So, Wally meets Dick right? But instead of being excited like everyone expects, he's annoyed.

He cant understand why this child is so happy and it's annoying him because he's used to logical reasoning.

So he spends all this time with Dick, secretly hating him because he cant figure out why he's so darn happy all the time

And then comes the anniversary of Dick's family's death, and Wally's more annoyed than ever.

So when Dick goes up to him to try and get his mind off of it, Wally's had enough and tells him to go away

Which leads Dick to thinking about all the other people who had shut him out

Heck, the only friend he'd ever known was an elephant

Everyone else thought of him as a worthless monster

And the only people who really did care

were dead

So he walked up to Wally and tugged on his shirt

 "What!?" Wally had had enough of people bugging him, his parents, the school bullies, why didn't anyone understand?

Dick looks him straight in the eye and asks "Why?"

The one word Waly dreaded more than anything

He had heard this word come out of the child's mouth so often

"Why is the sky blue?" "Why do old people have hair in their ears?" "Why are moths attracted to light?"

And for every single one of them

He received a straight answer

Thats why he liked Wally

Wally knew the science behind everything

And thats why Wally turned around to hear him out

And thats when he noticed two things

One was that Dick wasnt wearing his mask, and that was the first time he had seen him without it

And two was that this annoyingly happy child who was never seen without a grin, had the saddest eyes Wally had ever seen

They were full of loneliness and sorrow like he had been alone all his life and had no reason to exist

And thats the worst pain you can feel

The pain of knowing that your existance has no purpose because you are worthless and no one loves you

Wally understood that pain more than anyone

So why would such a happy child understand his pain?

It had never crossed Wally's mind that a happy child like Dick could understand what he was going through

"Why what?"

"I-I dont have any wounds... but it hurts..."

"Why wont the pain go away?"

"I-I dont understand..."

"Why does it hurt so much?"

"Why does everyone hate me?"

"Please tell me why."

"I dont understand..."

"Im not bleeding..."

"So..."

"So why does it hurt?"

Wally had never expected that he would miss that annoying smile... until it had disappeared completely.
