Chapter 14
I could not stop looking at her. She was simply beautiful. I wanted to tell her that everything was going to be alright but I could not because I'm a dumb-ass. She has been watching Rosalie, Michelle, Kelly, Wendy and Stephanie leave my house more than twice now. I even mocked her for not knowing how to use the remote. I could have been more considerate about that. I was comforted by the memory of her touching me. Did that mean anything to her?
She was not looking at me or paying attention to any words I said in attempt of pleasing both the ladies in my car. Jayden was trying so hard to make Olivia smile by reading her the book and it helped. I looked like an idiot when I was playing music. Carrie in the front seat turned it off and waited for Jayden to read the magical words by Shakespeare.
I had no idea what he was saying because I was watching Olivia lean on the window, staring at the emptiness of the night. Carrie and Jayden were getting along quite well. I was proud of his little kind gestures to try and make her smile. He was Olivia's friend so I assumed he was a good guy. Honestly speaking the guy was attractive not like me obviously but he was appealing.
We drove out east to a location I never heard about before. Carrie and I were a bit unsettled for we have never been around such a neighborhood. Jayden and Olivia were fine. By fine I mean relaxed but anxious about Liberty. They were used to such places. I hated how I was so helpless. I wanted to take away the pain she clearly felt.
Truthfully speaking she made my life more and more stupid and weird by the day. Every time Olivia earned her wages she did not treat herself to anything nice. She watched me transfer it to her school's fees account and walked away from my presence. She is never interested in having a conversation with me. No I'm lying, I'm never around. I'm either in my room hooking up with a bunch of people or listening to music, having interviews and shooting videos for my YouTube channel. 1.3 million subscribers is kind of a big deal.
''We're here!'' I exclaimed and watched Olivia leave the car in such a haste. I left the car keys with Carrie just in case anything happens.
''Jayden stay here with Carrie. We'll be right back,'' I said leaving the car and ran after Olivia. She was walking really fast. I was getting the vibe that she was avoiding me.
''Love it's not safe for you to walk alone in the streets like that. Wait up!'' I called and she stopped for me to catch up to her.
I reached for her hand,
''Don't touch me!'' she shouted angrily. Her eyes were wide open and her hair dancing to the soft wind. Perfect view on a terrible moment. Her anger was not aroused by me, that I was sure of. Something else was bothering her.
''Liv?'' I reached for her shoulders this time and was declined of the honor. She shrugged away uncomfortably. This time it was my fault.
''You know what I get it,'' she yelled in the middle of the street. People passing by were casting pitiless looks. She did not care. I did. She was on the verge of crying. Dramatic but at least honest. I was used to such charades especially with girls begging to get me back. Again, wrong reminisce at the wrong time.
''What do you get?'' I asked sweetly and concernedly. A man passed by us this time casting his disgusting and perverted eyes on her body. I wanted to kill him but focused on Olivia.
''You are you! Your are complete and all. That frustrates the heck out of me!'' she shouted hurtfully ''a..an..and you are nice, you are so nice and l..I'm a mess and m..my mom, she doesn't want me. She doesn't want me!'' she confessed in paid. Tears ran down her cheeks and her hands clenched together in front of her. She was in pain. In real actual pain. Something I have not seen expressed in a long time. Her body shivered aggressively up until she could not breathe. At first it was natural and then it got serious.
''What if we walk into Liberty's house and she's there loving him. Don't touch me Toby!'' she yelled again this time most anxious than the last. It was a panic attack.
''Hey, hey, hey look at me,'' I gently ordered. She was not paying attention to me. Maybe my voice was adding on to the panicking. I don't know. Luckily we were now alone in the streets.
''They're in there, she's happy wit..without me,'' she cried turning around anxiously. She was now mad at herself for having this panic attack. Why?!
''Love look at me,'' she stopped pacing around anxiously but continued tapping her hand on her hip like a child reciting numbers to the teacher. She looked at me still blabbering and cursing her thoughts. Her eyes begged for comfort. I wanted to be there for her. I genuinely wanted to make her feel better but did not know how to. She was a girl I had no clue how to handle.
''Talk to me. Talk about me okay.'' I said avoiding touching her and she started. I think I had cracked the code. She instantly stopped blabbering and shifted her focus to me.
''You..you're really annoyingly handsome, I mean look at you!'' she yelled again but this time decreasing the level of her voice. It was working.
''Keep going.'' She was wiping her tears in between her speech that she had not practiced.
''You..you're so clean. I walked into your room the...the other d..dd.day and,'' she stops talking as her guilty conscience kicks in. She is shivering and out of breaths.
''And?'' I knew exactly what she was talking about. It was cute watching her innocence interject.
''You were naked! You were NAKED!''
''Naked?'' I said chuckling. She looked adorable trying to calm herself down. She was slowly coming back to her senses.
''Y..yeesss! And I tried to run away before you saw me but my feet couldn't move.'' She let her tears fall massively and fell on her feet surrendering to defeat. I knelt before her difficulty resisting to touch her face and wipe away the tears.
''I am sorry. The girl told me she was going to break up with you and I swear that wasn't my intention,'' she said again calmingly taking long breathes.
Screw this!
I touched her soft cheeks and gently wiped off her tears.
''It's okay. Well that worked!'' I rejoiced in triumph ''Look love nothing that is going to happen in there will push me away from you. I'm here to support you okay.''
She replied in trusting nods. She was adorable. I helped her up and we went to the house at the end of the tarred road. It was in ruins. There were no lights, no proper sanitation and there was a pit full of filth so close to the house that fed a business of flies. I could not understand and believe that people lived in such homes. It was pathetic and disheartening at the same time. I was so angry to watch things like this happen to someone else. It was these sites that mad Toby hate himself even more. He was a good giver to society. Such places made him question more about the country and the world we live in generally. Money is the root of all evil.
At the front door laid a half-beaten to death dog. It had blood all over its ears and had a large wound oozing blood on its front leg. It could not move from its position as we knocked at the door. I searched for other wounds using my phone's touch in order to dress them up with my emergency $200 handkerchief. Olivia smiled calmly and waited for a response. No one answered.
We knocked for over five minutes until a neighbor responded. The houses were three feet apart from either the front of the house or both sides either left or right. The young lady had been tending to the fire where she was cooking. There was no electricity around here.
''May I help you?'' she asked politely moving closer to the damaged and rusty fence separating both houses. Olivia responded with a soft tone.
''Sorry to disturb you. We are looking for a man and woman who live here. She's short and has a strong figure and the man is tall and-''
The lady spoke lazily in a disrespectful and careless manner and interrupted saying,
''Oh I have seen her my dear but she is not here. The man, I have not seen.'' She vaguely answered whilst on the other hand she pulled her dirty and short skirt down showing how uncomfortable she was in front of the man. At first she had attempted to flirt with me which I unregrettably shut down. I was not in the mood.
''What do you mean?'' asked Olivia moving closer to the lady. Her tired and sulky face indicated her discomfort of saying it out loud.
Olivia moved closer to the fence and gave the woman her full attention. She whispered,
''There is a man who came here a few hours ago in search of the woman. I have never seen him around here before. He kicked that dog mercilessly and cut it many times demanding the woman to open the door. He beat the door so hard that everyone near looked scandalously at the man.'' Stops and breathes heavily ''As you can see it is not a man's town so no one could stop him. She opened the door and he pulled her out by her hair to his car. They left!''
Olivia quickly noticed that this was not any ordinary town, it was where women lived. A man around here was only present to be served. What she did not understand is why they chose to live here.
''Did you see the car?'' asked Olivia retreating from her bending position. Her facial expression was dead. She was dead inside and could not believe what she had just heard.
''It was a Mazda,'' she said out loud allowing me to hear this time.
''A Mazda? What kind of Mazda?'' I asked recalling the car I saw Liberty get into after I had followed him.
''I'm sorry but I could not clearly see what kind of Mazda it was but I'm sure it was a Mazda. I'm sorry I need to get back to my pots before the night deepens.''
We both walked silently back to the car unsure of what to do next. Olivia looked disappointed and really exhausted. This was the only lead she had left and she was hopeless about the next move. We drove back home with a little gladness. Carrie in a better mood making both Olivia and I happy she had found some sort of amusement. We dropped off Jayden at the Pick'N'Pay bus stop.
I could not get Olivia out of mind. She did not deserve such pain. It was exactly 0020hrs when the house was about to completely shut the normal security system down to activate the police controlled security system that would detect any motion and alarm the police. He jumped out of his bed and went out his room walking straight to Olivia's room. He did not knock and silently walked to her her bed. He could feel his usual self shift to Olivia's Toby mode. Shit she is awake.
Olivia's POV
''I'm sorry.''
''You should be,'' I teased.
''I am,'' he said tapping his foot on the floor and playing with his fingers like a child caught stealing candy at night.
''What's up?'' I asked sitting up on the bed and moved away creating space for him to seat. It was strange for him to show up out of the blue. I could not help but laugh at him nervousness. He was completely turning himself to an idiot. I loved how I could mess around with his mind.
''I can't sleep. Are you alright?'' asked Toby controlling himself. He wanted to kiss her so bad. She was so beautiful even though her hair made her look like a crazy person.
''I'm okay. If you ask because I'm awake, don't worry I have insomnia so don't freak out.''
Silence.
''I think I'm falling in love with you,'' he confessed. WTF did I just do!
''What?'' I asked barely breathing. I mean why would I be able to breathe when a handsome guy is saying things I can barely believe. And shit I'm cold. It was cold because I could not turn on the AC. He was shirtless revealing an impressive and strong six pack. Maybe all this was happening because I told him I saw him naked. Could that have implied something else? My inexperience in modernized dating sure made my life a living hell.
''I think I'm falling in love with you. I can't sleep, I can't breathe when I'm around you and it's freaking cold in here. May I get in?'' he asked and got in before I could even say a thing. He continued without interruption. I had nothing to say.
''You don't need to say anything right now but at least you know how I feel and I'm going to sleep here tonight.''
I laughed and dug myself deeper into the warm blankets far away from his touch and waited for a miracle. It was not as romantic as one would picture it being but I was glad he made it less weird and pressuring. Maybe I would sleep tonight. I had never slept next to anyone before.
***Honestly i got nothing to say other than, that was a simple confession. It's something i have never heard anyone say it happened like that to them. How was your first "i love you" confession?***
