Toshi held her hand as they walked through the park and on to a bridge over the creek. He looked to the water as he thought. She watched him quietly for a moment, before wrapping her arms around him, leaning her head on his shoulder. She looked out on the water, thinking back to their high school years.
He smiled and leaned against the rail as he stared into the water, hunched over a little made him a tad bit shorter. "Sachi... did you know I love you?"
She smiled softly. "I suspected as much." she said quietly.
He chuckled and looked at her then gently took her hands in his. "Sachi... I want you to come with me so badly to America..." he whispered. "But I know you want to stay and..." he trailed off.
She sighed. "I wish I could come too. But I can't put it off anymore. I... I have to figure out what I want. What I'm going to do with my life."
He nodded as he held her hands between his. "That's understandable..." he whispered and kissed her cheek. "I love you so much..." he whispered
She reached up, running a hand through his hair. "And I love you. More than I ever thought I could."
He chuckled a little and looked at her then gripped her hand between his. "S-Sachi... my love.... I want to be with you forever... and going away scares me... I fear I'll lose you again... s-so... I um..." he sighed and with one hand he pulled out a box and presented a ring as he looked at her nervously. "W-will you um... wait for me to come back... and then w-w-we c-can... um... get married if you wish... or still want to..." he said nervously. Sachi's eyes widened, and she gasped, looking from the ring to Toshi.
"Of course!" She kissed him deeply. "I'll always wait for you."
He smiled as he hugged her tightly and kissed her back. "You're so amazing... what did I do to deserve you?" he asked as he set his forehead against hers.
She smiled slightly, and shrugged. "I don't know what I did to deserve you either."
He chuckled again and put the ring on her finger then hugged her and kissed her. "Want to go out and eat?" he asked.
She nodded. "Where too?"
He thought then smiled and took her somewhere to eat. "Have you ever had something called tacos?" he asked
She shook her head. "Are they any good?"
"Yes." he grinned and took her to a small 'Mexican' restaurant. They got a table and sat down. He ordered the tacos and they waited.
She took a deep breath. "It smells amazing."
"I'm glad you like it." He whispered and looked at her. After a moment the food came.
She picked up a taco, and took a tentative bite. her eyes closed. "Mmm... that's... So good."
"They really are. Here try salsa, sour cream, cheese and guacamole." He smiled as he set the items around her. She put a little bit of each on her taco, and after taking a bite, piled more on. He chuckled as he looked at her and smiled a bit.
She finished her taco. "That was very good. I'll have to learn the recipe."
"It extremely easy." He said and smiled brightly.
"Really? Ever tried it?"
"Ya actually." he chuckled and took a bite out of one. She picked p another. They spent the evening together and soon headed out to go home.
"Thank you for tonight. It was great." she whispered.
"You're welcome." he whispered and kissed her before they went inside. The home was clean and Hugo was sleeping on the couch, November curled up on his chest as a movie played. The child was also sleeping soundly.
Sachi smiled. "So cute." she commented. Toshi chuckled and quietly cleaned up as he sighed. Not wanting to leave. The woman quietly took November to her room. Toshi finished cleaning up and and looked to Hugo, not wanting to bother him. She came back from tucking in November, and draped a blanket over Hugo.
"Well.... Um...." Toshi thought. "I um... do you want to sleep on my bed and I'll sleep.... um...." he wondered. She smiled, and thanked him, but she was comfortable sleeping on the floor. He gave her pillows and blankets then went to bed after she was set up. She fell asleep quickly, holding tightly to the ring, and his promise.
The next morning was a sad one as they got packed and prepared to leave the home. Sachi did her best to help, and keep it a little happier. Soon they were done packing and Toshi put things in the taxi as November sat on the couch.
Sachi sighed, and took his hands in hers. "I guess this is it."
"Ya..." he whispered and looked at her sadly. He then hugged her tightly as Hugo brought November to the taxi. The girl hugged her new friend and sniffed sadly.
She kissed him. "But we'll see each other soon, right?"
"I hope so..." he whispered and looked at her.
"Then lets make sure we do. No matter what."
Toshi looked at her wondering what she meant but said nothing. She glanced to the taxi, and pulled him into a kiss. He gripped her face and kissed her back as tears fell down his face. November watched them as she wiped her own tears away. She didn't let go of him for a long time, but she finally pulled back, panting slightly, she rested her head on his chest. Just wanting him to hold her. He wrapped his arms around her and held on to her as he buried his face in her hair.
She held onto him, not wanting to let go, but knowing she would need to. "How long do you think you'll be gone?" She asked quietly.
"I honestly don't know... hopefully only a few months... but... I'll let you know..." he whispered.
"You better." She smiled, trying not to cry.
"I will..." he promised and hugged her tighter and set his chin on her head. "I love you so much... thank you for everything..."
She nodded slightly. "Just... Promise me you wont get hurt. Please."
"Y... you know I can't promise that... but I'll do my best..." he whispered sadly as he hugged her more.
"That's all I ask." She kissed him again, and sighed. "I guess I have to let go know, huh?"
"If you feel you need to..." he whispered and hugged her more as he buried his face in her hair.
She held him tighter. "But that's it. I don't want too."
"Me either...." he admitted and fought back more tears
" I was really hoping it wouldn't be so hard."
"I know.... I'm going to miss my flight... but that's okay." he smiled.
"But you... You have to go. A-And help him. He's your brother." She said quietly.
"Do I though?" he asked and looked at her. He sighed and hugged her, then kissed her deeply before he said goodbye again. He got in the car and hugged his distressed daughter.
Sachi watched him, and waved to November. "See you when you get back little hero!"
She looked at her and smiled then waved. "Okay! Don't forget to be a hero! Bye Hugo! Be happy!" she yelled as she waved. The two waved at them as the taxi drove off. Hugo waved back until they turned the corner. Sachi sighed deeply as they drove out of view. She missed him already.
Hugo looked at her and sighed a little. "You going to be okay?" he asked
She nodded. "Yeah. Come on, let's go get you settled."
"Settled? Oh yes... does she know we're coming?" he said.
She took out her phone. "If she doesn't I'll tell her."
"I'll.... gather my stuff." he said trying to think about what he had. Sachi took the few clothes she had brought over, and packed it into her bag. Hugo glanced around the apartment and grabbed his small bag then looked at her. Render said she was waiting for them.
Sachi took his hand. "Okay, lets go." As they left, she locked the apartment. He gripped her hand and quietly walked with her as he thought. He felt lost in this world. It took them a little, but they soon made it to Renders house. She knocked on the doors.
Render opened the door and grinned. "Hi! come on in!" she smiled. Sachi grinned, and introduced her to Hugo.
"Hello." she smiled and the man chuckled a little. She showed them around the home and then gave them their own rooms. Sachi thanked Render. And took her stuff to her room. Hugo sat on his bed and stared at the room for a bit.
After a few moments Sachi came out of her room, and walked over to Render. "Sorry for being gone so long. Do you need help with anything?"
"Nope! Just relax and have fun." She smiled and Hugo came out as he looked around.
"But what if helping IS the fun?" She winked mischievously.
"Then by all means chop away." She smiled and gave her some vegetables. She grabbed a knife, and helped cut. Hugo watched and walked over then hesitantly helped them. Render smiled and gave them instructions.
A few weeks went by and Hugo was finally comfortable in this home and life. Render was just happy to have people around. Sachi was trying a few things, wondering if she'd want to be an EMT or not. Hugo and Render were supportive and everything Saturday night, Toshi would video chat her. She told him what she was thinking, and asked him what he thought she should do.
He thought for a bit as he furrowed his brow. "Well.... why do you WANT to be an EMT?" he asked.
"So I can help people. I... I liked helping you. And I wanted to help more people."
"That's a good reason. Now... why would you NOT want to?" he asked gently
"... I don't like seeing people hurt."
He smiled sadly as he watched her and he kissed the camera. "You're amazing. Go for it if your heart is in it." he whispered
She smiled. "O-Okay then. I'll give it a try."
"If you don't like it, try something else. I know hospitals need help was recovering patients. Mental hospitals need help too." he shrugged.
She nodded. "Thank you. How are you guys doing?"
"Okay I suppose... things are stressful..." he whispered
"I'm sorry. But... Are they doing better?"
"Yes... thank you...." he whispered and smiled
"Well that's good. How's November?" She fought the urge to ask if he was coming home soon.
"She's... adapting. Edwards and her have fought a lot." he sighed.
She frowned slightly. "Why not? I thought November would love to hang out with someone her age."
"She did, but they argue about stuff... a lot." he chuckled.
She smiled. "Well, I'm sorry about that."
"It'll be fine." he smiled and heard them fight. "I better go.." he sighed.
She blew him a kiss. "Love you Toshi.'
"Love you too Sachi." he smiled and kissed the camera before ending the call. She sighed, and closed the video chat. She then looked up EMT classes.
Hugo walked in and looked at her then sat by her. He was covered in dirt, grass and leaves. "What are you doing?" he asked.
"Trying to sign up for classes."
"Sounds fun." he smiled a little
"I hope so. What are you up too?"
"Gardening the old fashioned way." he chuckled and smiled a bit.
She grinned. "Any fun?"
"Not as fun but satisfying." he admitted.
She smiled. "Well, That's okay. What kind of things are you growing?"
"Well... a garden for vegetables and herbs." He smiled a little.
"Could I help you?"
"If you'd like to, yes I'd love the help." he smiled brightly. She smiled, and helped him for awhile. They seemed to relax more as they worked on the garden and he gave her a few tips. She would do her best to follow these tips accordingly, and soon the garden started taking shape. They worked on the garden for a while and she could tell he was doing better.
A month later, Sachi had finished her EMT training, and was starting the job. She got dressed in her uniform, with the cool pants, and put her hair up in a high ponytail. She came out of her room.
"How do I look?"
"Like an EMT." Hugo said as he stood in the doorway of the living room and drank out of his mug. Render rolled her eyes and hugged her friend.
"You look absolutely amazing." she smiled brightly.
Sachi smiled. "Thank you!" She hugged him. "Well, I guess I best go."
"When will you be back?" Render asked and looked at her as Hugo gave the young woman lunch.
Sachi thought. "Late. I have the night shift."
They hesitated and looked at each other than at her. "Good luck then." Render smiled. She hugged them both, before she left. They watched her go and looked at each other. She had been so busy, that she hadn't had time to talk to Toshinori. They hadn't been able to talk for almost three weeks. She sighed, and as she waited in the ambulance with her co-worker, she tried to call him. She didn't get a response and she saw it was about two in the morning there. Meanwhile in America, Toshi was sleeping with his head on the table as his phone lit up for a call. He had tried to stay awake for her.
She frowned. "Whoops." She said quietly, and texted him an apology. He mumbled something and slowly opened his eyes to look at the screen. He sighed and went to bed. Too tired to try and call her now. Her shift was long, and only slightly strenuous.
She got home and was pretty tired as the others made sure she ate. Toshi bit his lip as he thought about calling her. "Are you still hanging on to that woman?" his brother asked and narrowed his eyes. Toshi looked up at him.
"What do you mean?" he asked tiredly. "She loves me." he smiled.
"Does she? She hasn't spoken to you in weeks, no video chat at least. It makes me think she doesn't want to SEE you, or how much you've wasted away." he scoffed and walked out. Toshi stared at his phone and set it down. He hung his head as he thought about it. He was wasting away. Sachi tried calling him once more.
He looked at it and stared blankly for a long time. He shakily answered but didn't put the video on. "Hello Sachi..." he said and tried to smile.
She smiled. "Hey! Sorry about waking you up so early... And not for calling. Are you okay?"
"It's okay and yes I'm fine. How are you?" he asked and looked at her. She was so beautiful, as always.
"I'm good, I started work today."
"Really?" he smiled. "I knew you'd get into that program." he grinned.
"I couldn't of done it without your support. How are things doing over there?'
"Okay, I suppose." he sighed and rubbed his face. He glanced towards the other room. "I want to come home.... but can't... he still needs me..." he whispered.
She frowned slightly. "It's okay. I miss you though. I want to see you." She said softly.
He hesitated and glanced to the other room then at his shirt that got bigger. "I.... I don't.... think that's a good idea right now..." he whispered.
Her face fell, then she became concerned. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"Ya... oh ya I'm fine." he smiled brightly. "I just wanted to see your beautiful face." he said truthfully.
She pouted. "Well that's not fair. Why can you see me, if I cant see you?" She teased.
"Well you see there's this button that you push, where I can control if you see me or not. You pushed yours so I can see you." he smiled.
She scrunched her face, and stuck out her tongue playfully before turning off the camera. "How's that then?"
He blinked in surprise and whined loudly. "Sachiiii why did you do that?" he huffed as he pouted.
"Cause you wouldn't let me see yooooou!" She whined back.
"Sachi.... please...." He sighed and buried his face in his hands then rubbed his face. His brother looked at him then the dark phone, not realizing he was talking to her.
"She won't answer you." he said coldly and Toshi looked at him. "Why would she speak to someone who's wasted into nothing? You need to let her go so she can move on and find someone better. Stop dragging her down and making her miserable." he said seriously. Toshi looked down at his hands as tears filled his eyes.
She suddenly turned the camera back. On. She smiled. "Oh hi, you must be Toshi's brother! Toshi, I would love to get to know him, could I talk to him for a bit?" Her hand clenched into an angry fist.
Toshi hesitated and looked at her then at him again. The camera on his end was still off. "Okay..." he muttered and she heard him leave to take care of the kids.
As soon as Toshi had left, her expression became dark. "What the hell is your problem? He's there to help YOU, so why are you being so toxic?!"
He frowned deeply as he looked at her. "You don't understand the whole situation, so stay out of it." he growled.
"Then please, enlighten me."
He was silent for a few minutes then glared darkly. "I don't have time for you. Don't contact us again." he said and hung up.
Her eyes narrowed, and she came dangerously close to saying something. She growled, and turned her phone off, and walked out of her room. "That's it, I'm going to America!" She said, heading for the door.
"Wait what?!" Render shouted and looked at her as Hugo got up and followed. "You don't have money."
Sachi huffed. "Fine, then.... Then I'll wait until my first paycheck. Now excuse me, I'm going to go see if I can pick up another shift."
"Sachi." Hugo said and gripped her shoulders. "What's wrong?" he asked
She huffed. "That stupid brother of his, that's what's wrong! I don't know what's going on through that idiotic brain of his, but the one time I heard him, he was putting Toshi down. And I know how sensitive he is, and I will NOT stand for it." She said angrily, hot tears filling her eyes.
He nodded slowly as he thought and kept a hold of her shoulders. "First calm down, little one." he whispered. "And are you sure you want to go to America?" he asked seriously.
She sighed. "I can't let him go through that alone anymore. He needs someone there who cares."
He watched her and nodded slowly as he let go of her. "Okay... but eat first young lady." he said and went to the kitchen
She sighed. "Okay, and followed him into the kitchen.
They quietly ate and he wandered off somewhere. "Would you go along?" Render asked.
Sachi looked over at her. "Not if you guys want to come."
She nodded and glanced to the other room where Hugo went. "He found something out today... while trying to find his family..." she whispered.
Sachi frowned curiously. "... What?"
She set her cup down and looked to the other room then at her. "He only has one living relative left... and that's November Yagi." she whispered.
Sachi's eyes widened. "W-Wait, really?"
She nodded quickly. "Naomasa was helping him and they confirmed it with tests.... he doesn't know what to do." she whispered.
The other girl looked at the table. "Woah. That would be hard." She said quietly.
"He doesn't want to ruin anything...." she whispered and bit her lip. Sachi sighed. This did seem hard, and she wasn't sure how to help him. Or if she even could.
He came back and looked at an old box he had in his hands. He looked at her and smiled a little then gave it to her. "Here... take it." he whispered and she opened it to find it was his life savings. "Go to America and save your love." he smiled a little.
Sachi looked at the box and hugged Hugo tightly. "I can't take this from you."
"Yes you can... and you will." he whispered and hugged her more.
She closed her eyes tightly. "At least come with me, It's your money.
He hesitated and shook his head then gripped her face. "I saved this money for my family... to find them and bring them home... then to provide if I could... I don't have any family anymore except you... so it's yours now... I'm happy here and can live peacefully." He whispered.
She hugged him again. "Okay. Thank you."
He nodded and stared blankly then let go as he looked at her. "I... found out... that... little November is... my granddaughter..." he whispered.
Sachi smiled slightly. "Render told me. I'm so happy for you."
"Really?" He blinked in surprise and looked at the two. "You are?"
She nodded. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Well... I... um... she's happy... I don't want her to know... she needs to be happy where she is..." he whispered
Sachi nodded. "It's your choice... But I don't think she would hate you or anything."
He thought about it and nodded slowly then looked at her. "C-can I come with you?" He asked quietly.
Sachi smiled. "Of course you can."
"Oh me too!?" Render grinned and Hugo looked at her as he chuckled and shook his head.
Sachi laughed. "Of course! It'll be great!'
She squealed and jumped up and down happily. "When shall we leave?" She asked as she clapped her hands together.
"As soon as possible."
"I'll go buy the tickets." He said and walked off to the computer. Render went to quickly pack up, Sachi did as well.
"You'll have to let your job know." He said seriously, she nodded, and called them quickly. They told her this looked bad and she'd lose her job over this. Sachi sighed, and said she understood, but this was important to her. They fired her and got angry with her then hung up. Hugo glanced at her and bit his lip with worry
She looked to Hugo. "That's okay, I'll get a better job."
He smiled sadly and looked to Render then her. "Should we let him know we're coming?" he asked.
She sighed. "I don't think hi brother will let me call him. Besides, if we come unannounced he wont be able to do anything about it."
"Well that's true." Render smiled and they quickly got everything settled before catching the next flight to America. Sachi was excited to see Toshinori, but wasn't really looking forward to see his brother. Hugo had gotten them first class seats and he smiled as he watched her. Grateful he could make someone happy. Sachi decided to take a quick nap, since it was a long flight. It was night when they started and they had a long way. Hugo drifted off as Render stared out the window. They all fell asleep and woke as they landed in America. Sachi was unsure about the time zone, and it was weird. But she was excited to be here. Finally.
