Babysitting Richard Grayson (Part Three)
-thank you to @DCr3ativ3Abomination for the request, and to all the others who wanted a part three. Leave requests in the comments or DM me-
It was Artemis' fault, kind of. She was uncomfortable watching Richard at night, sure, but she could've tapped out with ANYONE who wasn't Wally. Wally was still burnt out from doing nightshift the previous night; he was hardly in Dick's room for five minutes before falling asleep on the foot of the bed.
So, Basically, No one was watching the kid they WERE ORDERED TO PROTECT. Sure, it didn't seem like a big deal, at first...
There was a storm raging outside, with flashes of lighting and crashing of thunder. It was hard to sleep for everyone except Artemis and Dick; Gotham kids were used to rain like this. To them, it was almost soothing, like white noise.
There was a deafening smashing sound from upstairs, jerking the youths from their slumber. This was followed by a shreik, the sound of someone falling over, and Wally calling for back up.
If the kid hadn't contorted slightly in his sleep, persumable to be closer to Kid Flash, then the brick would've him him square in the temple, fracturing his skull (at least).
They set up a mind link immediately. They didn't realize they'd aded Robin, and Dick couldn't exactly do anything besides try to silence his mind. In costume or not, his mind would sound the same. Kaldur ordered M'gann to take Dick into a side room and lock the door while the others went out and searched for the culprit.
A brick through the window, it seemed like a basic move; undoubtedly a small time criminal trying to collect the bounty. So, they seperated.
-
Wally: I'm going left.
Conner: You mean that you're going east.
Wally: LEFT.
Kaldur: If you see ANYTHING, let us know immidiately. Ms. Martian?
M'gann: The door is locked.
Dick:.............
Artemis: I think I see -FUCK!
Conner: What?
Wally: ARTEMIS?
Kaldur: Where are you.
Artemis: The garden, FUCKING HURRY!
-
Dick sat crosslegged in a side-room, more like a closet, really, and tried to stay quiet. M'gann was trying not to look scared, but he could hear her yelling over the mindlink. No one could manage to tell her what was happening.
"It's okay, you're safe." She insisted quietly, as sounds roared throught the wall.
"I know." He tried not to make a sound over the link.
"You're okay, I just NEED to help the team with this. Okay?" He nodded, and M'gann squeezed his shoulder and hurried out the door. "Lock it."
He didn't, watching her leave.
-
M'gann: Are you okay? I'm coming!
Wally: NO! Don't come down!
Conner: There are more that we thought, stay up there with the kid!
M'gann: Why? What's happening?
-
The mindlink got a little scratchy, as M'gann started started using her telekinesis, but from what Dick could hear, it was mostly just cursing and grunts of pain.
He couldn't just wait this out. He unlocked the door and slipped out. He went full bat, creeping around windows and doorways. The clock, finally, He slid under it, and stumbled down the stairs. His fumbled around for his gear.
Out in the lawn, things were not going well.
"We're FUCKED." Artemis grunted. "There are too fucking many!"
She was right. It wasn't some small time crook, these guys were either bounty hunters, or REALLY HATED Bruce Wayne on a personal level. Kaldur was holding back three or four on his own. It was raining hard, and the garden was slicked with mud, sending Wally slipping out of control everytime he tried to move.
Artemis could barely see for the rain her eyes. She blindly fired a few times, but couldn't see where she hit. For the most part, she hid under a stone bench and Tried to devise a plan.
M'gann couldn't stop the fight, there were so many people, and it was really hard to see who was who.
-
M'gann: Sorry, Conner! Wrong-
Kaldur: regroup as soon as possible! Ms. Martian, can you call the bioship?
M'gann: I think so!
Kaldur: Kid Flash, Artemis, if you can, get Richard Grayson on the bioship and get him away.
Dick:Hold on, Let me handle this!
-
There were a chorus of 'WHAT?'s, as a tiny black figure shot across the flooded, muddy lawn.
"ROB?" Wally shouted into the storm.
Several short explosions rang across the lawn. The accumulated rain water bursting under their feet as a chain of smoke bombs and flashbangs went off.
The tiny figure of Robin was darting through the crowds of attckers, kicking the back's of knees and taking down anyone he could.
The short second of calm let Kaldur switch from defence to offence, he utilized the deep stormwater in the lawn. Conner and M'gann made sure the ones who were down, stayed down.
-
Artemis: KF, LET'S GO!
Wally: -NO!
Artemis: Come on, we gotta get the Grayson kid!
Wally: I think he's safer where he is!
Kaldur: Kid Flash, help Artemis!
Wally: We can't-
Kaldur: Kid, that's an order.
-
Wally grabbed Artemis' arm and the two staggered through the Gotham storm, which was basically a hurricane. He took her the long way back to the door.
-
Dick: SHOOT! I gotta go! Bats is calling!
Conner: Wait-
Dick: It's urgent, I CAN'T! M'gann, can you get these two?
M'gann: I think...
Dick: Cops are on-route, make sure they don't get away.
-
And with that, Robin vanished into the treeline.
Artemis and Wally stumbled into the foyer, dripping with mud and rain. The storm had knocked out the lights. Artemis slipped blindly across the tiles; they HAD to get to the kid before anything else happened.
"Hurry! What room did M'gann Hide him in?"
"I DON'T KNOW." The redhead tore off his rain speckled goggles. He had to stall for a few minutes "I'll start upstairs, you start down!"
"No, I'll start upstairs! I think I saw M'gann put him up there."
Wally tried to argue, but he remembered that the batcave enterence was downstairs. "Okay, Sure!"
They seperated. Wally pretended to look for a minute or so, expecting for Dick to break out of the batcave, soaking wet. What he didn't expect was:
"KF! I Found Him!"
Confused, He sprinted up the stairs, tripping over his feet. "WHERE?"
"In here!"
He followed her voice to Bruce's room, Dick had only had enough time to pull on one of his father's shirts. He must have barely gotten out of the Robin costume before Artemis kicked the door open.
"Dude- hey, are you okay?"
Dick was clearly biting his tongue, and thrusting his thumb into his abdomin to cause some discomfort. "...yeah." He croaked.
"Why are you all wet?" Artemis ordered.
Dick excersized his improv drama stills. He spun a believable tale of how he heard suspicious noises near his hiding spot, crept out on the balcony, and crawled to Bruce's room.
Artemis shouted that he should've stayed in the other room, and helped Wally lock the door and guard him.
-
Artemis: M'gann, is it safe?
M'gann: We're taking out the last one. Robin says police are on the way.
-
Dick sat on the bed and clutched at the bottom of the teeshirt, pushing it down as far as he could. He sat next to Wally, sheepishly glancing at him.
Wally was totally teasing him for the later. But for now...
Wally grabbed a pillow and passed it to Dick. The boy clutched it over his lap, forcing a shy smile.
"You good?" Wally asked."
"Uh huh. You?"
"Yeah." They went quiet, staring down at the bed. "You're dad is gonna kill us for getting this on his bed."
"We'll clean it." Dick answered. "Also, he's not my dad..."
"He is." Wally replied.
Artemis looked up. "He is, though. He's super protective of you. He's come to pick you up directly from the classroom several times."
"Arty, Stop eavesdropping!" Wally exclaimed. "Any luck with the others?"
"The cops are nearly here." Artemis hated dealing with cops. "We're supposed to stay up her and watch him."
So, locked in Bruce Wayne's bedroom, the three of them waited. Exhaustion took over them. The white noise of the storm cradling Dick and Artemis into sleep, soaking wet and muddy, the later in costume. Wally checked they were okay, and gave into sleep too.
Eventually, the team did find them, made sure they were cleaned up and uninjured, and moved them into the livingroom. Safety in numbers. Lit by flashlights, they let each other sleep and waited out the stormy night.
