Hope
Jin stood there a bit longer than he should have. Pretty sure his legs were about to give out. A light tap on his shoulder stirred him from his thoughts.
"Jin?"
"Hmm?"
He turned around to find Hoseok standing there. He looked troubled much like Jin.
"What's wrong Hoseok?"
"He's been lying to us all."
Jin stared at him skeptically. Who's been lying?
"Yoongi said that I'd find the paintings. The ones from my alternate reality. All we had to do was get back there. But he lied... that's not possible is it?"
"I—uh. I don't think so."
"Why would he lie to me?" Hoseok cried. Jin didn't have an answer for him. One thing he had noticed since Gracie had revealed the truth was the memories fading. They slipped away like a thief in the night.
"Why does anyone lie?" Jin asked bitterly.
Hoseok went into the back room with a tiny kitchen. He ran some water into a kettle for tea. He hoped that the warmth of the green tea would sooth his pain.
Jin followed him, not really sure what he should do now. Everything he had hoped to be true had been ripped away with one sentence. Or was it several? Doesn't matter.
In a way he felt free. Like a curse had been lifted. His mind cleared of all confusion. Yet he still felt a small inkling of loss. Even though the only thing that came to mind was his scholarship to the culinary arts school. Alas that didn't feel right.
Jin sighed as Hoseok held out a cup of tea for him. He smiled, taking a sip of the warm liquid. Hobi sat down at the quaint little table.
"Your life turned out to be a lie... what of mine?" Hoseok mumbled.
"More like a dream, than a lie..."
"It's the same though." Hoseok argued.!
"And yet, it's not."
"What am I to do? How could I dream up these paintings? Am I supposed to paint them myself!? I'm no painter."
Jin watched Hoseok ramble on about the paintings he so needed to succeed. He wasn't sure how he could help him. What could he say?
"You could close your eyes and dance... perhaps dance blindfolded."
It sounded ridiculous to himself. However, the look on Hoseok's face told him he was onto something.
"You think that could work?"
"You never know unless you try." He encouraged him. Hoseok jumped up from the table, running out into the studio. Jin took another sip of tea before following the newly energized man.
Hoseok stood in the middle of the room with his eyes closed, raking in a deep breath then letting it go. He looked so relaxed, so peaceful, and very determined.
A steady beat began to play, bringing Hoseok's body into movement. Every move he made matched the beat.
He truly was an amazing dancer. He flew across the dance floor in every direction, arms swaying and hips rocking to the rhythm.
Beautiful.
That's what came to mind as Jin watched Hoseok.
Hoseok dropped to his knees as the song came to an end, resting his head on the floor. While his chest heaved up and down. When he sat up he was smiling so bright.
"It's perfect. Jin, you are amazing! Thank you." He beamed.
"Is it everything you hoped it would be?"
Hoseok nodded, standing up to start the song again. Ready to dance the night away. Jin watched him for a few more minutes. Hoseok's bliss was contagious with each step he took.
"I'll come by later to see the masterpiece." Jin waved goodbye to a giddy Hoseok.
Outside the wind had picked up. Leaves swirled in the night sky and random pieces of debris. People rushed along with the collars of their jackets turned up, trying to protect their faces. Jin on the other hand didn't have a jacket. Just the sweater Yoongi had given him to wear.
He could feel the chill of the air through the fabric making him shiver. All along the sidewalk, shops were rolling up their doors for closing. How could it be so late?
How long had he been standing there?
He waved down a cab, sliding into the back seat. It was warm and comfortable. The leather seat engulfed him in warmth. The young man smiled at him from the rear view mirror.
"Where to sir?"
"I-uh... uh. The dreamscope facility."
The man knitted his eyebrows.
"That's a popular place today. Is there an event going on?"
"Not that I know of."
"Huh..." the Cabi shrugged, throwing the car into gear then merged into the oncoming traffic.
Jin didn't know why he was going back there. It's not like Dr. Min could help him. That was evident in Gracie's confession. When the cab pulled up to the building. Dr. Min and Gracie were standing outside. Jin hesitated on getting out of the car.
"Are you getting out sir?"
"I uh—"
"Oh look— it's that sweet girl from before." The Cabi smiled a boxy smile.
"You think so?"
The Cabi looked taken aback by Jin's response.
"Do you not think so?"
Jin sighed, "I wouldn't know. My memories are lies."
"Make new ones."
"What?"
"I'm not the brightest crayon in the box. However, if your memories aren't what they should be. Make new ones and move on. No use dwelling on false pretenses."
Jin stared at the man. The man just shrugged and nudged his head towards the building.
"Go on now. Meters ticking. Would hate to charge you for being lost in your thoughts."
"Right..."
Slowly he got out of the cab. Both Dr. Min and Gracie looked over at him. She nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Which made him smile. Why hadn't he noticed that before. Even though the memories weren't real, the way he felt about her didn't change. Sure his memory of how she looked was different. However, all her mannerisms were exactly how he remembered.
"Y/N—err Gracie. Can I talk to you?"
Gracie's eyes fell to her feet. She didn't know what to say to him. Nor did she know what he wanted to talk to her about.
"Gracie?" He tried again. Dr. Min stood quietly with a small grin on his face. That's when Jin was reminded of Hoseok.
"Oh Yoongi."
He looked at him with an eyebrow raised.
"Yea?"
"Hoseok found the paintings."
Both Yoongi and Gracie gasped.
"What how? Where? Where did he find them? Who do they belong to?"
"They are in his memories. All he had to do was close his eyes. He's been dancing non stop."
Gracie smiled at Jin who returned one, making her blush. That was definitely a favorite of his.
"Why didn't he call me?" Yoongi grumbled, scrolling through his call history.
"He's probably still dancing."
Yoongi looked up.
"Oh."
He waved down the Cabi before he could take off, leaving Jin and Gracie standing alone.
A nervousness swept over Jin. Now that they were alone together he had so much he wanted to ask her. He just didn't know where to begin. Or if he wanted to.
His eyes drifted to where she stood quietly, rocking back and forth on her heels. Her red hair blowing every which way. Her blue eyes wander everywhere but in his direction. Jin sighed.
"Gracie."
She froze. Jin moved to stand in front of her.
"Why didn't you just tell me the truth?"
"I—- wasn't sure."
"Wasn't sure of what?"
"Yoongi said you could have been in an alternate reality. That if I were to tell you it was all lies your mind would break."
"You believed him?"
"He had all these studies. Nothing with tangible evidence until you and Hobi seemed to share memories."
"How come you look different than my memories?"
"I don't know Jin. I'm not in your head." She sounded frustrated. Which wasn't her intention. That was an answer she was trying to figure out herself.
"Do you even like me?"
Gracie's heart skipped a beat. That was a question she wasn't expecting to hear. She thought once he knew it was her he'd run in the opposite direction or worse. He'd be irrecoverably broken.
"I—"
"I mean it's fine if you don't. I just—"
"Jin— I don't like you."
His face fell before Gracie could finish. He started to turn away from her.
"Oh..."
"I— I love you." She blurted out, taking hold of his arm.
