Chapter 1
Liam was a seven-year-old child who lived with his mum, Peggy, and his brother, Noel, who was 12. He and his brother always played together, but the child always got jealous when Noel played with other children.
One day, Liam was coming into the living room, where his mum was reading a magazine.
"Mum, have you seen Noel?", he asked.
"He went out to play with his friends", answered Peggy looking at him, and then continued with her reading.
"What?! No, no! Why does he always do that?!", he shouted angrily. He was next to a little table with a phone on it, and he threw it to the floor. His mum stood up immediately in order to pick it up. Liam left, Peggy put the telephone on its place and grabbed Liam by his hand. She turned him around and knelt in front of him while grabbing him by his shoulders.
"Liam, Liam, you calm down! Don't start with your tantrums and scenes!" she told him off.
"Noel prefers playing with his friends than with me! He doesn't like me!" he kept on shouting while throwing a tantrum.
"I told you to stop it!" Liam went quiet. "Let's calm down, ok?" she spoke in a softer tone. "You don't need to behave like that. Noel has the right to have his friends, just like you have yours."
"But I wanted to play with him," he said while starting to whimper and looking at the floor.
"Don't cry, sweetie" she told while hugging him. "Your brother will come back soon."
Later, her elder son came back with the t-shirt and shorts all dirty with mud and grass, and so the trainers.
"How did it go?"
"Great; we won", answered Noel.
"That's good!" she exclaimed cheerfully.
"And Liam? Did he throw a tantrum?"
"Like always. He's locked in his room." Noel sighed.
"I'm gonna see him", he said and headed towards the stairs.
"Wait." Noel stopped before putting his foot on the first step. "Go to wash your hands and change your clothes first."
"Oh, ok."
After washing up and going upstairs to change clothes, he went to his brother's bedroom. The door was closed, and he knocked.
"Liam." Inside, his brother was sitting up in the bed and leaning on its back.
"Go!", he shouted and threw a trainer against the door.
"Liam, don't be like that! I'm gonna enter." He opened the door and entered.
"Why did you leave? You're mean."
"I'm not mean. I went to play, just that."
"But I wanted to play with you, and you leave" he complained with his arms crossed while pouting and looking at the side. Noel sat in the bed.
"Well, I'm back, I'm here with you," he said trying to calm him down. "You're always making the same scenes," he complained.
"You don't love me." Liam bent his head
"I gotta have friends my age beside you," he tried to make him understand and then touched his shoulder. "That doesn't mean I don't love nor we gonna stop playing together.
"D'you play now?" he asked hopefully, looking at him again.
"You know I do." That's why I've come to your room too," he answered with a smile. Liam stood up delighted and took a monopoly thtat were on a table. They sit on the floor to play.
Time went by. Noel started to work as a waiter in a restaurant. When Liam turned 18,
Noel suggested that he work with him, and Liam accepted. Liam served the customers very well, and he also cheated on his girlfriend, Isabel, with the waitresses during the breaks. However, he did not get on with Natasha, one of the cookers, to whom he always bullied. Noel defended her when he saw them arguing, but he did not tell anything nor to the owner nor to the manageress, to whom Liam respected. On the other hand, some waiters and waitresses did tell something when they found out about, and both Nigel and his daughter, May, a 26-year-old girl, penalised Liam.
One day, Noel had the day off, but Liam did not and he fell asleep. Peggy went upstairs toward his son's bedroom. She entered.
"Wake up." She approached in order to touch him and to move him a bit, which made him wake up.
"Not today, I wanna keep on sleepin'," he mumbled half asleep. He covered himself more, settled down, and closed his eyes again. Peggy uncovered him.
"Liam, stand up, you're gonna arrive later." He opened his eyes again, rolled over, stretched, and sat up.
"What time is it?"
"9:45. Get dressed and go downstairs to at least drink a coffee." She left the room. Liam got dressed and went downstairs to the dining room. He drank his coffee, said goodbye to his mum, and left with his brother in his car.
"Fuck, I wish I hadn't slept."
"Try this is the first and the last time. Why did you go to bed so late if you know Nigel and May are very strict?"
"I was watching a film, and it finished at 2. I didn't realise to turn off the telly earlier. D'you think they're gonna fire me?" he asked worriedly.
"Let's hope they won't, may it be just a penalisation or that they forgive you. Oh, and don't bully Natasha, please."
"Yeah, I will listen to you," he answered rolling his eyes. Noel parked, and Liam got out. "Thanks, see ya."
"Good luck." Noel drove off, and Liam entered the restaurant. He bumped into May, the manageress, as soon as he entered.
"So, you're here at last. It's 11:05, we start to work at 11 before customers arrive in case you don't remember," she demanded with her arms crossed and authority.
"I'm sorry, May, I fell asleep. I promise you it won't happen again."
"I hope. My dad is busy now, but he'll talk to you later. Now go top ut on your uniform, don't waste more time." Liam headed to a coat hanger, took the uniform, and went to the bathroom to change while muttering "fucking witch", and started to work along with his mates.
