Chapter 1
"What a beautiful day to twist someone's neck."
Sunghoon scoffed. "Don't blame me! Blame that annoying stalker girl for ruining everything!"
The sun was shining and the land was covered in green outside the train window. I had lost count of how many times we moved to a different place, a different country, a different city. Just when we were getting used to our new home, something always happened that led us to move once again.
I tore my eyes off the scenery and looked at the reason we were moving this time. "Did you really have to bite her to get the message across?"
Sunoo gasped beside me, raising his head from my shoulder. "You really bit her?!"
"No way! Did you feed on her?" Jungwon sat up in front of me, eyes round. "Please tell me you didn't drink directly."
"Ew!" Sunghoon grimaced immediately. "I have class, you know? Why would I feed directly when we agreed to never do that? Also, even if I ever feed directly, I would never in a million years choose someone like that sicko to drink. I just bit her to make her afraid, but she fainted."
I sighed. "Well, that made us end up here. You could have just contacted police, do it the human way-"
"Hey!" Sunghoon jumped up, bursting with emotions. "Nothing was getting past her ears and I started holding a grudge because she kept touching me and sending me photoshopped wedding photos! I know I'm irresistible, like look at me, but isn't that too much? She kept begging me to 'eat her' so I was like, you know what? Fine! I'll rip her skin and eat-"
"Okay okay!" I quickly stood up and held his shoulders to make him sit down. "I'm sorry, okay? You were right. Just please don't go into details."
"You lost me at 'irresistible'," Sunoo deadpanned, throwing one leg over the other before laying his head on my shoulder again when I sat down.
"I was lost at wedding pictures," Jungwon giggled. "Amazing how she photoshopped such pictures."
"It was traumatizing," Sunghoon said, rubbing his arms before crossing them. "Ah, beauty is a sin. This face has broken so many maidens' hearts."
"Shut up," I hissed. "Hide your fangs after we arrive, got it? No more fooling around."
"Uh, my fangs were naturally long when I was born," he sassed, raising an eyebrow.
I groaned, rubbing my temples. "Even if sunlight doesn't kill me, stress might."
"Please don't die on us, Evie," Sunoo murmured as if he was pouting, making me chuckle. I could not die unless I really wanted to. Even then, I would have to suffer immense pain for a prolonged period of time until I finally passed.
Vampires like us were not many. Until now, I had met only a handful of others apart from the ones who had gone insane, losing their reasoning abilities. Those were finished off in silence and so, people were barely aware of our existence. Those who had their minds intact were craftier than politicians so fortunately, we could still blend in with humans. When extreme cases such as being exposed like Sunghoon happened, we would move to a different place and live a new life. Luckily, this time, only one person happened to see him, so we did not have to move far.
We were just like humans. Unlike some myths or rumors flying around, sunlight did not affect us, garlics were simply disgusting, and wooden crosses could not pierce our hard bodies. Of course, we were stronger and faster than humans. Still, we had to consume blood to stay sane and have the power to move around. Other food were tasteless and we could not digest them well. But these three had their favorites. Sunghoon had coffee, Sunoo had mint chocolate and Jungwon had curry.
We also needed a few hours of sleep a day. A rest needed to preserve our bodies. That was why we needed a comfortable house.
"Oh, why does this place stink?" Jungwon exclaimed as soon as we entered our new house. "I thought Evie rented a better house than before."
"I thought I heard some sound coming from Evie's way," Sunghoon said and covered his nose with a teasing smile.
I slapped his shoulder, earning laughters from the three. "I swear you're still a child even after living many years."
We brought our luggages inside and looked around the two-story house. It was cozy and had a modern feel. Although it was smaller than our previous home, it was quite welcoming. Blood and meat prices were continuing to rise significantly, and combined with the crazy rent prices, we had to hold good jobs.
"Guys, but don't you think it was unexpected that Hoon decided to be a teacher along with us, and they even had a vacancy?" Jungwon asked while we were having our dinner, drinking blood. "He has no qualification whatsoever. Do you think he can do it? Evie?"
"Excuse me?" Sunghoon exclaimed, offended.
I laughed. "They hired him, so it should be fine as long as he doesn't zone out while teaching."
"Or he might ramble about his life stories and suddenly the bell rings," Jungwon laughed.
Sunghoon shook his head. "Hey. I'll have you know that I will become the most popular teacher among the students. Especially girls."
Sunoo gasped out loud while Jungwon screamed, "Wee woo wee woo, that's the sound of the popo-"
"Not like that, you idiots," he yelled, shoving Sunoo who was sitting next to him. "My face card never declines. No matter young or old, anyone can see this beauty. And kids will see me as a prince for real."
I chuckled and continued drinking, the metallic taste that I had gotten used to soothing my thirst. "We will all be busy getting used to new people."
"I, for one, am excited to be a kindergarten teacher!" Sunoo cheered, smiling widely.
Jungwon sighed. "I'm not... This might be my first time taking care of children. What if I accidentally squish them while carrying them?"
I snorted. "Oh gosh. Apart from a baby babysitting other babies-"
"He's not a baby," Sunoo interrupted.
"He's a baby cat," Sunghoon retorted.
"-it's important to be very focused and control your power. Or just don't touch the children," I said, ignoring the two.
Silence hung over us as we all drowned in our thoughts.
"What have we actually gotten ourselves into...?"
