Chapter 16: Choice
Awkward was an understatement.
There you were, sitting at the table next to Todoroki and his family as they all ate together. No one said a word. You would steal glances at Todoroki and he would just have this kind of
'I'm really sorry' look on his face.
"So Y/n." Todoroki's father Enji suddenly spoke making you sit up straight.
"Yes sir!" You were so incredibly nervous as to what he was going to say. Endeavor chuckled seeing you so jittery.
"I see your sister is doing well in the USA." He commented. You nodded, not wanting to say anything.
"She's doing better than you." Todoroki muttered loud enough for everyone to hear.
ToDoRoKi DoN't
Endeavor simply grunted, used to his sons' snide remarks.
"I'm surprised to see you in UA. I thought you were quirkless." He stated bluntly, making you grip your chopsticks a bit tighter than necessary. "You know, I also used to be a good friends of your fathers." You looked up from your plate making him smirk knowing he finally caught your attention.
"Really?" You said softly, scared that if your raised your voice it would somehow anger him.
"Yes, we even worked together for some time. He really had an amazing quirk. From whom did you inherit your quirk?" You swallowed hard before answering.
"Both of my parents..." Endeavor's smirk widened.
"All of their quirks?" You knew what he meant, and all you could do was nod. Endeavor surprised everyone by giving a out a hearty laugh.
"Amazing!" He wiped his mouth with a napkin and gave you his full attention. "Tell me, what do you think about training with me?"
"No!" Todoroki stood up from his chair from anger. Endeavor glared at his son. "This does not concern you." Todoroki glared at his father and reluctantly sat back in his seat and continued eating what was left on his plate.
"You don't have to listen to him Y/n." Todoroki added. You looked back at the #2 hero and was about to decline.
"I bet All Might hasn't showed you how to control that quirk of yours." You froze and dropped your chopsticks. "I was the one that showed your father how to keep it in check." You stared at your plate not knowing what to say at the moment.
Todoroki was completely confused and had no idea what was going on.
Is she actually considering it?
"What do you say? The best way to control it is to know how to use it." It was true, not what you wanted to hear, but true.
"We're leaving." Todoroki announced seeing how tense you got. He grabbed your hand and started pulling you away from the situation.
"The offer is always available Y/n." You heard Endeavor as you put on your shoes.
"Don't listen to that old man." Todoroki spat. You two were quickly out the door and you let out a breath you didn't even know you were holding.
"I'm really sorry about that." He apologized. You shook your head.
"No no, it's fine, really." You looked at the ground as you walked beside him. Todoroki could tell something was bothering you and that whole conversation between you and his father had him just itching to ask you what that was all about.
As you two kept walking, his curiosity got the better of him.
"What was...my Father talking about?" He asked. You knew that Todoroki would probably ask since you were making a pretty big deal about it.
"I, I got my mom's quirk and my dad's quirks."
"Quirks?" He emphasised the 's'. You nodded. "You have three quirks??" He asked completely astonished it was even possible. You nodded again. "And...what is it?" That was the only question you were hoping he wouldn't ask. Todoroki could see you were worried and was about to say something along the lines of 'you don't have to tell me if you don't want to' but he just couldn't bring himself to do it.
"Pain." You said finally looking up to make eye contact with him. Todoroki stopped walking, making you stop as well.
"Pain?" He repeated.
"Yeah, I can make anyone think they're in excruciating pain." You rubbed your arm in shame. "It's the kind of quirk a villain should have." You added. Todoroki was quiet for a while, trying to think of what to say but came up with nothing.
"I understand if you wanna keep your distance from me. It wouldn't' be the first time..." You mumbled the last part.
"What? No, of course not." He thought about how you quirk worked and tried to think of the positive side and finally he came up with something. "But doesn't that help you capture villains a lot quicker and efficiently like paralyzing them?" He asked in hopes of making you feel better, but you shook your head.
"When I inflict pain on someone, depending on the intensity, it comes back to me. It's useless, and dangerous, because when I get angry at someone, I, I don't know how to control it and I end up hurting them." Todoroki then remembered that time back when you two had an argument at the dome, you got mad at him and his arm hurt all of a sudden and then so did yours.
"It's not dangerous Y/n, I know you can control it, and with a bit of practice I know you'll have it down."
"How am I supposed to learn to control it when I have to practice on a living person??"
"Practice on me." Your eyes went wide. You never expected him to say something so...reckless.
"No."
"If it'll help you-"
"I'm not going to hurt you Shoto!" You shouted. He was surprised when you said his first name but got distracted when he flinched, feeling his arm hurt all of a sudden like before. You then felt the same pain in your arm and took a few steps back. "See? This is what I'm talking about." You turned on your heel and started walking away from him.
"Wait Y/n!"
"Please, not right now, I don't want to hurt you." You kept speed walking but Todoroki grabbed your hand and turned you his way. He gently put his right hand over your eyes.
"Can't hurt me if you can't see me." He was smart, and thought quickly. Although, you still felt frustrated and didn't know what to do with yourself.
Maybe training with Endeavor is the best way...
"What do you say?" He asked.
"I'm not going to hurt you Shoto." You still said his first name, showing him how serious you were about this.
"Then use that as motivation to learn to control it faster." You shook your head with your eyes shut.
"I know what I'm capable of Shoto, I've done horrible things, even to my own sister." You shuttered remembering the expression of excruciating pain your sister had and then what you felt shortly after. "I'm not putting you in that kind of danger."
Todoroki slowly removed his hand and you fluttered your eyes open.
"Fine, I won't obligate you to do something you don't want to." He put his hands in his pockets. "Just promise me you try to find a way that doesn't involve my father." You nodded your head. "Good." He finally smiled, making you feel relieved. "Now let's get you home before All Might kills me." You chuckled.
"That would be interesting." Todoroki raised an eyebrow. "Let's go." You tugged on his jacket. "And sorry about calling you by your first name Todoroki. It won't happen again." You assured. Todoroki was about to decline but he decided to keep it to himself. The rest of the way was a comfortable yet silent walk home.
"You know you didn't have to take me all the way home." You playfully rolled your eyes as you two arrived at the front door.
"Darkness is where the villains lurk." He joked, making you laugh at how true yet ridiculous it sounded.
"Thanks, for everything." You said once you two reached the front door.
"No problem, what are friends for?" You smiled sweetly at him and gave him a hug before taking out your keys.
"Thanks for the notes, see you tomorrow." And with that, you entered your apartment. Todoroki waved goodbye and then made his way back.
He opened his door and walked towards to his room.
"Hey." His sister Fuyumi greeted coming out of her room. "What's got you smiling?" She asked with a small smirk on her face but she walked away before he could answer. Todoroki walked into his room and looked in his mirror, and she was right,
He just couldn't stop smiling.
