Oneshot #10: One Archer's Family

A/N: So I kinda just was struck by the idea to do this, because I just realized I hadn't done an Artemis inspired one yet, and she's definitely one of my favorite females in the show. Anyway, I hope you all really enjoy. And sorry it is so long.

Artemis roughly pounded on the keys of her laptop, and growled in frustration. How was she supposed to do an assignment based on her past, and who her family was, when they all were criminals? As much as she wanted to, she couldn't lie to her teacher at Gotham Academy, and say she came from the perfect family setting. Irritated, she slammed the top of her laptop down, and curled up into a ball on the couch at the Cave.

For the first time, she realized how unusually quiet the Cave was, and it was both creepy and odd. Conner and M'gann had gone out with some friends from school, Kaldur was in Atlantis for a 'traditional Atlantian holiday', Robin was on patrol with Batman, and Wally... Well, never mind him. She didn't know where he was, or what he was doing, and frankly, she didn't care. Wally could go hit a wall, and she wouldn't care. Frowning with a sigh, she got up, and went into the kitchen, to make a cup of hot chocolate.

As she was getting the hot chocolate mix, she thought she heard something. Peering around, and checking her surroundings, as she had been taught, she didn't see anything. She went back to the chocolate mix, and discovered the bag of chocolate chips she was going to melt for an extra chocolaty flavor, had mysteriously disappeared from the table. Her alert mindset shifted into gear, and she looked around again. "Where the heck could that stupid bag of chocolate be?", she wondered. Going to the cabinet, she got the extra bag of them that M'gann had hidden away, for when the first bag was gone. Setting it on the table, she happened to peer down, and saw the first bag in the trash bin, empty. Artemis set to work, making her drink.

When she finally finished it about thirty minutes later, she came back into the living room, set the cup down, and reopened her laptop, where the assignment was how she had left it. Thinking, she tried to find a good beginning way to introduce her family, but failed horribly. Groaning, she pulled out her ponytail, and ran her hands through her long blonde hair. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Wally enter in from the sleeping quarters. He says, yawning, "Hey Artemis." The blonde thought about his words and tone, then said, "Hey Baywatch. Why are you here?" He mumbled, "I just thought I'd sleep here. It is Saturday after all." Artemis narrowed her eyes pointedly at him, then resumed her work. "What about you? Why are you here on a Saturday?", he asked, slumping over beside her. Artemis responded, "This is the best place to do my homework...speaking of which, can you leave?" He shifted closer, and put his head on her shoulder, and said, "I don't want to..." Artemis shoved him off, and he yelped, "Ouch! Rude." She frowned, "I have work to do, Baywatch. Now, leave." She turned her attention once more, then realized how close in Wally was, to her face. Artemis watched as his eyes glanced over the empty page, and the assignment given. He was so close, Artemis could smell his sleeping breath, and the particular hint of chocolate. For once, she didn't say anything about the chocolate she knew he stole, but instead was too busy staring as his lips moved, while he read, and his a'dork'able freckles that speckled over his cheeks. Then, he stood, and suggested, before walking off, "You know, you should write about how the Team, is like a family to you. Since, you know, your family is filled of criminals, and we are more like family, than they are." Once he had left, an idea sparked into Artemis, and furiously fast, she began to type out her report.

Monday morning came before she had known what had happened. She had spent the latter of the night proofreading and fixing a couple errors and things on her report, and now, here she was, about to turn it in. Artemis was all jitters and nerves. What if her teacher figured out that the people she had written about, were not related to her at all by blood? Coming into her English classroom, she found her seat near the back of the room, and sat down. In order to keep herself from shifting constantly, she had painted her fingernails a dark green, and was peeling off the paint to contain her jitters. When it came time to turn in her paper, she shakily walked up to the front, her legs feeling like jelly. She put it on the desk, and walked back stiffly.

All throughout class, she wondered what grade she had gotten on the report. Thousands of thoughts flooded her mind, and she was even too nervous to retort about the new book the class was going to read. Finally, English ended, and her teacher, Mr. Patterson, asked her to stay behind for a few minutes. "Oh crap,", she thought, "I must have done terrible, if he wants me to stick around." However, her thoughts about why he needed her to stay, were actually not something she had expected. When she was up at his desk, after class, he said, "Artemis, this is a beautifully written paper. I loved reading it. Each of the people in your family are all flawed in some way, but you did an excellent job of saying good things about them as well. I'm very pleased. Well done." He handed her back the paper, and she read the grade.  The number one hundred was written across the top of the paper in bright red. She smiled, and quickly left the classroom, after thanking her teacher.

Later, at the Cave, Artemis found herself surrounded by her fellow teammates, who were oddly all interested in reading what her paper had to say. "How did they all know?", she wondered. Smiling as they read it, commented, and joked about it, Artemis felt good. They all wanted her to read it aloud. Picking up her paper, she stepped into the living room, and cleared her throat. She began:

"MY FAMILY BY ARTEMIS CROCK

When I talk about my family, I am not referring to those who I am related by blood, but by something much stronger. A bond much stronger. As for them, the first one is Kal. He is the mother of the group, and is kind, compassionate, and a good leader. He is often sad about the loss of his best friend, but puts on a brave face. If I am having an off kind of day, he is always there to show me how to best fix it. He has given me much grace, especially when I am not the best person to deal with. The next person goes by the name Robin. He is a short, mysterious, quick witted person, but holds secrets deep within him. He is both relatively mature and immature, depending on if he is with his best friend, who I will discuss in further detail, in this report. Thirdly, is someone named Conner. Now Conner, has anger issues. He prefers to punch things and loses his temper easily. But those are not his only personality traits. When he is not angry, he is often kind, protective, and caring. He never backs down, and stands up for what is right. He has a good moral code, and defends himself and others with a kind, strong heart. Fourth is named Megan. She is sweet, loving, and has a heart of gold. Her baking skills, though not all that great, are improving. She has a servant's mindset, and is determined under all of the sweetness that she contains. Finally, there is one by the name of Wally. He is brave, selfless, gentle, a fighter, and the comedic relief in the darkness. He loves food, and cannot help being impulsive sometimes. He always wears a smile, and that smile is not ever washed away. He is constantly being immature a lot of the time, but when he is not, he is actually seen to be mature and knowledgeable. He is a man of science, not magic. He does not believe in the existence of magic, but that makes him who he is. And I like that about him. In conclusion, these people are not a part of my family by blood, but by the bond we share. I would have turned out so differently, if I had not stumbled onto them, when I did. They are my heroes. They are my friends. They are my family.

Thank you."

After she finished reading it, she got applause. Then, everyone dispersed...all except one ginger haired speedster, who was still seated. He wasn't vibrating or jittering, but seemed quiet. Artemis knew something was up, and walked over to him. She asked, "So what did you think, Wally? Did you like that I explained you prefer science over magic." He responded, "It was okay, but my favorite part was about how you said that you like me, because of that. Thank you." Wally places his hands in hers, then stands, and dashes out of the room, leaving Artemis in the room alone. When she opens her hand, she sees a small yellow bud with a single green leaf. She smiles, and thinks.

A/N: Thoughts? I hope you all really enjoyed reading this oneshot about Artemis! Would you want more about her in the future? Please don't forget to leave a like or comment if you enjoyed, and tell me your opinion, if I should do more of these oneshots based on Arty. Thanks everyone! Until my next update, stay whelmed!
