It's been a few weeks since the whole paperwork deal and to say things were icy between Riley and Sam would be an understatement. Besides Sam talking to Riley regarding recon Sam hasn't talked to Riley much. Not for the lack of trying on Riley's part, for the first couple of days, Riley kept bugging Sam when they got to their tent but after seeing Sam turn away from Riley, he just gave up and gave what Sam wanted which was space. As much as it hurts Riley he hasn't talked to Sam about their relationship, because he's scared. He understands that he should've talked to Sam about it and now it's maybe cost him their relationship but Riley doesn't want that, he would do anything to take what happened back.
He lets out a sigh before he sits down on his cot staring at the back of Sam, he had grabbed the tasteless shitty coffee that they serve to help the soldiers wake up so they can be ready for anything, and Sam was still sleeping in so Riley had grabbed one for him but now he just had to wake Sam up, something that would go down easy in the past but right now it was making Riley nervous. "Would you stop staring at my back and just say what you want to say?" Sam said voice still croaky from sleeping, the voice made Riley jump slightly and his coffee spilled on his hand making him curse at the heat. "Fuck." Riley said placing the coffee down quickly on the ground so he wouldn't spill them because he knows they don't have anymore.
"What happened?" Riley watched as Sam rolled over and looked at Riley in concern. "You just surprised me and I spilled coffee on myself, I'll be alright," Riley says as he looks down at the welts starting to appear, he sighed and grabbed the one that's Sam's coffee and stood up walking over to hand it to the man before walking back over to his cot and taking a seat ignoring the ache in his hand. "You want to go to the medic?" Sam asks as he moves to a sitting position. Riley shakes his head making his grown-out buzz cut that no longer looked like a buzz cut shake slightly. "As I said, I'll be alright. Just let's drink our coffee." Riley moved his jaw before pressing his lips together bringing his coffee to his lips and sipping it.
Riley watched as Sam clicked his tongue before sipping his coffee and looked up towards Riley. "You know that we're still together, right? Sure what you did hurt and upset me but it doesn't mean that I love you anymore. I love you and I want to be with you forever but you went behind my back and started the papers to leave without telling me first. The fact that Palmer even started the paperwork without telling me is grounds for him to be written up if I wanted to do it but I don't want because I understand now why you did it, but I still wish you talked to me first." Sam spoke filling the awkward silence, Riley nodded slowly as he placed his coffee down on the dirt floor.
"I know, and I regret that so much, I was just scared. I didn't know if you really wanted it or if you just told me because wanted to tell me what I wanted to hear and I was scared of the answer. We haven't been together that long so I didn't know if you wanted that forever with me or not. I'm truly sorry Sam, I hope you know that." As he was walking Riley started to walk towards Sam until once he was in his arm's reach, Sam pulled him gently to sit beside him on Sam's cot. "I think that might be what hurts most of all, is that you didn't know you could trust me and I'm sorry for whatever I did to make you think that. I was serious about it." Sam looked past Riley for a second before grabbing his hand as he continued to speak. "If you are wondering, I told Palmer to start the paperwork again so this will be our last deployment, then once this is done you and I can our lives together. If that's what you still want?" Sam tilted his head and looked at Riley with a slight smile on his face.
"Of course, it's what I want, I never wanted anything more. What will change though is I promise to be more truthful and open. I don't want what happened to happen again, it was my fault and I can't apologize enough for that." Riley rambled on, he stopped when Sam rolled his eyes. "Shut up," Sam said fondly as he grabbed Riley's chin and kissed him on the lips, before letting go as Riley started to deepen the kiss, now wasn't the time. They had to wait until night to do that so they don't risk getting interrupted by something happening. As Riley pulled away from Sam he chuckled softly before moving his hand down to Sam's and grabbing it squeezing it softly.
"I missed you," Riley says looking at Sam through his lashes. Sam chuckled before running his finger across Riley's chin and gently moving his head so Riley was looking at him. "I never left, I'm sorry I iced you out. I just needed to do some thinking, and my Mom kicked my ass in her letters. She helped me understand where you were coming from, which led us to now." On one hand, Riley was embarrassed that Darlene knew what had happened between the two of them, on the other hand, Riley couldn't complain much because it led them to make up, and hopefully make out in the future, tonight if possible.
