Chapter 6
''Mom!''
''Yes.''
''Which shirt should I wear?''
I held two hangers, one shirt on each hand. I was so frustrated by how I saw no difference in both colors. Casual clean red or clear navy blue. I felt so stupid and confused. Who knew that one day I would be confused as to what I should wear to a date. I was so exhausted!
''Where are you going Ballie?'' asked Mary politely.
''A date.'' I answered shyly.
''Where?''
''Mom just choose the right shirt for me, you aren't helping!'' I yelled frustrated. I was so nervous that I did not realize my rudeness.
''I am, trust me.''
''To the movies,'' I finally answered and sat on her bed. Mary was folding her husband's shirts into his suitcase.
''Ballie you cannot wear those. Try a simple t-shirt and keep the jeans. She must be special. I have never seen you so nervous before.''
''Thanks!'' I shouted joyfully running back to my room.
I took the grey t-shirt out of my wardrobe and wore it in front of my mirror behind the door. I put on some cologne and combed my hair one last time.
Shit it's too much
''What did I forget?'' I asked myself after getting my car keys and wallet.
The phone!
I ran down the stairs and shouted ''I'm out!'' on my way out the door. Carrie gave me a high five whilst eating a fresh apple. I started the black 4×4 Range Rover and drove away. I checked the time on my Rolex watch. I was early which was such a relief! I put on some music and stepped on it increasing the speed but paying heed to the street lights. I stopped at the first red light on 5th Street.
We arrived at the movies an hour later. It was packed. People were standing in the long queue to buy tickets. Everyone looked at us except for a group of teens sitting at the stools already carrying their tickets and popcorn and- is that chicken? There she was smiling at some guy. That must be Jayden.
She looked at us in horror, for a minute I thought she was going to kill us.
''Why are you here Olivia?'' asked Lizzy in anger.
That's her name. I like it.
''Toby Davis!'' screamed Jayden. I had never seen such love from a fan before. His excitement was beautiful, it made me laugh as I gave him a handshake.
''I'm Jayden, nice to finally see you no to meet you,'' said Jayden, removing his hand from my strong grip.
''Pleasure is all mine,'' I replied.
''These are my friends. Olivia, Sandy, Valentine, Vanessa, Bj, and Reign,'' he introduced each person smiling at the mention of their names.
''Nice to meet you. This is Lizzy.''
''Pleasure to meet you all,'' she smiled at all of them except Olivia.
I excused myself to buy Lizzy and me tickets and food. When the movie was about to start we all went into the theatre and took our seats. Lizzy was ecstatic. She was taking selfies, grabbing my hand, holding my shoulders. It was too much. I felt like I was her chaperone instead of her date. Inside, all of Olivia's friends were couples making her the third wheel. I chose to sit next to her. When I was about to offer her popcorn, Lizzy took the bucket from my hands then the lights went out.
''Hey Olivia,'' I whispered, seeing that the movie was starting, steering excitement from the crowd.
''Hi.''
''You know Lizzy?''
''We learn together. May I have my phone please,'' she asked politely and uncomfortably. She kept moving uneasily on her seat.
''Here.''
I handed it to her. She checked her phone in a hurry. Her Gmail, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Microsoft Word. We were watching The Upside. I looked behind my seat halfway in the movie to find Jayden and I think Reign? making out. When Olivia's eyes followed mine, she smiled gently at the act. Afterward, she received a text which she read with concern. She stood up carrying her small old leather bag and excused herself.
I excused myself after a short while realizing that Olivia was not back yet. Lizzy did not mind. I walked gently down the short steps outside the theatre heading towards the bathrooms. Luckily the gentlemen's bathroom was in the same direction as the ones for the ladies. I sneakingly entered the women's bathroom to find Olivia shirtless facing the same direction as I was wearing just her sports bra. The markings on her back scared me to death. They were imprinted belt marks some still fresh and oozing out blood she was trying to clean.
''What happened to you?'' I asked with care.
''What are you doing here?'' she asked in fright. She avoided looking at me and wore her t-shirt slowly and delicately.
''Sorry I was worried. Are you okay?''
''Dude you are in the Ladies' I should be asking you that,'' she giggles innocently, ''I'm fine. Please wait outside.''
I walked outside with many questions racing in my mind. Who could have done such a thing to her? She came out of the bathroom fully dressed now. She looked beautiful in her black long-sleeved shirt and vintage jeans. She wore the same shoes she had the first time we met. We went back to the theatre quietly and took our seats.
''I will take the job,'' she whispered, breaking the silence between us.
''You should know it's a move-in job''
''I will take it. When do I start?'' she asked looking deeply into my eyes. Her lips are-
''Tomorrow. Mom and dad are leaving tomorrow.''
The movie ended a few minutes later. We left earlier because I had to drop off Lizzy at her house safely. I could not stop thinking about Olivia and her scars and fresh wounds. Most importantly I was looking for a way to tell mom and dad that I had found a suitable babysitter compared to that old nanny. She was so demanding and old fashioned.
**Olivia is taking the job! This marks the beginning of her new life! Excited?😊 Vote and comment**
