Oneshot 18: Family Knows First

A/N: Oh my goodness, guys! Thanks so much for helping this book to reach over 2K reads! I am beyond surprised and grateful and thankful for all the support in this book so far! This is the first of my books to hit that many reads. Anyway, my inspiration has started to dry up a little over the last many months, as things have changed for me. I'll definitely try to be on more, now that my schedule at work seems pretty regular, and I'm hoping that will spark some more creativity. Also, enjoy this next oneshot!

This oneshot is dedicated in loving honor, to the incredible heroine herself, Pam L., who shipped Supermartian without even knowing what it was, or how two people were definitely it, both mentally and physically. Who knew they were meant to be together, from the start, and had a gut feeling about it. Who fought a disease and won wholeheartedly and loved compassionately. May she always be remembered as a Super, because she is, and was, and always will be.

Superboy frowned as he looked at Kara Kent, his 'adopted' cousin. He couldn't even see the resemblance between the great Man of Steel and this blonde female who carried his name with her. He almost expected to see her give him the same distance...the same hate and disgust for being a clone, that Superman had. For even carrying the family name. Yet, he was standing before her, being hugged in a strong Kryptonian way and she was smiling. He pulled away, and asked, "Do I not disgust you? I am a clone of Superman. No one can like a clone." Kara kept grinning goofily, tears in her eyes, as she responded, "What? No way. You're a member of the family, Superboy... No matter where you came from or how you got here. I lost all my family except Kal-El. For many years, he was the only member of my race left...of our race left, that I knew of. Then you were found in that horrible Cadmus, keeping you there and away from us and the real world. When you were found by the Team, you were meant to be found. And you are wanted and loved."

"Superman hates me.", he grunted, sitting down. "Well, he can be hated by us for that. If a hero like he is cannot accept someone of his own into the family, then he has no place to say it and has no excuse for that kind of disloyalty and acceptance to his bloodline.", Kara told him. "You deserve to be loved, and I want to give you that love he will have to learn to give, and deal with, in his stubbornly strong mind." After a few minutes of silence between the two Kryptonians, Superboy asked, confused, "Why are you here? Why are you treating me different? I am hated. The Team are my only friends." Kara replied kindly and openly, not hiding any secrets from him at all, "I was told from Batman that you don't know very much about our home planet, Krypton. And he suggested that I tell you a little bit about it, so you will know some of the history from it, that wasn't taught to you." Kara then began to explain to him what Krypton was like. How it was ahead of the world in all sorts of information and technology. How she was related to Superman, only because her father and his father, were brothers. How Superman aged to be older, and she stayed the same age when they were sent to Earth. And many other things as well, that took time to teach. By the end of it, Superboy was wide eyed and a bit surprised at everything she knew that he didn't. She even mentioned that in order to keep their X-ray vision from causing problems on Earth, that they both had a pair of glasses they wore that kept them from actually being able to see that way. Finally, the conversation landed on romances, of all subjects, and Kara noticed something about the young clone, that he seemed to be trying to hide. He kept looking over his shoulder, at someone in particular, but kept coming back to her.

She gazed at him, and said, "Have you ever been in love, Superboy?" "No.", he stated firmly, crossing his arms, refusing to give more information. She replied, "Maybe that shouldn't have been my first question. I probably should have asked, do you know what love is?" When he didn't answer, Kara explained, "Well, love is a very strong feeling that people and any kind of living thing get. It means you really like someone or something and find great pleasure in it. What's something that you find great pleasure in?" Superboy grunted, "I don't know...I guess football?" "Then that means you love football. You find great pleasure in playing it. It makes you feel better. People can get it too. It starts off real small, and gets bigger. It's called a 'crush', first.", Kara explained, in a way she hoped would make sense to the usually shy, silent boy with a raging short temper when he was maddened. She wanted to make sure he could understand it, even with his temper tantrums that seemed much like a child's.

Glancing beyond him, Kara noticed a redheaded Martian girl staring at Superboy dreamily, then quickly blushing, when she was noticed for her actions. "Actually, I think you do have someone crushing on you." She took the clone, and using his shoulder, guided him to look at the young M'gann M'orzz, who was looking at him with a starry gaze. Superboy stared back at M'gann, feeling something queerly in his chest. His heart was pounding even more strongly than usual, and he had a lightness in his soul, stirring him. "Go talk to her!", Kara teased him, laughing. Getting up from where they were seated and talking in the living room of the Cave, Superboy went over to M'gann, who was in the kitchen.

He did so silently, and stood beside her at the counter, speechless. Somehow, M'gann knew he was there, and didn't flinch upon seeing him towering over her. Then their eyes met, but only for a moment. When they realized it, they turned the opposite way, embarrassed. Superboy looked back and noticed that M'gann's cheeks were flushed bright pink. He didn't know what it meant, but he somehow felt more interested to ask. Although he wanted to speak, he couldn't. Not without making a fool of himself, and dishonoring his bloodline in the process, or so he thought. He placed a hand beside himself, on the counter, and was wide eyed when he felt her hand touch his. It wasn't hot, but it was nice....and it relaxed him a little. Finally, swallowing a strange feeling deep in his chest, he looked at her again. M'gann smiled at Superboy, and said, "I wasn't kidding when I told you earlier that I liked your t-shirt." Her clothes hadn't changed from the minute they met, face to face, for the first time in the Cave. He nodded once, as if approving that he noticed, and M'gann continued, "I don't think I introduced myself to you in the right way, when we met. I'm Miss Martian, but you can call me M'gann. Do you have a name?"

Superboy stood a little dumbfounded with what to say, then he mumbled, "I am Superboy." M'gann kept smiling, and asked, "Well, Superboy, do you want to help me make cookies for the others on the Team as a greeting present? My uncle loves from cookies here too, but they have creme in the center of them. I'm just making chocolate chip ones." Without a firm yes or no, he slowly began to help her by mixing the sticky, sweet batter that was heavily mixed with chocolate chips. As Kara stood in the living room, and watched them, she nodded and said to herself, "Yes, they are meant to be. I think they are, anyway. Superboy needs love and care, and I think M'gann might just help him to relax a little, and become more human, like Clark..." She shook her head, smiling, and left the room, knowing the truth.

A/N: Thank you all again so much for giving me time to get this out... These last several months have been a rollercoaster of feelings and drama. If you enjoyed, please consider reading some of my other works, and please consider voting on the chapter. I know the support of this story will mean greatly to the one who is the son of whom this oneshot is in honor of.
