Chapter 68
When she was told that she would be attending school in Britain she didn't actually expect to like it as much as she did. Her life was so much easier now and nobody bothered her - to put it simply, she was on top of the world. Everyday was planned and all she had to do was follow the schedule. "Are you excited for summer break?" Toni asked, the three girls were seated in the large dining room eating their lunches. Summer break; she had completely forgot that existed.
The break was to begin at the beginning of July; July 1st to be exact, summer break lasted for one month and fourteen days. "I was thinking that we could all go down to Brighton this weekend, the tube isn't that far from school grounds." Toni said with a smile. Mar'i raised an eyebrow, her parents would never allow her to leave the premises without asking, let alone take a two hour train ride to a completely different town. "I don't know, I have - homework." she said with a nervous smile, she was never any good at making excuses.
Colette snorted at hearing her lame excuse. "Come on it will be fun, don't be such a bore." Toni said before stabbing a piece of broccoli with her fork and bitterly taking a bite out of it. No one enjoyed vegetables, not even Mar'i. She did know someone who liked vegetables - Damian was a vegetarian. Her eyes flickered down to stare at her plate, her fork pushing the stray vegetables around absentmindedly. "We're having steak for dinner, want to come over?" she remembered this day as clear as day.
"I rather stab Drake one hundred times before I allow myself to consume such food." Damian said bitterly.
"Do you not like steak, I could ask Dad to make you a burger if you would like." she truly was confused at that point in time.
"God no, I'm a vegetarian Grayson not some animal-killer like yourself."he retorted.
Now she couldn't help but smile when she thought back to that day, she had no idea what a vegetarian was until then. She missed having Damian as company, he wasn't horrible to have around all the time. " - have you been listening to a word I've been saying?" Toni asked regaining the girls attention. Mar'i was far too consumed in her own little memory to listen to what she had been saying. An embarrassed shade of red was flushed against her cheeks as she looked down.
Both of her friends giggled and rolled their eyes, Colette reaching out and playfully hitting her in the shoulder. "I don't know if it's an American thing but you take too many things seriously." Colette said with a kind smile. There was a roll of her eyes before the subject was quickly changed to something else, she would think about it though. Most of their spare time was spent either walking around school grounds or reading in the library.
Mar'i liked knowing everything, she read every book she could get her hands on. This was another one of those evenings, the three of them outside chatting - Mar'i paid no attention to the conversation, her book was getting far too interesting. "What are you reading?" she perched over his shoulder like a bird to try and get a glance at the pages.
"Yeah Damian, tell us." Melody chimed in from her spot on the floor.
An annoyed sigh escaped his lips as he closed the book and put it to the side. The two girls always used to pester him. It wasn't until hour later when she was leaving that he told her the title of said book. "The name of the book, it's 'The Woman in White'." he said from behind her as she was slipping her snow boots on. She remembered seeing the faint mischievousness flickering across his green eyes and that trademark know-it-all smirk gracing his lips. "What are you reading?" Colette asked peering over her shoulder.
Toni and Colette had long stopped chatting and instead took to watching the sun sink behind the treeline. However Mar'i seemed so captivated by a certain book - the girl hadn't put it down since she 'borrowed' it from the library earlier this afternoon. The key word was indeed 'borrowed', books weren't allowed to be taken out of the library but the young Grayson had a few tricks up her sleeve. Damian rubbed off on her too much, her father would be disappointed to hear that she had stole - acquired the book.
A small smile managed to wiggle it's way onto her face, she closed the book and hugged it to her chest. The sunset was absolutely marvellous this time of day - well night as it would be considered now. All of the colours mixing and fading, almost like one large ever-changing painting. "Yeah anything interesting? You've been obsessed with it ever since you stole it." Toni leaned back and smirked when she saw the offended look cross Mar'i's face.
"First of all I did not steal it, I simply acquired it and kept it with me. Second of all, this book is called 'The Woman in White', a - um a friend recommended it to me." she said with a fond smile.
"Hmm, shut the light off." Toni said humming in response before snapping at the girl to turn the light off.
Was it bad for her to be feeling this way? Her whole life revolved around tragedy, pain, and a girl who had to grow up too fast. Now that she was here she could actually be a kid, this place would be nice for Damian. He was wound too tight and acted more like an adult than her parents at times. As she turned off the lamp and laid back down she couldn't help but grin like an idiot. This was going to be one of the first rebellious acts that she's chosen to do on her own.
Damian and Melody dragging her off reluctantly to do something mildly illegal didn't count. Those two, she wondered how they were doing? She remembered clearly what Damian had said to her, "Don't ever talk to me again, I don't socialize with freaks." his words were a painful reminder of how different she really was from everyone. Although no one has picked on her, yet, his words still rang in her mind and they cut deep. Mar'i Grayson was different and in his words she was nothing more than a 'freak'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They had many of things to talk over after hearing what Dick had to say. For three day's the apartment was uncomfortably quiet, neither of them spoke. The two of them were trapped inside their own minds still mulling over every bit of information given to them. Brucely; their beloved pitbull seemed sadder than usual. The faithful dog was always sad when his owners were disagreeing.
Artemis didn't want to get involved in anything like this again. After everything that happened with her father and mother being killed - she was tired of it all. Her hand repeatedly ran down Brucely's back as she stared off into space. Wally was in class, he wasn't due back at their place for another half an hour. She had another article to work on but she was so unmotivated at the moment.
What Dick was asking from them - from one of them was a lot. The mission was dangerous and could get either one of them killed. She still thought Grayson was insane for choosing them to help out with this. Trained military operatives apparently weren't up to his 'standards'. Time passed swiftly and soon the clicking of the lock echoed in her ears. It took a moment but the door opened and Wally nearly tripped over his own feet getting inside.
Brucely hopped off of their bed and padded out of the room towards the front foyer. The fiery redhead smiled as he stepped into the living room only for his smile to fade into disappointment when he saw that she wasn't there. Nonetheless he found her in their bedroom on her laptop. He dropped his bag onto the floor next to his bedside table and took a seat on the bed. After three day's of silence he snapped finally when she didn't even look over at him.
It was heartbreaking with how distant they were towards each other. "I want to be the one to go Artemis, not you." he stated and within seconds her laptop was closed and placed on her bedside table.
"No - no, you don't get to make decisions for me!" she yelled, her eyes were set ablaze with anger.
She couldn't lose Wally, she almost lost him once and she wasn't going to lose him again. Her father almost killed him and if he succeeded Artemis would be lonely. She'd rather die than be left alone - loneliness was her worse fear. "Can't you see I'm trying to protect you? I'm not letting that ass drag you back into a mess you tried so hard to fucking escape!" they were both screaming now. All she did was shake her head and look down at the bedsheets.
If she lost him she wouldn't know what to do with herself. All her life she thought she was incapable to and to be loved, until she met him. That dorky, annoying, idiot, who made her go absolutely insane. Once they got past all the yelling she actually realized that she liked him. Which was why she wanted to do this, if she died on the mission then she wouldn't have to care anymore. Sure Wally would be upset but he would surely get over her death, right? "I can't lose you too." she whispered whilst drawing in a shaky breath.
Artemis Crock was hardly one to cry but this was becoming too much. Just from Dick asking them a simple question made them stop talking to one another for three days. When he saw her face, the tears falling freely, and the sheer dread on her face made him sick to his stomach. "If you die out there I'll be alone and I - I can't be all alone again." she choked back a sob and wiped her wet cheeks with the back of her hand.
"No - you don't get to do that to me Artemis, it's not fair." he looked away and tried to blink back the tears.
"I know I'm sorry, I just hate this so much but I trust you. I'll stay here and you go - I know you'll be great." she wiped her tears away only to feel him pull her forwards into a tight embrace.
They hadn't spoken, kissed, touched, or even looked at each other in three days. This was the end of that now and she couldn't be more happier and upset. "I love you so much, y'know that? I just want to keep you safe." he whispered into her hair before pressing a kiss to the side of her head. Artemis was sobbing now, she hadn't cried like this in a very long time. It felt good to let all of these emotions flow freely for once.
Her cries died down minutes after, she felt refreshed now - not to mention that she could think clearly now. "Can we not fight anymore now? I hate yelling at you." he said pulling away from the embrace. Artemis laughed and nodded wiping away the few remaining tears on her face. The two of them fighting reminded her of how her parents used to fight; the difference was that her father was brutal and her parents never made up for the fights, her and Wally always forgave one another and he wouldn't dare lay a hand on her.
The light in the room sparkled in her watery eyes to make it look like there was lightning flashing within those stormy grey irises. "I might need a kiss, or two, or three." she said with a cheeky smile, Wally was happy to oblige. It started off slow and he drew her in until his arms were around her waist and she was sitting in his lap. "Love you so much." he mouthed against her neck as he left wet kisses against her skin. She could only smile and run her hands through his hair.
If they were going to fight again it wasn't going to be now, now they were just going to love. They were going to love each other until the sky went dim and the sun burnt out because their love would last until the end of the world.
Everyday, every single day she would visit her in the hospital and bring her one single tulip. The colours were always different and each time she brought one it brightened the redheads day. Hospitals were stuffy and they reeked of chemicals, Pamela missed the smell of the earth and the grass between her toes. She's lost count of how many days she had been interned in this horrid hospital. It was like clockwork, Harley came at the exact same time every single day of the week.
A couple of nurse's always commented on Harley's faithfulness and devotion whenever they came to check on Pamela. "Hiya Pammy, are you excited?" Harley asked, she was grinning like an absolute idiot by now. At first she had no idea what Harley was clueing at, however that was at first. Then it hit her, she was finally being discharged from the hospital today. Soon she found herself smiling a little as well. The blonde skipped over and held out a red tulip to her.
Flowers were expensive, especially bouquets, so Harley got a single tulip from the flower shop on the way to the hospital. She reached out and gently pulled the flower from her hand and raised the petals to her nose to draw in its sweet smell. "It smells lovely, thank you Harls." she said planting a kiss to her girlfriend's cheek. Harley got all giddy and her face was flushed red, her chest was filled with millions of butterflies and she couldn't help but feel like a teenager again.
The two were soon sharing the bed; Harley squished herself in to sit right next to her. "How's Melody been?" Pamela asked, she hadn't heard a lot about the kid lately. The last thing Harley told her was that Melody's little friend moved to another country. She looked down at their intertwined hands and back up to Harley's face. "It's hard for her y'know? Her school is so far and sometimes I show up late to pick her up when the trains or buses are delayed. I can't blame her, I'd be angry too if I had a shit moth'a." Harley said with a sad laugh.
"She's a kid Harley, kid's are always angry for the dumbest things. She'll come around, who doesn't want to have you for a mother anyways?" she said before pressing a comforting kiss to her temple.
"Thanks Red." Harley whispered with a small smile forming on her lips.
A doctor came in thirty minutes later and gave Pamela the 'go ahead' for her to head home. "Pammy don't strain yourself!" Harley hollered, she was guiding the woman carefully down the corridor towards the elevators. The last thing Harley wanted was for her girlfriend to get injured again. "Harley I've got a head injury not a leg injury, I can walk perfectly fine without your assistance." she reminded her as the blonde nodded and nervously let go of her.
The entire walk down the corridor was nerve wrecking, she could feel Harley's eyes on her the entire time. When they reached the elevators she let out a defeated sigh, "Okay maybe you can hold my hand." she said trying to hide her smile. Harley immediately perked up and nodded, her hand grabbing onto hers and lacing their fingers together. The ride home was quiet but the atmosphere in the taxi was light and happy. Harley was absolutely ecstatic that Pamela was out of the hospital.
That meant that she didn't have to see her in the hospital looking sad anymore. "How are you Harley, really?" Pamela asked, she knew this woman more than anyone and she wanted to know how she was truly feeling. For a moment there was silence as Harley tightened her grip on her hand. "I'm just really glad you're okay Red, I don't know what I'd do without ya." Harley smiled with tears in her eyes. She was truly grateful that Pamela was alive and well. The taxi dropped them off in front of Gotham Academy just in time for the bell to ring.
A flood of students came sprinting out seconds after the bell had rung. The two women stood there, Harley on her tippy toes trying to find her daughter in the crowd. "Calm down Harley, she'll be out soon enough." Pamela said placing a hand on her shoulder and pushing her down to stand on her flat feet. Fifteen minutes later once the crowd thinned out they spotted the young girl slowly walking down the steps. She had her head down, one of her pigtails had fallen out, and the scrapes on her knees made it quite evident that she had fallen or been pushed.
She looked up when she was a couple meters in front of the two, her green eyes were a mix of surprise, sadness and excitement. "Ivy!" Melody yelled running over and wrapping her arms around her waist. It felt like she was hit by a freight train with how fast the girl came running at her for a hug. "Can we go home now?" she asked looking up at the two women. Although the girl was hurt she couldn't suppress her wide smile.
"Okay baby, let's go home." Harley said looking down at her with a fond smile.
Later she would ask about what happened but for now they were going to head home as a family. That was something - a title that the two of them have been starved of receiving for too long. They haven't been a part of a family for so long but now they were and it felt like the little piece missing inside of Harley's chest was finally filled - they was home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Walk, glance around, walk, look back, this was her routine when walking to the university. Dick wasn't always able to drive her whenever she needed to go to one of her classes. However she was always on high alert, John could be anywhere around this city. The psycho could be right behind her for all Zatanna knew. She was only able to finally breathe when she took a seat in her class. It was quiet, today was another work period thankfully. Lately she had been distracted - John Constantine haunted her like a shadow, he was always there no matter what.
It had been months since he had kidnapped her but it was now beginning to dawn on her how bad it truly was. Dick urged her to tell him what happened but whenever she tried to speak about it she would choke up. She knew he would never hurt her but if he ever raised his voice or his hand to reach out to her she would flinch. Of course she didn't mean to but when she did ultimately flinch he would immediately pull his hand away as if she had scorched him, a sadness would fill his eyes and he would frown at her.
Now that Mar'i was gone the apartment was quieter and the girl that used to keep her busy was no longer there. Her mind was left to whittle away at itself, dragging out memories she so badly tried to bury within the deep recesses of her mind. The nightmares were getting worse, she would wake up screaming and thrashing about underneath the sheets. Dick would get punched, scratched, and kicked yet he still put up with her.
Zatanna wouldn't blame him if he wanted to break up with her. Hell, she couldn't even make out with him without freaking out and bursting into tears. When she arrived back at their apartment she was surprised to see a bouquet of assorted flowers on the table and a box of caramels. "I thought I'd surprise you, how was class?" he asked hugging her from behind, as soon as she tensed up he let go of her.
"Sorry." he quickly said with an apologetic smile.
The flowers were all sorts of colours, mostly different shades of pinks and yellows, that didn't make the gesture any less thoughtful. "It was fine." she mumbled while slipping her bag off and hanging it on the chair by its strap. He raised an inquisitive brow before pressing a kiss to her forehead. "You know you can talk to me about anything Zee, right?" he said as she nodded and let her eyes flicker to the floor. Her heart began to hammer in her chest when he reached out and took her hand in his.
This was Dick, her boyfriend, she shouldn't be nervous around him. She knew that but she couldn't help it sometimes. Nonetheless she pulled her hand away and wrapped her arms around herself, almost as if she were shielding herself from some dark force. "I've been having nightmares about my time with him. I can't walk a few feet outside without looking around to make sure he isn't following me. I can't - he's made me scared of you Dick, of you!" she said in a shaky voice, however near the end she was practically bawling her eyes out.
When he pulled her in for a hug this time she didn't flinch or pull away, instead she collapsed into his arms and began to sob. He picked her up and carried her all the way over to the sofa before sitting down with her curled up in his lap. "It's okay Zee, not everyone can wish away their problems y'know?" he whispered into her hair as she nodded. All she felt like doing was rolling up into a ball and burying herself away in the deepest darkest hole she could find.
She was shaking like a scared child - she missed her father, he would know what to do. The two of them were alone, both of their parents were dead. Bruce wasn't really the father figure Dick needed, he only paid for everything and made sure Dick never got into any trouble. He was grateful for Bruce taking him in but he wasn't the father figure he needed in his life. Alfred was more of a parent to him than Bruce ever was. "I just want it to stop, I want to forget everything he ever did. I just want it to stop hurting." she whispered in a soft voice.
There wasn't anything he could say to make her feel better and he knew that. The only thing he could do was be there for her and hold her when she cried. Dick wished she could stop hurting as much as she wished it. The pain he felt whenever she cried or screamed out of fear was absolutely crippling. If she kept bottling everything in like this she might just die, she needed to tell someone - anyone. "Can we talk about what happened to me?" she asked, she sounded so broken.
He agreed maybe too fast, he never got the full details of what that bastard actually did to her. There were bits and pieces but he could only imagine what had happened to her when she was with that monster. She climbed off of him and to the other side of the sofa, grabbing a throw pillow and hugging it to her chest. As soon as she opened her mouth everything began to spill out, all of those horrors rolled off of her tongue like it was nothing.
What she said to him, it was worse than anything he could've imagined previously. A piece of him wished he had never known in the first place. There were no tears, she had no more left to shed. Zatanna was so tired of crying, she couldn't bring a single tear to roll down her cheek. They sat there for hours and by the end of it there was nothing but silence between the two of them. Dick was horrified by everything she had told him, he understood now why she was so jumpy and scared.
Of course he knew that what happened to her made her like this but he didn't know the details until now. This only made him want to kill John even more now. The sun was beginning to set behind the buildings now, even the beauty of the setting sun couldn't make the situation any lighter. "Thank you for listening, I'm just going to head to bed, alone." she said, her voice was barely above a whisper when she spoke. He simply nodded, he wasn't going to follow her he knew she wanted her privacy. "Goodnight Zee." he said from the sofa.
Before she left the living room she turned to look back at him. "Goodnight Dick." she said, her voice was scary dull when she spoke. Like a ghost she swept out of the room making it seem like she hadn't even been in there for the past three hours, almost as if she hadn't existed at all. The bedroom was like how she left it this morning, bedsheets messy, dirty clothes littering the floor, and the curtains still shielding the light from seeping into the dark room. This was just how she liked it.
As she slipped underneath the blankets she rolled up into a ball and pressed the side of her face into her pillow. It was quiet but if she strained her ears enough she could hear Dick turning on the television in the living room. So she focused on that, anything to drown out the silence, For if she laid in it for too long, the nightmares would come back and this time she wouldn't know if she could hold back the tears. Even with him gone John Constantine still tortured her to no end.

Becoming a doctor was harder than it looked, a pediatrician to be more specific. It was fitting since she was going to be a mother in a couple of months. Today she was going in for another ultrasound just to see how the baby was doing. The last thing she wanted was for the baby to be hurt in anyway. "Don't be nervous my love, everything will be fine." Kaldur said bringing her hand up to his mouth and kissing it. The nurse didn't even warn when applying the cold gel to her stomach, the sheer chill of it sent shivers down her spine.
Roquette was far too focused on the nurse's face to look at the monitor, she just wanted to see if the nurse was nervous or not. If the nurse was nervous than she was going to be nervous which was the last thing anyone wanted at that moment. "Two babies, you're quite the lucky two to be having twins." the nurse said with a fond smile. Her head immediately snapped to the side to look at the monitor.
Her husband looked visibly pale to hear this news. "What do you mean twins? The doctor said it was just one baby!" she yelled pushing herself up into a seated position.
"Sometimes it's hard to tell, the other fetus may be directly behind the first child, it makes it difficult to tell until they move apart." the nurse explained as calmly as possible.
After a multitude of questions and reassurances from the nurse they left the hospital. The both of them didn't utter a single word until they arrived back at their place. There were so many things going through both of their minds at once that they hadn't even thought to speak yet. When he shut the door behind them a smile broke onto his face, Kaldur had such a handsome smile. "We're having twins." saying it aloud made it even more surreal for him.
Having one child was a blessing but two made him all the more excited and nervous to be a father. Before she could say anything he picked her up and spun her around, she could only smile and laugh. "We're going to have to double everything Kal. I mean diapers, toys, clothes, even another crib." she said smiling up at him. He simply leaned down and kissed her as a response, Kaldur kissed her like she was his oxygen. Twins brought a whole new meaning to being parents.
They already knew that this was going to be twice as difficult than originally planned but they had faith. Everything was still so crazy to them, they were going to be parenting twins - twins. She didn't know if she should tell her friends that they were having twins now or leave it until the baby shower. Megan was coming by later this week to hash out the details for the baby shower, they knew that it was going to be sometime next month. She rubbed her hand over her baby bump and smiled down at her stomach. "You two will be great." she whispered before Kaldur placed his hand on top of hers.
The two barely got any sleep that night, they were too busy freaking out because they were having two babies. "Should we create a list of names now? I mean before we decided on Kai for a boy or Oshun for a girl but what if it's two girls or two boys?" she asked tiredly. They were both lying in bed facing each other, although it was dark she could still see him perfectly.
"Hmm, I guess a list would be required for this situation." he whispered, she could tell he was smiling.
He reached forward and pushed her hair behind her ear, his hand ghosting over her skin as he pulled his hand away. They were both happy for once and there was no crisis in sight, no matter what they always seemed to bounce back from whatever was thrown at them. Maybe that's because they've both experienced some crazy things, Roquette more than Kaldur. She never spoke about her family to him, it was an untouched subject. She just hoped it would stay untouched until the end of time. Her husband respected her privacy and never asked her about them.
That was a whole other mess she didn't want to subject her children to, that sort of crazy was not meant for a child. Most of her was a mystery to Kaldur, maybe that's what intrigued him about her in the first place. Her past was one big fat question mark and he was just dying to know who or what ruined her life in the first place. Perhaps she would tell him later in life, perhaps not - time would tell soon enough.

"Oh god I'm so sorry!" she yelled apologizing profusely as she dabbed the persons shirt with a napkin.
"Don't worry it's fine, ladies fall for me all the time." the man said with a wink.
Megan couldn't help but blush as she cleaned the coffee spill off of the table. This wasn't one of her better moments when it came to working at the diner. "Again I am really sorry sir." she said with an apologetic smile. This really was her fault for not paying attention. He gave her a flirty smile before the taller man sitting across from him flicked him in the forehead. The taller man gave the shorter one an annoyed look, "Dude do you just forget you have a boyfriend?" he asked. She couldn't help but giggle at that, this guy really seemed like a player.
From the counter she could hear Peggy snickering at her situation. This guy reminded her of a younger Dick Grayson. "Can I get you anything else?" she asked, she was really hoping they would tip her at the end of their meal. However the probability of getting tipped was incredibly low since she spilt coffee on the guy and all. "Do you have any pie?" he asked, Megan eagerly nodded. This diner had the best pie in Gotham in her opinion. She jotted down the pie order in her little notepad before walking back over to where Peggy was behind the counter.
Her friend looked like she was just dying to say something to her in that moment, the ring of the bell however stopped her from saying anything, probably for the better. The two young woman's eyes were drawn to the dark haired man standing by the entrance. He looked quite dorky, the hot kind of dorky though. His dark hair a mess, squared glasses made his blue eyes pop, and the whole dress shirt and jeans combo made him look even more desirable. "You've got to be kidding me." Peggy said, jaw dropped as she watched him walk over to where the other two men were sitting.
"Take the pie and go eavesdrop for me." she whispered pushing the plate of cherry pie into Megan's hands.
"Don't you have a boyfriend?" Megan retorted as Peggy gave her a little push.
"What he won't know won't kill him." she shot back before going back to cleaning the counter.
Megan walked over and gave the three gorgeous men a bright perky smile, a lot of people said she had a nice smile, she hoped they were right. "One slice of cherry pie, can I get you anything else?" she asked while placing the plate of pie in front of the short brunette. The dark haired man seated next to him narrowed his eyes at him in a sharp glare. They began to glare at each other for a good minute. It got quite awkward very fast and she didn't really know what to do with herself.
These guys were the only people in the diner at the moment, it was late, not a lot of people came in this late at night. She still had to work for another hour, Peggy and her were in charge of locking up today. They were going to walk back to their dormitories together, safer in numbers and all that stuff. Walking in Gotham alone at night was something no one should ever do. A lot of people her age end up going missing and wind up dead, she watches the news on her phone in the morning.
Most of the reports were about someone being missing or found dead, there was hardly anything happy anymore. "Are they always like this?" she asked leaning towards the taller of the two. If he stood up she wouldn't even be up to his shoulders, she was either really short or he was just really tall. Conner was tall, six foot, but this guy must be at least six four at the tallest. "Yeah, you should see them when they're arguing over what movie they're going to see. I'm Sam by the way." he said holding his hand out for her to shake.
"Megan, Megan Morse, and good to know." she said with a light hearted laugh.
Sam seemed harmless enough, he gave her the three orders soon after that - one deluxe cheeseburger, one bacon cheeseburger, and a garden salad. The food didn't take that long to come out from the kitchen, Peggy even helped walk it over to the table. She may or may not have wanted to see these three hunks up close. "Anything else you can just holler over for either of us, you can come pay for your meals up at the counter when you're done." Peggy said with a smile as the two of them placed the dishes down onto the table.
Megan spent most of the next twenty minutes cleaning tables, she didn't want to stay any later than she needed to. It was quiet, every now and again she would hear the men laugh at something or their volume would rise for a brief moment. Twenty minutes later Sam walked up to the counter to pay for the meals, she flashed him a smile while printing the bill. "Okay, cash, debit, or credit?" she asked as he smiled and dished out some money from his wallet.
The other two left moments later, she heard the bell over the door ring, leaving Sam to pay for the entire bill. "Friends of yours?" she asked as he shook his head.
"No just my idiot brother and his boyfriend, we're visiting for a couple weeks. You'll probably be seeing a lot of us, apologies ahead of time for anything my brother does." he said as she laughed and shook her head.
"He doesn't look that bad." Megan said as she glanced at the two men lingering outside.
"You clearly haven't seen him drunk doing karaoke." he said before handing her the cash.
They bid their farewells and they left soon after that. There weren't many customers after that, the next hour went by much slower. Finally after getting the last person out Peggy and herself locked the diner up. There weren't many buses around this time of night and the dormitories were an easy hours walk from the diner. "How are you and Steve?" she asked curiously. Peggy hadn't talked about him much lately, she was actually kind of worried.
Peggy looked up at the sky and let out a dreamy sigh, clearly things were still going good between the two of them. "He's absolutely lovely Megan, you should have dinner with us and his friend one night it would be great!" Peggy beamed, she knew that look and immediately Megan shook her head. This was one of her ploys to try and get Megan to go on a double date. She already told her countless times that she wasn't up for dating at the moment. "Oh please Megan, Steve is really trying to get him to be happy. One dinner date, for me?" Peggy was giving her the puppy dog eyes now.
It was hard to say no to her, especially if her boyfriend wanted to help his friend. Megan couldn't say no to helping someone. "Okay fine, one double date and that's it." she agreed- reluctantly but that didn't stop Peggy from jumping and throwing her fist into the air. Megan rolled her eyes and continued to walk down the sidewalk. Twenty minutes later the roaring of an engine came down the road, the car actually slowed down to ride alongside them. At first they thought they were going to get cat-called, that usually happened on the way home from work. "Hey Megan, it's me Sam!" the man called out from the drivers seat.
The car stopped and the two young women stopped and raised an eyebrow. It actually was Sam and in the back was his brother and his brothers boyfriend. She had yet to learn their names. "Do you two want a ride? I mean I'm taking them back to their motel room so I really don't mind." he said with a kind smile. They turned towards each other and began to whisper whether they should go with him or not. "Should we go with the hot guy?" Peggy asked.
"I mean we met him earlier, he seems sincere about it." Megan reasoned.
"Sure, we'd love a ride." Megan then said as he smiled and nodded.
Peggy got to sit in the backseat with the two drunken messes while Megan occupied the passenger seat. The drive was quiet for the first two minutes, save for the drunken whispers and giggles coming from the backseat. She had to suppress a laugh when she glanced back at Peggy, who looked unimpressed, in the mirror. "So what do you do?" Sam asked out of nowhere as he ran a hand through his hair.
"Majoring in history, Megan over here is becoming a baker." Peggy said winking at her friend in the mirror.
She didn't understand Peggy's obsession with trying to get her a boyfriend. They just met Sam - and didn't Peggy just make her agree to a double date with her boyfriends best friend? "Cool, I'm going to law school in the fall." Sam said, so he was going to be a lawyer. He definitely seemed smart enough and good looking enough for it. They began to chat, Peggy asked several questions about law school and the two drunks she was sat next to. "Oh that's my brother Dean and Cas." Sam said, better late than never for the introductions.
They arrived at the university sooner than expected. Both of them were thankful for the drive, it was much quicker than if they were to walk back. Also much safer, they hated walking through Gotham at night. "Well thank you Sam, drive safe." Peggy said blowing him a kiss. The redhead rolled her eyes and elbowed her friend in the side, sometimes she was ridiculous. "Yes thank you Sam." she said as he smiled and nodded.
"No problem, we'll probably be seeing you again soon anyways." he said as they smiled and nodded.
The slick black car drove off after that, the engine was the only thing they could hear once the car was out of view. They began heading towards the dormitories, Peggy opened her mouth to say something, too bad Megan spoke first. "Not a word Ms. Carter or I'm not going on a double date." Megan said as her friend stuck her tongue out at her.
"You're no fun anyways." she said childishly as they entered the dormitory, her friend was unbelievable sometimes.
A/N: Yes a lot of stuff happened this chapter and yes, I am trash for the Destiel ship. I just love those two so much it hurts.
