Chapter 52
She could feel her heart beating against her rib cage. The butterflies had awoken within her. She didn't look like much at the moment. Her long dark hair was pulled back into a ponytail. She had borrowed an outfit to wear from Harley. It wasn't exactly what she would normally wear. The outfit was rather sporty. Especially in this weather. The taxi driver gave them strange looks when they got in. "Hiya darlin', care 'ta give us a ride to the heart 'a Gotham?" Harley asked flashing in blue eyes at the man.
He simply nodded and pulled off. The scenery blurred past them. Her gaze was stuck to the window. Melody tugged on her hand lightly. "Are you going to get to go home now?" the girl asked as Zatanna snapped to her attention. She could see the sadness in her eyes. "Yeah, yeah I am" she said as the young girl nodded. Raising her hand she touched the window. Melody climbed over her, sitting on her lap to look outside.
The young woman could only chuckle. They entered the city, the building's towering over them. "Do you live up there?" Melody asked when they stepped out of the taxi. There was a lump sitting in her throat. The cold air nipped at her exposed skin. It still ached to walk; then again she wasn't fully recovered. "Well here ya are" Harley said with a sad smile.
They had all really bonded since she's been with them. She understood their life, their pain. Walking over she hugged the blonde tightly. "Come up with me. Trust me you've done so much and I want to help you back" Zatanna whispered with a small smile. Without their help she would be dead. She could have either bled out or froze to death. But they saved her.
Walking into the front lobby the man who usually greeted her looked like he had seen a ghost. All he could do was stare at her. "Are they upstairs?" she asked. The man could only manage a small nod. The elevator ride up was unnerving to say the least. Her heart was hammering in her chest by now. Chills washed over her body. She was going to see him, see them.
When the doors opened she hurried down the hallway. It was early in the morning. The sun had barely risen over the horizon yet. Raising her hand she knocked lightly. She took a shaky breath. Melody and Harley stood off to the side watching. Zatanna knocked again, now just a tad louder. The door suddenly opened as she looked down. Mar'i stood there with a glass of water.
The girls eyes went wide as she dropped it. The glass shattering upon impact with the hardwood floor. "Mom?" she couldn't believe her eyes. Perhaps it was another dream? She jumped up as Zatanna grabbed her. She bit the inside of her cheek to fight of the burning pain. "Yes baby it's me" she said, her voice cracking. Tears clouded her vision as she held the kid close to her.
Taking a deep breath, one hand smoothing down her dark hair. All the girl could do was cry. She placed her down on her feet. "Come on, please come on" Mar'i said grabbing her hand and dragging her inside. Making sure to avoid the shattered glass. They stood in the living room. Her eyes widened, he walked into the room tiredly. Rubbing his eyes as he yawned. "Sunshine what happened? I heard something break" he mumbled tiredly.
She raised her hand covering her mouth. Knees buckling as she tried to keep her balance. A wave of emotions washed over her body. The last time she spoke to him was when she thought she was going to die. He saw her standing there. At first he looked around to see if this were real. His mouth went dry as he just stared at her. "Zatanna is that-" she ran towards him.
Jumping up and wrapping her legs around his torso. He held her tightly, his face pressing into her neck. For a moment he just breathed her in. Made sure that she was actually here in his arms. "I, I thought I was going to die. I thought I was never going to see you again" she cried out as her tears stained his shirt. He placed her down on her feet.
Hands resting on her shoulders as he looked her over. Bruises and cuts that were still healing covered her body. She wiped the tears from her eyes but they wouldn't stop falling. "I should have said this before but I love you so damn much" he said before capturing her lips with his. Shock flooded through her body. She hasn't felt his lips against her's for what felt like an eternity.
Zatanna never thought she would kiss him again. Let alone hear him breath those words to her. He mumbled 'I love you' with every kiss. Finally they pulled away for air. "Your mine Zee and nobody else's. As soon as I find that prick I'll make sure he'll be begging to be sent to hell after I'm finished with him" he said as she nodded. Leaning in she kissed him again. Just relishing in the feeling of him.
Everything about him was so pure. It was real. She was home and she hoped to stay here forever.

Whispers went around the city. None of the stories were confirmed as true however. She rolled over in bed. A smile drawing at the corners of her lips. She didn't have to open her eyes to know who it was next to her. Well more like under her. She nuzzled her face further into his shoulder. Her fingers dragging across his chest. "Arty do you know how early it is?" she heard him mumble.
His hand moving to rest over top of hers. A pair of emerald eyes fluttered open. He could see the top of her head. Smiling he pressed a light kiss on top of her head. The sun had barely made it over the tops of the building's. Right at the point where it blinded him when he looked its way. "Thank god for weekends" Artemis mumbled to herself.
Grey eyes fluttering open as she sat up. One arm holding her up while her other hand was still on his chest. The red head stared up at her. Nose crinkled adorably and eyes barely opened. Freckles dusted his skin, one of his many features that she adored. That and his red hair. Wally always complained saying that he hated it. But he would be caught dead if she ever saw him try to dye it.
That wouldn't go over well in his favour. Especially since his girlfriend was so obsessed with his hair. "I'll be back, need a drink?" she asked with curiosity swimming in her eyes. Reaching up he brushed her hair behind her ear. "Milk. Is that hardcore enough for you?" he asked as she rolled her eyes. Standing up she stretched her arms out. Walking towards their bedroom door.
As she opened it she looked back at him. "So hardcore West" she said with a dashing smile before leaving the room. She could hear the television on in the living room. "So what are you two doing?" she asked leaning over the back of the couch.
"Being adorable" Bart said with a smirk.
"Oh really?" Artemis said quirking an eyebrow.
"Yes really. We're always adorable twenty-four-seven" he said with a smile.
All she could do was shake her head lightly. Her smile becoming bigger and brighter. As she was pouring two glasses of milk her phone buzzed. It had been charging on the counter overnight. Peering over she saw the notifications. It was from the newspaper and other social media outlets. Her eyes narrowed as she read one of the notifications.
"Could Dick Grayson's mistress be back from the dead?"
"Walking corpses around Gotham?"
"Reports of Zatanna Zatara outside of an apartment building earlier in the morning. Sources say she's back from the grave and drop dead gorgeous"
For a moment she didn't know what to believe. It was almost as if she were in an alternate universe. She stared straight at her phone. The white glow illuminating her face. She felt something cold hit her feet snapping her from her trance. Jumping she stopped pouring the milk. The counter was now covered as well as the floor. Without even thinking she grabbed her phone and ran to their bedroom.
Bursting into the room she jumped on Wally. He groaned from the sudden weight sitting on top of him. "Artemis what the hell" he groaned as she shoved her phone into his face.
"Holy shit" he breathed out.

They sat there on the edge of her bed. It was funny because this is what happened last time. Except they weren't drunk this time and knew full well what they were doing. There was something irresistible she found about him. It wasn't just about his looks because that was a bonus. Everything about him just intrigued her. "What are we even doing anymore?" she asked with her head in her hands.
This was still so confusing they. The two of them were still trying to figure everything they out. There was definitely something between the two of them. It was just so unexplainable. "I don't know, but I like it" he said with a smug smile. She jabbed him in the side with her elbow. Sitting up she took a deep breath. Trying to keep her gaze locked onto the painting on the wall.
Otherwise she would be staring at him the entire time. If that happened then this whole situation would start again. Not that she wouldn't mind it but she needed to get things straight. "Is this a mistake?" she asked, mostly to herself.
"If it is it's a good one" he answered.
She could only sigh. His hand grazed her back sending chills through her body. Turning her head she reluctantly looked at him. Taking a deep breath she tried to get a handle on herself and her emotions. He leaned forward until his forehead was rested against her's. She's never seen eyes as blue as his before. "Conner I swear to god I'll kill you" she said as he smirked.
"Then kill me" he said before kissing her.
All she could feel was his emotions clashing with her's. It worked so well, like a symphony. Maybe he would be the death of her?

A sigh escaped her lips as she stood in front of the mirror. Leaning forward against the counter as she put on dark red lipstick. Almost a maroon by the looks of it. She was hot and dangerous today. Slipping on her jacket she headed out. It was a saturday which meant no classes for her. Which was sort of a relief. Any other day she would be scrambling to get work done.
But now she could relax, hopefully. Whispers had been travelling around Gotham since this morning. People were saying someone was 'back'. Which could mean anything at this point. So Megan just decided to ignore it. The bell chimed as she pushed the door open. Heels clicking against the tile floor as she walked over. "What can I get you today?" the woman at the cash register asked.
Megan pulled her sunglasses off and looked around. There were so many different things she could order. All of which made her mouth water. "Hm. I'll try the peppermint pattie frappuccino and a cinnamon twist donut" she said as she took out her wallet. The lady nodded and smiled accepting the money. Standing off to the side she waited. Soon she was given her order as she walked out.
She swore people were staring in awe. After all today she was hot and dangerous.
A/N: Hello! Okay so I have a question. After this book, by the way I'm not saying this one it ending yet, but should I just end it or continue on but with their kid's? 'Cause who knows, drama doesn't fall far from the tree. I don't know though, just a question. Have a good day or night!
