Chapter 18
The air was mild making the world look bitter and unpleasant again. It was baleful and highlighted that something big was about to happen. The steps we took towards the door facing a small river just ahead sounded louder than our heavily pounding hearts. There was laughter. It's was a complete family. It petrified Olivia's conscious. She might have to walk into a full family where she would not fit in.
Here it goes
{Knock}
''Go and take your father's beer. Willy!'' shouted a thin and loud voice very familiar to Olivia's ears.
The door creaked open to a face just like Olivia's. She was startled and stood rigid watching the strangers with a strange eye.
''Can I help you,'' an astounded voice said and a tear fell.
''Mama! There is a couple at the door. She's crying,'' the voice called out again this time to a name. To a mother. To a family.
The door produced a louder prolonged grating to a frustrated hand.
''Mom?''
''Olivia? What are you doing here?'' she asked after a series of brief seconds to collect her normal breathing rate. It was a dreadful surprise for the both of them. To the daughter, a mother fled. To the mother, a daughter reappeared like a nightmare.
''I came home,'' Olivia replied hoping and praying that she had finally found home.
''Home? Y..youdon'tbelonghere!'' Her mother was slurring from the intake of alcohol. They were convinced by the filthy smell diffusing from the air within that they had been consuming alcohol.
''She's my little sister?'' interrupted the girl who was about to break into tears.
A voice roared and walls of the living hell tottered. Its female hostages kept silent. He clamored made up words and puffed out the cheap cigarette.
''Who has a sister?'' asked the man opening the door wider, appearing like Goliath in the valley of Elah. Is he that wasted or he does not know?
''Nothing sweetheart get in the house i'm gonna go and get your drink.''
''Shut up woman. Don't patronize me. Women should respect! Respect!'' he shouts spitting fresh and reeking drops of saliva. It was as if he wanted us to smell his rotting liver. The girl looked lost. She did seem used to his behavior. But she could not handle the mixed emotions. She had a sister.
''Ah we have guests, women let them enter!'' he ordered harshly forcibly pulling their arms to the sides of the corridor creating a pathway in between.
''He is a man,'' pulls Toby in ''he shall sit with me. Bring him a beer too. Where is the beer? Can women ever be so incompetent as mine? It's a stupid glass bottle!'' he roared once more resounding in an short-term echo in the room.
Toby was pissed at this self-centered man. He treated women like worthless pieces of shit when he was being one. Then he got angry with himself for having this bandage on his hands. What was he going to do next? He had no clue. But he was sure that he needed to get these women out of here before the lion roars again to destroy every bit of human flesh within a distance from its presence.
''Sit here young man,'' he offers Toby a chair from the sitting room that was lit up by four candles. There was no electricity and electrical appliances of any sort. There were chairs instead of couches. Twenty litre buckets were decorating the room without any furniture. What happened to the furniture? Willy came by to wash Toby's feet and hands so she could bring out the food. Toby refused politely and glanced around searching for Olivia.
''Is she your wife?'' asked the drunk man one foot away from him. He could taste his bitter breath.
''I am not married. She is your-''
''Your beer is here my love,'' interrupted Benita rushing in the room with Olivia behind her.
''We should go Toby,'' she says with tears flowing down her cheeks like a river.
''We cannot,'' he replied taking the beer in his hand from Benita. We simply cannot.
Glasses broke into smaller shards on the floor. A man went tumbling down like a giant he was. Bawling fled from the women. A husband and father was lost. Blood dressed the granite floors like rich paint. His urine diluted the substance. Wailing took over the mother's body.
''What have you done!'' she sobbed holding her husband's head to her feet and applying pressure to the injury.
''Do not be afraid Willy he is alive,'' he went to Willy who stood puzzled like a statue next to Olivia.
''Mother we need to go!'' shouted Olivia urgently responding to the circumstance. It was an escape.
''I will not leave him here,'' she cried. She looked at the man who had owned her heart for all these years bleed to his death.
''Mom you want to stay here with this man despite everything he has done to you? I know the truth. Please let's go,'' pleaded Olivia holding her mother's hand to pull her up to her feet.
''You're my sister?'' questioned Willy also weeping in tears. Toby was worried that the man would wake up any minute now. He had not hit him with much effort.
''Yes!'' she responded joyfully.
''No she's not!'' shouted Benita fighting off her daughter's hand.
''I am Willy,'' she said her name. She could finally say her name.
''Willy don't listen to these people. Get away from them!'' called out Benita crying and applying pressure to the wound.
''Toby take her to the car. We need to leave,'' she instructed noticing her father's leg twitch. He was soon to wake up.
''Mom we have no time. Stop this drama please let's go,'' she begged.
''You don't belong here witch. You're not my daughter. You made him hate me. Go away!''
''Mom its neither your fault nor mine that made him do what he did. We cannot justify this man's actions. I know what he did to you and I am sorry for what happened. Don't punish yourself for his actions. Liberty is there to love you.''
''You think I want love. I want my husband back. He took me back with his car because he wanted me here.'' Benita said all these things trying to reassert herself of her husband's love for her.
''He beat up an innocent dog trying to get you mom. Can't you see he is not right for you, for us as a family,'' responded Olivia after realizing in that moment that they were mistaken. It had been her father who had abducted her mother and hurt the dog not Liberty.
Olivia's father resurrected in great force and anger, pushing Benita away from him. His eyes were ready to kill.
''WHO ARE YOU?'' questioned the man terrifying both women.
''I'm nobody,'' replied Olivia brushing off her tears.
''She is your daughter husband.''
''Benita!'' slaps her ''I told you to get rid of her a long time ago. Why do you disrespect my words of command!'' he spoke words worthy to be said by a man he was not. Olivia feared for her life. He picked up the remaining beer bottle piece that Toby left on the table still dropping his blood.
''I will do it myself.''
''Mom get out of here!'' shouted Olivia facing her father like a brave warrior. Her mother picked herself up from the floor and ran outside.
''You think you can outsmart me you little witch. I've waited all my life to send you away for good!''
Her father rotated around the table in the center of the dining-room to catch Olivia on the other side. She looked him right in the eyes and lost focus on what she walked on. Her father roared and hit the table with his hand making Olivia quiver in fear. He father ran after her around the table. Unfortunately she did likewise and slid onto the man's pool of blood and he caught up to her. He choked her watching her lose her breath one after the other. He raised his weapon in attempt to gain more energy to cut her throat open.
Toby knocked him out with the other beer bottle Olivia's father ought to drink. He fell on Olivia's body with the weapon in his hand. Toby pushed him away from her and took Olivia's hand and pulled her to her feet. She had never been so happy to see anyone before. She had been relieved from the hands of death. She had a horrible smell of blood, urine and bits of alcohol. They both ran to the car and drove off leaving the man in his house with Olivia's small family in the backseat still in shock because of the events of the day.
