Out of the Storm
Yona held her books tight to her chest, hoping that noyak would see her. She walked through the halls of the School of Friendship, going to a portion of the school that was barely used by students at all. But it was still well-mentained. The crevices were cleared of cobwebs and the floor was as shinh as always, but there was always this certain chill in the air. Yona didn't mind it, though. This was the only place she could meet her best friend outside of her little friend group known as the Young 6.
"Hey, Yoyo!" A Griffin with light brown feathers landed behind Yona just in time to see her turn around.
"Gina!" Yona exclaimed.
"Yeah, so I got to get to class," Gina said, looking at the wall. She could see her reflection clearly in them and she slightly ruffled the pink feathers on her head.
"But Gina always to Yona during recess," Yona said, quite disappointed, if she were going to be frank.
"Yona really missed Gina as well! Gina was 'busy' for a week," Yona said, adding a slight sarcastic emphasis on busy. Gina certainly wasn't going to stomp on their one chance to hang out again after a very long time.
"Yeah, well, sorry, Yona," Gina said, "You know how I'm always busy with the group project nowadays. Bye!"
Gina sped out of the hallway, leaving a distraught Yona in her wake. Yona sighed. She was tired of getting stomped on everyday. And what was with the neverending group project? Yona had one, too, but they managed to finish it in five days. Gina was way smarter than her, so she could've finished her project in an hour with her eyes closed and her claws tied behind her back.
But for some reason, she still wasn't finished.
This thought repitively stomped on Yona as she glumly walked towards her next class. She was sad that Gina wasn't in any of her classes but she knew the she had this talk with that Griffin a million times.
"Oh, I just can't tolerate your friends," Yona mimcked Gina's high-pitched squeaky voice which almost sounded like a rat. But it didn't, since this was Gina and Gina was her friend. After all, Gina was the only other creature that still stood by her after the Amity Ball incident.
Yona sighed as she took a sit on one of the dusty wooden tables in Professor Applejack's classroom. Prof. Applejack always insisted on them, since it gave her a slight feeling of home, but the dust bothered Yona. There wasn't a single speck of dust back at home, though it was more of snow.
She was so busy sulking that she almost didn't notice that Silverstream entered the classroom and took the seat beside her. It was Applejack's voice that made Yona notice her best friend.
"Silverstream, would ya kindly stand up," Applejack said.
Yona's eyes grew wide as she noticed that Professor AJ was already in the classroom and that her very happy Hippogriff friend was standing tall a proud, a smile plastered on her pale pink face.
"Yes, Professor?" Silverstream asked.
"Yer late now, aren't ya? Now what d'you say?" Prof. AJ asked.
"I'm sorry!" Silverstream beamed. Applejack sighed, shaking her head back and forth, but chuckling while she did so. Silverstream had always been one of the more energetic students.
"Alright, Silverstream. Ya can sit down na, I reckon," AJ said, then turned to the rest of the class, "Now ah want ya'll to grab yer essays and continue writin' 'em. Ahm up for advice but just remember that ahm not the best when it comes to this 'ere stuff"
Applejack started her usual pace around the room, passing Yona as she did so. Yona quickly brought out her essay and continued writing. They had to write about something they kept from their friends for a really long time and once they were done, Applejack said that she'd organize a huge meeting where everyone would just exchange essays with their best friends.
Now, naturally, Yona wanted to write about something she never told the Young 6, but she had no idea. Until she remembered Gina. Gina. The Griffin who stomped on her just for a stupid project. Yona shook her head. She couldn't be thinking about Gina like this. She had to remember all the good stuff and write it down on the paper so hopefully they would all be friends. But still, Yona felt stomped on. And her sad face definitely caught the attention of one of her other best friends.
"Yona?" Silverstream asked, "What's wrong?"
"Hm?" Yona asked, "What? No! Nothing! Nothing's wrong!"
"Ya sure?" Silverstream's brain was flooded with pity. She had never seen Yona so sad, not counting the Amity Ball incident.
"Yes," Yona snapped. Silverstream looked dejected, but then she just shrugged and continued to work on her essay, which was more of a compilation of every single anxious thought she had on her mind.
Yona turned to her essay, as well, a bit guilty for snapping at one of the sweetest creatures in Equestria, but she couldn't help it. She didn't want to talk about Gina. She wanted to talk to Gina, and get the entire I'm too busy for you mess sorted out, or else it would just stomp on her for her entire life.
:
Yona packed her things and slung her knapsack over herself, struggling a bit.
"Bye, Professor Applejack!" she said, walking out the door. Applejack smiled and turned towards the last student left in the classroom for a while.
"That's what ya get for coming late 'ere, Silverstream," Applejack said with a small smile. She was used to hanging out with Silverstream after every class. It was almost as if Silverstream was always late just to have detention. She smiled as Silverstream finally got up from her seat and submitted her essay and she happily flitted out the door.
The hussle and bussle of the School of Friendship hallway soon engulfed her like a wave and students of all shapes and sizes and sexualities walked all around her. Each huddled in their own little friend groups. Some were just chatting about their life, while some were walking to their next class. Silverstream found Smolder in the throng of students and quickly fell into step with her towards the next class.
:
"Hey, Yona," Smolder said, sliding into the seat beside Yona. She brought out her notes to review for Kindness. Professor Fluttershy may be kind, but the Kindness Catch-ups she made each time were cruel examinations. With barely any time to review beforehand, so Smolder made sure that she came to Kindness class early, every time. She looked over at Yona, who was glancing out the door worriedly. There were still students flitting out and about out there. A lot more than the students who were already in class. Those were savoring their recess time, but the creatures in Smolder's class were glued to their notes. Everycreature, that is, except for Yona.
"Something's up," Smolder said, "What's wrong?"
Yona looked at her friend, a bit happy with the question she asked. She didn't like the usual Are you okay? She thought the question was silly. If she knew that the creature you're talking to was definitely not okay, then why would she even ask that. She supposed it was a kinder way to say it, but she stilk didn't like it.
Yona wanted to reply to Smolder. Badly. She opened her mouth, but her brain was holding on tight to her words. She contemplated this. Could she actually tell Smolder about Gina? She knew how unpredictable Smolder could be. She could blow up like a volcano. Or just freeze like the lakes in Yakyakistan.
"Yak have a lot to tell you," was all that was able to roll out of Yona's mouth.
Smolder adjusted her stance. She placed all her notes back in her bag beside her, but kept a notebook she used to draw in everyday, something embarrassing that she never wanted to tell her friends. Okay, well, maybe not never, but she didn't want to tell them just yet. She pushed her chair backwards and tilted her body slightly to the right, facing Yona. She placed her arms under her head, sending a short burst of pain through her body, but she eventually got used to it. Dragon scales were strong. Then she finally placed her feet onto her desk.
"I have all day," Smolder said, smiling.
Then they did the telepathy trick that only best friends did.
But we still have the test, they both said to each other through their friendship telepathy.
I don't care, they replied to each other.
So what if they missed an exam that was probably important to their grade? They were happy enough just chatting like old friends. Smolder smiled again, showing Yona that she was comfortable and that she could began her tale. Yona's brain gears went spinning, wondering where she should start. Then she just realized that she should start from a very basic starting point.
"Yak met this Griffin friend named Gina," Yona said, and was pretty sure Smolder lost her shit.
Smolder immediately fell from the chair. The notebook on her table fell. Numerous sheets of paper exploded everywhere. Smolder scrambled to pick them all up, knocking her chair in the process. She was just about to pick a sheet of paper up from the floor to see herself confronted by two yellow hooves. She looked up in terror, Fluttershy's confused face staring down at her. Smolder smiled awkwardly. She immediately grabbed the paper and slid back into her seat. Her eyes scanned the toom to see where the other papers have landed. Two of them to her right, past two seats, and two were directly in front. She looked to her left to see a student looking at her sketch of her dream outfit. Smolder couldn't help but die inside.
And beside her was Yona who was able to save three of her papers. The papers were littered all over her fur, clinging like spider webs.
"So... ummm... may we begin now? Please?" Fluttershy asked and looked across the room. A murmur of agreement rose from the students. She mentally counted the students, and counted again just to double-check, muttering the numbers under her breath. All her students were present and acounted for. She began giving out the Kindness Catch-up papers and sat on her desk, but these exams were never quiet. But she didn't mind. She allowed her students to be as noisy as she liked. She wasn't worried about the cheating, either. It would mean that the students are good friends. She smiled.
"So tell me more about this 'Gina,", Smolder said, turning to Yona. She didn't really care about the Kindness Catch-up. She was genuinely intrigued with what the Yak had to say.
"Gina was a really great friend. Gina saved me from so many bullies," Yona said, concentrating on her Kindness Catch-up, subconciously replying.
Smolder smiled. "Gina sounds like a nice guy"
"Except for the part Gina stopped talking to Yona," Yona sighed.
"Wait. What?" Smolder leaned a little back, taken aback with how that girl could just stop talking to an amazing Yak like Yona. She scrunched up her eyebrows in concern, urging her to continue.
"Gina didn't really stop talking to Yona," she replied, finally turning away from the exam to look at Smolder. She hoped that Smolder wouldn't hurt that Griffin. She was still her friend.
"Gina just told Yona Griffin was busy," Yona continued, turning back to the test and fingered her pen.
Smolder took a long pencil from her red pencil case - "In truth, it's a dark pink, but Smolder always insisted it is red," Gallus once said - and she broke it into half with rage.
"That bitch. If I ever come across her..." Smolder said, staring at the blackboard in front. These were not promises written in lava, oh, no. They were promises written onto pitch black volcanic stone.
Yona's eyes widened in fear. "Dragon friend,
please don't! Yona knows Gina will come around eventually"
"Alright," Smolder said, focusing on the test again.
:
While Yona walked to the usual spot she met with Gina, she couldn't help but wonder whether she'd be busy. Again. The week had dragged by and she was anxious to see Gina again. She was glad she told Smolder about this. Smolder had just given her a pep talk and Yona couldn't be any more grateful for it. She even told Smolder that she was going to meet Gina later.
And right now, there's no Griff in sight.
She looked around her, but the Griffin she was anticipitating was not there. Not a single sign of her.
Until she saw a flash of pink.
"Gina!" Yona yelled happily, running over to the pink.
Gina chuckled from her hiding olace and finally turned around to face Yona.
"You miss me?" Gina asked. Yona hugged Gina tight, something they always did whenever they'd meet. Their meetings were limited so they were usually happy to see each other. Usually. Because the Griffin she'd been waiting for wasn't hugging her back. Or even smiling. Gina swiftly shoved Yona off her, and Yona just stared back, dejected.
"Personnal space, please," Gina said, waving her claws, indicating Yona to move backwards. Yona tilted her head and raised her eyebrows in concern and disgust, but complied nonetheless.
"One foot" Gina said sternly.
"Now I got something to tell you," Gina said, and for the first time, Yona saw a smile formed on her beak, "So you know Clay and Geo? I swear, they're gay for each other"
"Really?" Yona said, her eyes twinkling, "Tell Yak more!"
"Oh, I can't tell you much. But we were playing a game of Truth or Dare," Gina said. Yona tilted her head. How did the friendship classes reach that? Gina shook her head in reply.
"Doesn't matter. So anyway, it was Clay's turn and Coral dared him to make out with Geo. Not kiss. Make out, " Gina said, putting emphasis on the last two words, "So Clay wasn't going to be a chicken and he looked Geo straight in the eye and, Great Griffin's Beak, he just looked so seductive doing that, and I wished I was the one he made out with instead, but that's beside the point
"So Clay gripped tight onto Geo's feathers and just kissed him right then and there. Then they were on the floor. I swear, Clay was gripping Geo and was pulling him so hard to himself and, oh my Grover, that was, like, the hottest make out session in the middle of class," Gina looked at the ceiling of the hallway dreamily, more than fond of remembering the way that Clay's lips would brush against hers.
"I swear, I'm very jealous of Geo right now but then they just look so cute together!" Gina said, "Remember the stories I told you about Clay and I?"
Yona shook her head. All she could remember was that Clay was Gina's closest friend before herself. Yona didn't really understand what Gina said about the make out session. Gina was nineteen while she was fourteen, and Yaks didn't mate until forty. She listened to Gina's talk anyway.
"So during the first ever class at the School of Friendship, we sat beside each other and we would always talk. And our lips were actually touching whenever we talk. It's weird, but I like it. It's like a little make out session every time we talk. I guess that's how I started to become talkative. I can remember how sometimes I'd just lean a little more forward and then he just kisses me back. He said he likes me and all but he's gay and he kisses me back just out of pity, but you won't believe what he just told me after class. He just said that that was his first make out session and he liked it, so he was seriously going to consider asking Geo out, but then he said that he'd like to have a make out session with me first," Gina giggled so much that she fell towards the ground. Then she purposely sprawled out her claws and paws across the floorYona smiled, happy for her friend.
"I asked him why and he told me that it was because he felt bad for never going out with me before. And that I was a really great kisser and he was willing to kiss me one last time, and I will make that his best make out session ever, and I'm really looking forward to tasting him," Gina licked her beak hungrily, starving, "I should go. He told me to meet him in his room by 12:30. Bye!"
Gina waved at Yona and speeded away, leaving a dumbfounded Yak standing in the middle of a school hallway.
:
Yona ran through the halls of the School of Friendship, and endless hallway before her. But she knew what was the end of the hallway. Other than the window, of course. She skidded to a stop, nearly tumbling through the window with a breathtaking view of the garden, but she managed to find her footing. She just stood there panting heavily. Once whe caught enough breath, she faced the door to her right and knocked on it.
She stood there and waited for the door to open. She counted mentally. She knew that the pony inside that door always took a long time. But after a full minute of counting and staring at the door, no one answer. Yona knew something was up. Again. She sighed and let herself in. She was not all that surprised to see that Sweetie Bell was there in place of Rarity. And she never thought that Sweetie Bell enjoyed being neat. She silently watched for a short while while Sweetie tidied up Rarity's desk which was full of papers.
"Sweetie Bell, where Professor Rarity?" Yona finally decided to ask. Sweetie looked up from her job.
"Huh?" Sweetie Bell asked, a bit dazed from having to clean the office for so long, but her senses finally came to her, "Oh! She's on a Spa Retreat with Applejack!"
Yona sighed. First she couldn't find Smolder anywhere. Now this.
"Is there anything else I can help you with, Yona?" Sweetie Bell asked.
"No," Yona shook her head and turned to open it. As the door opened, Yona found herself staring right into two sparkling turquoise eyes.
"Quit staring at my eyes, will ya?"
Yona finally looked down to see a dragon body full of orange scales.
"Smolder?" Yona asked, her head tilting to the side and leaning a bit forward. She couldn't believe it.
"Gee, I knew you were demisexual, but I never thought you were demisexual for me," Smolder said, crossing her arms but still smiling. She raised her eyebrows, waiting for Yona's reply. She knew Yona was a very proud demisexual but Smolder had always been worried that other students would pick on her. Which actually happened, by the way, Smolder thought.
"Where was Smolder?" Yona asked in a small voice. She was still so relieved that at least one of her friends hadn't deserted her.
"I was just brainstorming ways for you to stop being friends with Gina," Smolder said, shrugging.
"Why?" Yona said, doing the little head tilt again.
"Woah! Back it up there!" Smolder said, taking a few steps backwards, "It's just that I thoughg it was unhealthy for you. We learned that in Magic Class"
Yona tilted her head. Smolder was right. They did learn it. And it was unhealthy. And Smolder found a way to break free. Yona's gratitude for Smolder just seemed to get more and more.
"How?" Yona said, her voice giving away her excitement.
"To just tell her. 'Gina, Yak don't think Yona and Griffin should be friends anymore,'" Smolder said, impersonating Yona.
Yona gulped. Could she really do this?
:
Yona stood in the same hallway she just stood in yesterday, extremely anxious. She couldn't help but look around every so often, otherwise she'd be stuck staring at the same crack in the wall that they never quite fixed. It was a small crack after all. Then Yona heard footsteps behind her. She sighed slightly. This was Gina. Always want to make everything dramatic. Yona turned around and found herself staring at sparkling turquoise eyes. But these eyes didn't belong to a body of an orange dragon. These belonged to a body of a light brown Griffin with pink feathers in her head. It struck Yona that it was odd how Smolder and Gina had the same eyes.
"Gina, Yak doesn't think Yona and Griffin should be friends anymore," Yona said quickly, closing her eyes to not see Gina's reaction. Slowly, she popped one eye open, then the other. Gina was crossing her claws with a skeptical expression.
"Why?" Gina asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Griffin has Griffin's own friend group, and Yak has Yak's. Yona doesn't think that Yak and Griffin has to see each other anymore. Yona and Gina have separate happy lives," Yona said, moving her head about, a nervous habit.
"Are you sure?" Gina asked, tilting her head to the side. Yona nodded curtly.
"Well, okay then. If you say so. It was nice knowing you, Yona," Gina said, staring at the wall to her left, bewildered. She risked one last look at her old Yak friend which consisted of thirty seconds, then she turned around and flew away.
Yona let out a sigh of relief. It went better than she thought.
:
"Where's Yona?" Gallus asked the group. He looked around, but couldn't see the Yak anywhere. Just his other friends working on the same project he was. Ocellus was working particularly hard. She was already sweating from the effort. They had finished their project days ago but then she said that she saw the work of Bronchiole and hyperventilated.
Which was why at this very moment, he and the four of his friends were working on their diorama of the Tree of Harmony. The four of his friends, that is, except for Sandbar. He was looking around questioningly, too.
"Where is Yona?" Sandbar repeated Gallus' question. This time, everycreature stopped their work. Except for Ocellus. It was as if she hadn't heard a single word they said. She was setting up the cave for the tree by stacking small pebbles they found.
"I haven't seen the Yak anywhere," Silverstream said, shrugging. They all turned to Smolder who had a sly smile on her face. Gallus crossed his arms.
"Okay, little Dragon. You clearly know something we don't," Gallus said. Smolder opened her mouth to reply, but before she could get any words out, she was glomped by Yona.
"Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!" Yona was speaking so fast that the others had a hard time keeping up. Except for Silverstream. She could speak much faster than that. And except for Ocellus. She was still making minute trees to be placed on top of the cave.
"Your welcome," Smolder said only once, and clearly. She shoved Yona of her and sat back on her seat. Yona took the seat beside her.
"What happened?" Silverstream asked, placing down the paintbrush she was holding the entire time.
"Yak can't tell you," Yona replied, then looked at the project sprawled out on the table in front of her, "But friends still working on the diorama?"
"You're dodging the question," Gallus said, raising his brow, "What. Happened?"
Yona shook her head.
"Let's change the question then," Sandbar said, shooting a look at Gallus, then looked back at Yona, "Why can't you tell us?"
"Because only Smolder allowed to know"
"Why is Smolder only allowed to know?" Silverstream asked, placing her elbows on the table.
"Because Dragon helped Yona"
"With what?" Gallus asked.
"Yak can't tell you!" Yona shouted.
"Why can't you tell us?" Sandbar asked.
Yona screamed in irritation. She glared at her friends, who were all staring at her wide-eyed. Smolder pattes Yona.
"Yeah, I don't think that's the way to go," Smolder said, "You gotta tell them"
Yona sighed. And that's exactly what she did. She told them about how she and Gina first met. She told them about how Gina was probably avoiding her. She told them about how she ended it. Her friends listened to her intently. There were some snide remarks from Gallus, humurous ones from Sandbar, much to their dismay - Silverstream. She didn't like Sandbar's jokes - and enjoyment - Gallus. He enjoys seeing Sandbar being a goof, and encouraging ones from Silverstream. Even Ocellus stopped to listen every once in a while.
"We're glad you told us about her!" Silverstream said, hugging Yona.
"Why?" Yona asked.
"Because Gina was kinda mean so we needed to know about her," Silverstream replied. Yona sighed.
"Yona guess Yak should've told friends earlier," Yona said.
"At least you told us in the end!"

Hello, everypony! How are ya'll feeling? I hope you're all feeling great!
I had help from a friend in this chapter. Specifically all the Gina parts. She helped me write most of them. I would tell her Watpad account, but she doesn't have one. Just tell me to send her compliments, if you'd like.
Okay, it's official. Yona is an interesting character. She does not hesitate to say her honest opinion. She reminds me of Luna Lovegood, actually. Sweet Cele—Twilight, I love Luna Lovegood.
Smolder is now also an interesting character.
I think characters will remain interesting for me as long as there's something to think about them. And if I think about them a lot. A lot.
Well, I gotta tune out now. For a while.
Remember to spread the Magic of Friendship!
