the reason he had lasted so long. He had fought it, so hard, for her. She was his okay.

He strode on about the sea of Nothing. The air was warm. No breeze, no nothing. What was it to live in a world with nothing? Would he starve to death? Wait, he was already dead.

Augustus thought about food, could he not eat in heaven? Was he even in heaven? Augustus was sure he'd never done anything wrong to be sent to hell. So where was he?

Thoughts of his life rushed through him like a stream. Shops, the park, the literal heart of Jesus, his house. And as he thought, his vision filled with color. Where he used to see nothingness, now there was everything. His hometown. Ice cream parlors and a hair salons. McDonald's and Starbucks. They had popped into the road with a blink of his eyes. In matter of seconds the world materialized in front of him. But it couldn't be real. No, there was no people and still no breeze. There was always a small breeze in Indiana.

An idea popped into his mind, as he realized what was happening.

First thought: roller coaster. Then just as he said it in his head. A huge red coaster popped behind some buildings. It twirled around the tall skyscrapers and flipped in the air. He could hear the screams from the teenagers riding it all the way from where he was. He grinned. Though everything he liked was here, it still felt empty.

People. Augustus thought. And some adults in suits popped here and there. Kids on the play grounds and women walking to their offices. Where were his friends and family?

"Isaac." Augustus said aloud. But no Isaac appeared. "Mom. Dad." His smile faded as he saw no changes. Maybe they're home... Something told him it wouldn't be like that.

He realized, to his disappointment, the people on the streets, he didn't know. They were people he created. Isaac and his parents were in the real world. Living their lives, not here. Though he needed to try, even if it was useless, he had hope. What were all these amazing things for if he couldn't share them with no one he cared about?

"Hazel Grace." He called. His heart aching at her name escaping his lips. His voice was so faint he hardly heard it himself, but it didn't matter, because in front of him, there she was. Though there was something different about her. Hazel's hair was longer, and blonde. She was shorter, and on her collarbone there was a tattoo of three ravens in flight. Her face looked clean and soft and her eyes where blue. She wasn't wearing her cannula which worried Augustus at first, but then remembered this was heaven and she didn't need it.

Another thing that confused him was how she cocked her head as she looked at him. Her eyebrows furrowed. Her expression went from confusion, to worry to anger. Then it all faded when he grinned as he rushed over to her, embracing Hazel in a hug and twirling her in the air.

When Augustus let her down he pressed the side of his face to hers. and was about to kiss her when she stepped back and slapped the stars out of him. His face burned where she'd hit him as he yelled. "Ouch! What'd you do that for?"

"You were just about to kiss me, Caleb! Careful!" She said like she coudn't believe me. Her grayish blue wide eyes stared at him and made him feel intimidated. Her angry face was nothing like he'd ever seen in Hazel, it was full of menace.

"Well, yeah! And did you just call me Caleb?" He staggered.

"What the hell are you talking about?" She growled.

"What are you talking about, Hazel!" Augustus extended his arms. She slapped them down.

"But- But I'm dead! I died! David, Tobias...what happened to the serum? Did it work?"

Augustus understood nothing. He shook his head. "Hazel, how could you say you are dead? The cancer couldn't have gotten so quick to you!"

"Cancer? Hazel? You are not making any sense, Caleb, why are you here?! How did you die?!" She demanded, he hands turned into fists and Augustus was afraid she might snap his neck with one move.

"Who is Tobias? What serum? Why are you calling me Caleb?! Don't you remember me?"

"Of course I remember you!" Her voice faltered. "I gave my life for you."

"Hazel..."

"Stop calling me Hazel! I am Tris! Beatrice Prior!"

"Beatrice...?" Augustus tested the name. Who was this? She claimed to be Tris, but she looked just like Hazel Grace.

"Yes! And I am dead! I don't know what is going on down there!" She pointed at the ground. Augustus guessed she referred to the real world. "And all I can hope is that my sacrifice was worth it. That everyone is safe." Hazel continued. Her voice cracked. She dropped to the ground and cried. Augustus could see two more tattoos on her shoulders. A dark symbol of fire and another of two hands holding each other.

Was this really not her?

"I'm sorry, Tris." Augustus gulped. Kneeling next to her. Calling her as Tris when she looked so much like Hazel was strange to him. "I don't understand anything right now, really. I practically just died. And you look just like Hazel, m-my girlfriend. But I am not Caleb, whoever that is, you've mistaken me. I don't know what you are doing here."

"But you're Caleb, you're my brother!" She grabbed my shoulders with both hands.

"No. I'm Augustus Waters." She stared at him, searching for any sign of lie, but there wasn't any. The more they looked into each others eyes the deeper their eyebrows dipped. Was really this heaven?

"H-how did you die?" Hazel, no Tris, asked.

"Cancer. Got me in the leg." Augustus tried a laugh. "You?" He had no idea why he was laughing, but right now, that he was dead, there seamed no reason to be sad. What was there to do about it?

"I...got shot. After that I saw my mother, she's dead too." Her eyes gleamed with some sort of wicked brightness as if saying, I will find her. "And now here I am. I thought I would make it, I resisted the Death serum. I thought I'd see Tobias again."

"Who was the one who shot you?" Augustus asked, avoiding the real question itching at the back of his head. Who is Tobias? was he a family member, or something else? hearing Tris talk about him like that made his insides flare with a flame of jealousy.

"David."

"Curse him, David." Still not knowing who David was.

"Yeah." She sighed a shaky laugh.

"You look pretty deadly. What'd you do to anger him so much?"

"Destroy his experiment. He would've erased thousands of people's memories."

"And you saved the world?"

She chuckled and she reminded Augustus so much about her laughing Hazel Grace he was dizzy for a second. "Well, I don't know about the world, but Chicago as far as I'm concerned."

Augustus didn't know what to think. Where did she think she came from?

After a few minutes of quiet awkwardness Augustus spoke as another wave of screaming children in the roller coaster zipped by. "Well, I guess we just wait now." He didn't know if she understood, but he could only think about Hazel Grace, aging, finding someone else, marrying and having kids. Without him.

Somehow, he managed to smile.

"It'll take a while." Tris assured him, though he knew she was also trying to convince herself. She could read the sadness in his eyes, like she knew him already.

"Yeah, it will."

"We'll be okay, Caleb-" She realized she had caught herself too late. "Augustus! Sorry-"

"Don't worry," he chuckled. "You can call me that. I had sisters before, I'd like to see them again." He wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Want a smoothie?

"Never tried one before."

"Well you better! It's like tasting heaven....in heaven!" They both chuckled and raced to the smoothie store, Tris flew past him like a bolt, and Augustus felt good running again.
