Chapter 29
"Aunt Mary you can't do this. Please don't do this," Carrie was begging on her knees pleading for mercy and her change of mind.
"I will do anything mom. I won't drink and party but please don't do this." He was determined of his oath. Carrie and Toby were not ready and did not want to do this.
Back in Australia a couple of months ago, the wedding was spectacular and short because of the fight that arose between Toby and his biological father. It was not just a verbal and harsh conversation but a one-on-one and fist on another type of communication. In the middle of trying to smash his father with a champagne bottle, Aunt Mary intervened and asked Carrie to take care of her brother. She was the only one capable of handling his anger. No one investigated who cast the first stone and a family meeting was conducted soon afterwards. The guests were left shaken up by the occurring events and were attended by the groom and his family, trying to explain to them what had just happened.
"That boy is disrespectful! What have you done with him Gerald? You raised him to be a stupid coward!" yelled Mr Davis and continued, "Why am l not surprised? You took your wife's surname and abandoned your own. From that day Gerald I knew you had lost your way to your wife's charms!"
"Settle down brother, you are too drunk and furious."
"Gerald do not do this with me. Do not hide your true identity because you are in front of your wife! I know you are provoked by my senseless behavior. I can see it in your eyes. I just disturbed the wedding of your daughter and here we are trying to solve something that is all your fault. What have you done to this boy!"
"This boy," intervenes Mary, "is your flesh and blood that you and your wife failed to raise. Must I remind you of the things you made my children go through." A man shifted uncomfortably on his chair as though the truth was bothering him a little bit.
"They are not your children Mary. You took them from my very own arms," cried Mrs Davis introducing a new and untold secret.
"What are you talking about my love?" asked Mr Davis looking his wife right in the eye.
"Gerald stop this," begged Mary looking at her children sitting a distance away from her. Neither did they speak nor show any sounds of emotion.
"Should I tell them Mary?" she asks with no respect for her. She had not changed a bit after all these years.
"Speak woman!"
"She came to my home before we left for our trip and threatened to kill the both of us if I did not give her our beautiful children. She is not who she claims to be husband. I want my children back!"
No one spoke, just the hearts pounding heavily on everyone's chest. Mrs Davis looked over to see Gerald's reaction to the information. He took his left and lifeless hand and held his wife's hand tight as though he was comforting her. She was shattered to small uncompilable bits.
"Have you no shame my so-called mother?" began Carrie, "We were there when you swore never to tell your husband that you had abandoned us to aunt Mary. All our lives we watched you and your husband leave us in that attic to die and yet here you are accusing our parents of being bad in their duties. What is wrong with you?"
"Carrie I am your mother and not her! She is the bad person here."
"Why are you here then 'mother'? You found out about my brother's fortune or, that my father has made a name for himself? Did you run out of your never-ending trip's money? You will never be our parents. You're too selfish and unworthy of anyone's love and forgiveness. It's a simple thing mother, just apologize. Every scene that the both of you enter, you destroy. You just stopped my sister's wedding and all you think about is yourselves and the lies you have been constructing in your heads and sharing to us. I don't wish my child to know you people as his grandparents."
The cat is out of the bag. Unfortunately.
"What are you saying Carrie?" asked Gerald in astonishment.
"I'm pregnant!"
"Gerald my brother, you have failed me!"
"Stop sir! Stop proclaiming things that you have no knowledge of. I love Mary and Gerald and they have raised us to be the best versions of ourselves. Don't you dare sit there and judge us because of your failure as our parents!"
"Stop Carrie," pleaded Mary.
"Then come and live with us." Mrs Davis stands up from the decorated chairs and walks over to Carrie sitting on the other side of the small room filled with extra chairs. Her Loreal perfume followed her.
"What!" shouted Toby.
"I'm sure your uncle and aunt wouldn't mind your departure from their lives."
"Collins Davis let your wife be warned. I am not giving my children to you after all that you did to them."
"My brother I have the law on my side, anything my wife says is better than your Mary would ever say," he unashamedly stated reclaiming his lost pride.
"Where do you people live?" asked Toby still in shock.
"In the States. After your final examinations, you and Carrie will live with us and we'll take care of our grandchild."
Present day
"I have to Toby they are your parents. If it doesn't work out I will fight to take the both of you back. Don't lose hope Carrie."
"Mom they are going to kill my baby. My life is here with you," she sobbed on her aunt's lap unhappy with the decision made. They had to go.
"We have a day left mom to change their minds. I can give them money. Anything. Please don't let them do this to us!"
"It is decided. You are going to go and live with them as agreed. I suggest you fix your lives here and take whatever you want to leave with. Don't waste the little time God has given you. Toby go and tell her."
