Piano Keys
Jin waited on the front steps for Gracie to get home. When she pulled into her driveway he could tell by how she got out of the car that she wasn't in a good mood.
He stood up crossing the pathway to her and pulled her into a hug.
"How was your day?"
Gracie breathed in his cologne letting out a heavy sigh.
"Yoongi has been keeping a secret. One that Penelope told me that I didn't believe."
Jin looked down at her face, her bottom lip was poked out in a pout.
"About Jimin?"
"Jimin has a lesion on his brain. More specifically his frontal lobe."
"So he doesn't have the same problem as Hobi and I did."
Gracie shook her head.
"Surgery could help him... then again it could also make things worse. But knowing that there is a way that might be the answer. It makes me hopeful—"
"Why do I feel like there's a but to that?"
"Yoongi needs someone to sign the consent form. That someone being Penelope."
"The very person who tried to kill Jimin?"
"Yea."
Jin hugged her tighter, resting his head on hers.
"Do you think we can get her to sign it?"
"I don't know... but I have to try."
"We have to. You don't have to do this alone. I'm here."
Gracie's heart fluttered in her chest. This man always said all the right things. She tilted her face up towards his, standing up on her tiptoes, she gave him a soft kiss on the lips.
"We."
Jin smiled, not minding the fact that they were still standing in the front yard. No matter where they were he's happy so long as Gracie is with him.
"Have you eaten?"
"I was waiting for you. I thought maybe we could go get something."
"Hmmm... what'd you have in mind?" She asked, taking his hand, walking up to the front porch.
"How does ramen sound?"
"Delicious as always."
Inside the house, Gracie disappeared to her room. She found a pair of blue jeans and a white camisole to wear. Throwing a light green sweater over it to complete the outfit. She then braided her hair to the side and smiled at her reflection.
A light tap on the door startled her.
"Gracie... Yoongi is on the phone." Jin called. She opened the door letting him in. His eyes drinking up her appearance with a huge grin.
"You look beautiful."
Gracie blushed, taking the phone from him. He moved to sit on her bed to wait.
"Hello?"
"Gracie..." Yoongi's voice shook.
"What's wrong?"
"She can't sign the papers. I should have waited to get her confession. I should have—-" his voice broke in a sob.
"Yoongi—- what do you mean?"
"She— can't sign the papers. She—-wins again."
"No! Don't think like that! We will figure it out. Okay?"
Jin stood up, wrapping his arms around Gracie. The warmth of his body against hers calmed her nerves. She wanted so badly to help Yoongi. She just didn't know how she could help.
"Know anyone who is pretty versed with laws?"
Yoongi sobbed quietly on the phone. He didn't have an answer.
"Jin?" Gracie's eyes found Jin's filled with hope.
"Come to think of it... before Jungkook got big with his band. He studied to be a lawyer."
"Can you get a hold of him?"
"Anything for you." He smiled, pulling out his phone to call his friend.
"Don't worry Yoongi. We will find a way."
Light sniffles could be heard along with the shuffling of papers.
"Yoongi what are you doing?"
He didn't answer.
"Yoongi?"
"I—just want him back."
"I know... we are going to do everything we can. Okay?"
Jin hung up the phone.
"He's going to meet us at the Lounge on Blithe Street."
"Okay." Gracie hugged Jin, kissing his cheek.
"You hear that Yoon?"
"Yes."
"We'll meet you there."
Gracie hung up the phone, scurrying around her room to find her shoes. Then they both left the house heading towards the Lounge.
It had been a couple years since he'd seen Jungkook. He seemed to have packed on a good bit of muscle and his long curly hair gave him an edgy look.
"Wow, long time no see?" Jin chuckled, hugging his friend. Jungkook patted him on the back, eyeing Gracie who stood beside Jin.
"Who might this be?" He held out his hand, taking Gracie's placing a kiss on the back of it.
"Jungkook, this is Gracie. My girlfriend." Jin wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders.
Jungkook smirked.
"It's a pleasure to meet you. For a while there I thought he was going to be married to pots and pans."
Jin smacked his shoulder. They both laughed, moving along towards an empty table.
Gracie sat down beside Jin in the booth, his hand sliding into hers. She smiled up at him, receiving a kiss on her forehead.
"Ah no drunk friend tonight? Oh— who is this handsome man?" Mused the server. She had been the one to deliver drinks to him and Namjoon the night they heard Yoongi play. Namjoon was the only one to drink. However he was quite surprised she remembered him.
"I'm Jungkook and you are?"
"Heh— wishing I wasn't at work right now. Names Pasqual."
Gracie gawked at the girl's straight forwardness. She could never do something like that.
"Bummer." Jungkook winked at her. Pasqual licked her lips before turning toward Jin and Gracie.
"What will it be, darlins?" Her thick southern drawl coming out.
"I'll have water." Gracie replied.
"Make that two." Jin chimed in. Pasqual nodded, scribbling in her notebook, her eyes wandering to Jungkook.
"And for you?"
"Crown and coke, please."
"Mmm... " she mumbled, walking away to retrieve their drink order.
"Think she's got a thing for you."
"Don't waste your time." Yoongi's grumpy tone cut him off. Jin saw him standing just behind the booth where Jungkook sat.
"When did you get here?"
"I've been here... I've got a gig."
That explained the rustling of papers. They were music sheets.
"Who is this?" He gestures towards Jungkook who eyed him curiously.
"This is Jungkook. We think he can help."
"Right...I— uh. I got to go play now. I'll be back. Umm... I don't know you— but thank you." He hurried off down the stairs after he'd spoken. All three of them watched as Yoongi settled himself behind the ivory keys.
The melody that echoed throughout the lounge hummed of a desperate man fighting to find his lover hidden within the deep folds of his mind. The only ones to understand the sadness of each resounding note were Jin and Gracie.
"He plays beautifully."
"He does."
Jin nodded in agreement. Jungkook opened his satchel pulling out a few documents, placing them onto the table.
"Here are a few clauses that might interest you."
Gracie read through them all. Finding one that would actually work.
"This one."
"Yea that could work."
"Kookie, what do you think?"
Jungkook took the paper and read through it once more.
"Who would that be?"
"Yoongi."
"Right—- but isn't he the doctor wanting to perform the surgery?"
"Yes."
"Then he wouldn't be able to give consent for a surgery he would be conducting himself."
Gracie stared at the paper in Jungkook's hand. Her mind worked a mile a minute trying to figure out a solution.
"What about Dr. Riley?"
Jin pondered the suggestion, Jungkook shrugged. He didn't know who the doctor was.
"He could do it."
"We just need Yoongi to agree to it."
"Right."
Pasqual returned with their drinks, placing them on the table.
"Do we know what we're gonna have?" She winked at Jungkook.
"Could I have a spicy ramen bowl with steak?" Jin asked, putting an arm around Gracie's shoulders. She snuggled into his side with a content smile.
"Sure. And for you, sweetheart?"
"Chicken Alfredo, please."
Pasqual fluttered her eyes at Jungkook.
"And you, handsome?"
"Steak and steamed vegetables."
"How would you like your steak?"
"Medium rare."
"I'll have it right out for you."
Yoongi returned to the table, sliding in beside Jungkook. All three of them looked at his pale face with flushed cheeks.
"What?" He asked, looking from one to the other.
"We have a solution."
"Yes?"
"You can give consent. Due to the fact that you are a concerned friend and he's not in his right mind. He also has no other relatives to speak of and his once significant other is now in jail. That leaves you." Gracie smiled at him. Yoongi's face fell.
"I can't... I'm his doctor."
"Well, you see we thought of that too. You can't be the one to do the surgery. We both agreed that Dr. Riley would be the best one aside from yourself.
"The fuck he is!" Yoongi growled. Jungkook leaned away from the man.
"Look— he really is a great doctor."
"That man almost got me fired!"
"To be fair, you wouldn't get off the patient."
Yoongi narrowed his eyes, leaning back in the booth with his arms crossed.
"Had it been your best friend you would have done the same thing."
"Yoongi— stop." Gracie started. "Think about what's best for Jimin. Do you think waiting longer would benefit him? Or you, even?"
Yoongi's shoulders slumped. He knew what she said was true. The longer he waited the bigger the lesion would get.
"Yoongi you can barely sleep. You've poured over countless medical books and sleep studies all for what? To lose more sleep when you have a solution in front of you?"
"I see why you like this girl." Jungkook chimed in. Jin smiled. Gracie blushed.
"Please, Yoongi, be reasonable."
"Okay..."
—————-
A week later Yoongi had signed all the paperwork necessary for Jimin to get the surgery. Dr. Riley explained all the risks to him and promised that he was in the best hands. Yoongi begged the differ but he didn't make that known aloud.
With a pounding heart and worry filled eyes he watched as his best friend, his soulmate, his love disappeared behind the double doors.
