Chapter 7
Loneliness can be defined as complete sadness or not having a significant emotional connection with at least one other person. Many things such as depression, poor level of thinking, stress, and suicidal thoughts can be derived from loneliness. No other feeling hurts more than the idea of being lonely. This is the reason why most of us end up doing things we have never imagined we would do. These acts either leave a good or bad impact on our youthful lives.
I was born and raised in an incomplete family. It was just my mother and I. Although I knew she did not want me, I always dismissed the thought of her abandoning me. I was so scared that it might happen. I guess a small part of me believed that one day I would wake up with a good mother with good morals and superseding love.
After going through so much pain and disappointments one starts to wonder whether the peace they search for actually exists. You hear lovely souls preach about the beauty and freedom brought along with love and think, why the hell you have never felt that way? Why me? What is my purpose if everything I do just goes south? Do I even have feelings curled up inside me? Will I ever know if I have such feelings?
Olivia's interest in finding out the magic (a bit of emotion) inside her ended when she reached a conclusion that revealed that it was not the right time for her to start dating. As a result she shut every channel that would arouse any sexual or intense emotions. But yet again something about this year's attitude made her want to learn. She wanted to learn why women felt dangerously in love and empowered each time a man told them they were the most beautiful creature they had ever seen.
She finally understood that it was not just about these words but about the mutual understanding shared between two human minds that makes them feel or desire to let go for a second and live in a world existent only for the both of them. He wants nothing but her and so does she. That is the beauty and magical part about love. The ability to enable whoever is hidden in you to be shown to the other single being utterly impressed by you. Olivia had a lot to learn about herself before she allowed herself to fall for someone else.
On her way home from the cinema, Olivia would not stop thinking about the text she had received. It read;
I'm sorry
It was sent from her mother's phone number. She did not fully understand this text but could sense the story behind it. When she arrived at home everything became crystal clear, Mrs Khohliswa had left. She had left Olivia with no money, food and her final two pairs of shoes in better condition than the ones she had on. Only the ones in terrible condition she did not take. That is why she had no other choice than to accept a job offered by a complete rich stranger who had seen her with all those marks indicating her mishaps with her mother
She tried to escape the pain brought along with her mother's elopement through packing her clothes in her sports bag. There was no way the landlord would have allowed Olivia to stay in her apartment for free. She did not own much. All that she owned were a couple of clothes, her last three pairs of shoes and all her school exercise books and textbooks in good condition. Cleaning helped her to think about events taking place in her life. Presently she was seeing no direction and future.
This weakened her so much that she could not congratulate Jayden on his impressive attempt with Reign. It was still daytime so she grabbed the opportunity and slept.
{Knock}
He's here!
''Hey.''
''Hi.''
''You ready?'' asked Toby, forcing himself into the small apartment.
''Um- in a bit,'' I said running to my room to collect my stuff. I was jumpy and sweaty all of a sudden. I had taken a shower and waited for him for over an hour. He was really late.
I looked at the apartment one last time knowing that I would not set my foot back in there again. I took the keys to the landlord's room downstairs. I was so glad Toby did not see anything out of the ordinary. He had a different car this time. Volkswagen Citygolf. It was not fancy but classic. I was shaking in fear whilst seated in a car leading me nowhere.
''Where are we going? Are you going to kill me in the woods?''
''Relax. We are going to my house!'' he answered in somewhat a sort of excitement.
The rest of the journey was traveled in silence afterward. I was car sick for two hours and could not do anything about it so I slept and woke up later in the middle of nowhere. It was just green bushes one after the other then I saw an old and a swampy lake. Unexpectedly we stopped in front of an iron gigantic gate. Similar to ones in prisons but better looking. There was not a security guard but just an excellent security system.
Toby parked his car just across a black SUV with a man already in the car. We walked towards him. He looked more nervous than I was.
''Dad this is Olivia the new employee'' handshake ''she'll be here with Cassie and me,'' he concluded.
''Sir I've seen you before. You own that oil company in the States. No wonder you have such a lovely home,'' I commented with genuine excitement.
''You are adorable little girl,'' His voice was strong and gentle. It begged respect on its own and made me smile gracefully.
''Thank you, Mr Landa.''
Toby was standing admiring the both of them conversing. Aunt Mary came out of the house running with two passports in her hand.
''Oh, darling. Stay well with my children. Sorry, we don't have enough time for instructions but you seem graceful. Take care,'' she said taking her seat next to her husband. They were in a hurry to the airport so they quickly drove off.
''Where are they going?'' I asked politely.
''Australia for my sister's pre-wedding rituals. They are going there to help. Shall we go in?''
Toby led the way into the mansion. I felt so much respect for the door as I walked in. Everything seemed so fragile and prepared to be broken by me. From the grand ceramic tiles to the flower pots hierarchically arranged leading the way to the drawing-room decorated and architectured with such exquisite taste.
A big crystal chandelier hung on the ceiling glowing like an actual star. The little furniture in the drawing-room was made of old-fashioned polished wood giving a clear picture of a woman's touch in the house. The sofas were very comfortable and well-padded. Everything about this mansion was spacious and massive! Olivia could not believe she was going to live here. Toby was practically living like a king.
''Carrie is not here to give you the tour around the house thus I will do it for her. There,'' points to an impressively white and modern kitchen, ''is the kitchen. The cook comes only once in the evening to make dinner and leaves. Now,'' we walk upstairs on granite tiles, ''we have about seven rooms here. This is your room. Call me if you need anything, I have to leave. I'm going to the city," stammered Toby feeling like he had to fully explain himself to her.
''Okay,'' I finally said, still processing the offensively rich house I had just stepped into. I watched Toby run downstairs and heard his car start. The gigantic gate roared in response to the command for it to open.
Olivia left the door wide open so scared that she was going to do something wrong. The expression on her face was priceless like one of a child astonished by such elegance. It was plain and spacious. Everything looked new. The white sheets, fluffy carpet, and even the French curtains. There was a wardrobe for her that reached the ceiling. She only had six dresses, two t-shirts, and three pairs of jeans to put in there.
There was a sign hanging on the handles of the wardrobe with words written;
"Sorry for my professional conduct but my child you have to be treated as a servant until we return. Therefore your uniforms are ironed and kept in the cupboard. Further instructions are on the laptop on the table. Have fun!"
The boss lady was so kind, thought Olivia. It was not a serious uniform but just t-shirts and slacks in white, black, and blue and new shoes of her exact shoe size. She closed the cupboard with great care making her way across the room to the table with a computer and small books and the laptop on it. There was no password. There appeared a schedule for everything. Medical emergency numbers, medication, and directions of the kits in every room of the mansion. I was not just a babysitter but also a live-in housemaid. I found no problem with it. I needed the money.
Olivia tried to make herself comfortable throughout the day alone in a mansion. She took a warm shower and went downstairs to the kitchen to make herself breakfast. She did not know most of the food in the kitchen so she fought her way to make eggs for her sandwich. She slept on the couch after failing to turn on the tv and fell into the dreamland.
