Min Dreamin'
Jin flipped the pages in his book while he waited. He found himself to be intrigued by the character Beth. Even close to death she never quit. Jin wasn't dying but heartache sure did feel like he was sometimes.
He could see why Y/N liked the book. Jin remembered when he bought her a copy of it. They would sit in the coffee shop near the bookstore and she would read while he commented on the different pastries.
"Mr. Kim, the doctor will see you now." The girl behind the counter announced cheerfully. Jin sighed, closing the book as he stood up.
Inside the room were odd pictures. Some that made no sense and others... down right terrifying. Why would a doctor have these?
"Don't be alarmed by the pictures. They are but nightmares dreamt up by patients before you." A voice droned from behind a leather chair that faced the only window in the dimly lit room. To his right was a lounge chair, much like one you would assume was in a psychologist office.
Slowly the chair swiveled around, revealing a man with disheveled dark hair, with spectacles on the bridge of his nose. He wore a black turtleneck and his hands rested neatly on his lap.
"My name is Doctor Min Yoongi, it is nice to meet you Kim Seokjin."
Jin ground his teeth. This man wasn't a doctor. He was a starving pianist who could be found at the lounge off Blithe Street.
"Is this some kind of Joke?"
The doctor cocked his head to the side as if confused.
"I made no joke."
Jin scoffed, "you're the pianist at the lounge off blithe street."
Dr. Min smirked. "Curious."
"What's curious? That you aren't actually a doctor."
Again Dr. Min smirked, getting up from his chair to walk over to the bookshelf with encyclopedias and sleep study books. Along with several degrees and an award. He picked up his doctorate degree from Harvard and handed it to Jin.
"Surely they don't just hand these out in crackerjack boxes."
Jin slumped down in the chair, scrutinizing the framed degree in his hand. He even went as far as searching what a degree from Harvard looked like on his phone.
"I uh—-sorry." He mumbled, handing the frame back to the man standing in front of him. He wasn't a penniless pianist.
"Now, I can tell you something that may set your mind at ease." Dr. Min spoke genuinely, while taking a seat back in his chair. Jin looked at him skeptically.
"I started playing the piano at the Lounge about two weeks ago."
Jin knitted his brows together.
"You only just woke up from a coma 5 days ago, right?"
Dr. Min leaned forward, taking a pen and paper from the desk, writing quickly. Jin nodded, his eyes watching the pen dart across the page.
"Has anything else occurred recently that seemed off or odd to you?"
"How do you mean?"
Dr. Min looked at him like he was stupid. Like he was supposed to know the answer without it being spelled out for him.
"In your coma I am a penniless pianist. You know of me and yet you know nothing about me."
"Oh—well yes. My wi—" Jin stopped. He didn't want to bring that bit up. But the cat was already out of the bag.
"Wife you say?"
"Yes..." Jin looked down at his sweaty palms. His nerves were shot and this doctor was weird.
"But she's not your wife in this reality."
Jin shook his head sadly. The ache in his chest forming once more. Dr Min continued to write, only stopping briefly to ask Jin more questions that seemed to lead nowhere .
"When do the headaches start?"
"When something isn't the way I remember."
Dr. Min nodded, setting the pen down.
"I'd like to run a few tests with you if that's okay."
"What kind of tests?"
"Standard procedures really." The doctor gave a vague response, taking a packet from his desk drawer and handing it to Jin.
"Here is a list of all the tests I would like to conduct with you. Some may seem redundant to you. Many you have already been through since you woke up. However, I will be the one to help you get the answers you are searching for." Dr. Min smiled. He was so sure of himself which put some of Jin's anxiety at ease.
"Sleep apnea?" Jin questioned.
Dr. Min chuckled, "Only the ones that apply to you. I highlighted them."
"How could you highlight them if I had not come in yet?"
Again the doctor looked at him like he was stupid. Then pointed to a manila file on his desk. Jin mentally face-palmed himself.
"Sorry."
Dr. Min waved his apology away.
"Don't worry about it. Now we can start as early as next week if you are willing. However, I want you to read over the material and—- here." Dr. Min handed him a notebook.
"I would like for you to write down what you believe to be reality and how this one is distorted from the one you remember."
Jin took the notebook. He wasn't sure if he wanted to write it all down. The pain of this reality was enough.
To write it all down surely would be devastating.
"You okay?"
"She is the most painful thing to write about." Jin frowned, running a hand over the cool surface of the notebook.
"Ah, well in the end some of our greatest pains become our greatest strengths."
Jin looked up at the doctor who adjusted his glasses. He was wise for a penniless pianist. Now he was just confusing himself. Sure the guy played piano, however he was also a doctor. So there was no way he was penniless. Unless he gambled... that was possible.
"Thank you... I will read over the materials you have given me." He murmured standing up to make his way towards the door.
"One last question before you go."
"What is it?"
"When you sleep do you dream or is it blank."
Jin didn't have an answer to the doctor's question. So he shrugged, leaving Dr. Min with a quizzical look upon his face.
In the lobby the girl smiled at him when he approached the counter.
"How can I help you?" She asked politely.
"Do I need to see you before I leave?"
The receptionist typed away at her computer.
"Not unless you need to make an appointment for a later date. Do you?"
"No I suppose not."
"Alright then, I Min dreamin' bout cha." She winked before turning back to the computer. Oddly enough she was the only one unfamiliar to him. She was completely new to him and that was a breath of fresh air.
He looked to see if she had a name tag. Of course she didn't...
"Uh, Miss." he spoke quietly. She turned to peer at him over the counter.
"Can I help you, Mr. Kim?"
"Uh... call me Jin. Could I ask what your name is?"
She raised a brow at him.
"It's for a survey." He added quickly.
"Oh... it's Gracie. But why would you need my name for a survey?"
"Customer review survey?"
"Are you asking me what the survey is or telling me?"
Jin chuckled nervously.
"Telling. Anyway, thank you for your outstanding service!" He then ran from the building without a second glance at the girl. He wasn't interested in dating her or anything like that. It was just the fact that she didn't fall into the category of someone who existed in his comatose reality.
Maybe they could be friends. Perhaps Gracie would be his saving grace.
