First Rounds

"I start my first rounds as a registered nurse today." Gracie smiled, fixing her hair as she spoke to her twin sister. Although they didn't look that much alike.

"That's great! I hope you have a great day."

"I'm sure I will."

"You know you could make a living with your artwork, sis. You didn't have to be a nurse."

Gracie turned towards her closet door that was cracked. Inside were large abandoned canvases with an array of paints and pallets begging to be used. Her lips pulled into a tight smile, closing it. A dream she decided to give up after her dad had passed away.

"I want to save people."

Penelope sighed, standing up to hug Gracie. She knew her sister and father were close. That was her reasoning behind her new job.

All throughout high school Gracie would win awards for her paintings and crafts. For her to just put it away after getting a masters degree in fine arts. It just baffled Penelope to no end.

Her work paled in comparison to her sister's. People would stare at the mesmerizing designs while Penelope grew jealous.

The night their  father died, Penelope had found herself dancing with a man that knew how to move his hips

Every move he made flowed to the rhythm of the music, hypnotizing her. She became lost in the movements, forgetting all her troubles for that one night.

"Whatcha thinking about?" Gracie prodded, her bright eyes boring into her sister's.

"Promise me you'll continue to paint." Penelope stared back. Gracie gave a stiff laugh.

"If I have time." She glanced down at her wrist, then scurried from the room.

Before Gracie went out the front door, she smiled at her sister.

"Be safe tonight. Please." She almost sounded like she was pleading.

Penelope nodded meekly, disappearing into the quant living room.  All along the walls were pictures of them with their parents. Their dad holding their mom, smiling happily back at her from behind the glass frame.

That's all it took for her to find herself sitting at the local bar waving down the bartender for yet another shot of Jim Beam.

"We meet again." A man whispered in her ear. Penelope's eyes met a pair of warm brown ones. It was him. The man she had danced with a few nights before.

"Oh—hi."

"Care for a dance?"

Penelope shot back the last of the burning liquid and nodded.

"Lead the way."

He spun her out onto the dance floor, then pulled her back to him and just like that she was lost to the swaying of his body pressed against hers.

——-

"First day in the ER?" Dr. Min asked the girl with her unruly red hair pulled into a messy bun. Her scrubs hugging her thighs and backside nicely.

"Uh— yes."

He smirked, she seemed a bit shy.

"I'm Dr. Min. But you can call me Yoongi, if you want."

"Gracie."

"Want me to show you around?"

She scanned the hallway and the nurses station then looked up at him and nodded.

"Great, let's go."

They wandered around the Emergency Room. Yoongi showed her how to find the medicine and supplies they may need. Where all the extra gurneys were and how not to use a wheelchair.

By not use, he meant jumping in one and using it for a surfboard down the hallway. Until he got yelled at by security. To which he gave them the finger and proceeded back to Gracie.

After a while a call came in for a bad accident, several vehicles were involved. Two ambulances coming in with three casualties.

Two unconscious and one with severe chest pains and a few lacerations to their arm.

Gracie rocked back and forth on her toes. Dr. Min stood like a pale statue next to her.

"Should I get supplies?" She questioned him. Dr. Min eyes slowly moved to look at her.

"If you have to ask. You shouldn't be here." His tone was cold. Gracie felt the sting of tears behind her eyes. The embarrassment of it all. She knew that she needed to prep the rooms so they were ready. Why did she feel the need to ask.

Because he was the first man that didn't ask her for her sister's number.

Gracie ran off towards the supply closet, grabbing everything they could possibly need, based on the information relayed from the front desk.

Sirens wailed outside the hospital just as she finished.

A little out of breath, she stood beside the doctor once more. He didn't look at her again. They just stood waiting.

Once the doors opened, the paramedics wheeled in the first person from the crash.

He had a gash on his forehead near his hairline. The whole left side of his face bruised and he wasn't responding aside from having a pulse.

"We need to get that laceration taken care of and then get him in for a CT scan." The doctor called out. Gracie took hold of the gurney, wheeling the unconscious man into a spare room.

Carefully she moved about the room, stopping only to look at the man's face for some time.

He had a face worthy of royalty. For all she knew he could be.

"Stawp gawking at the patient and get him to Radiology." Hissed Dr. Min. His cool disposition washed away as a sea of new patients flowed through the Emergency Room doors.

"Ye—yes sir." Gracie stammered, once again scurrying to get away from the wishy-washy doctor.

She hurried down the hallway towards one of the X-ray techs leaning against the wall.

"I need a CT scan." She called out, pushing the gurney towards the door.

"Say no more fam." The tech winked at her, helping her wheel the patient into the dimly lit room.

The young man on the gurney never moved, aside from the steady rise and fall from his broad chest. The collar of his white t-shirt stained in light and dark shades of blood.

His face is that of a prince who appeared to have come from a long battle. In her mind she imagined him fighting off this fire breathing dragon, attempting to
save his long lost princess. Gracie wondered if he had someone whom he would refer to as his princess.

The x-ray tech cleared his throat, disturbing Gracie's daydream about the sleeping man in front of her.

"Oh—uh sorry." She bowed her head, stepping out of the man's way. Gracie then turned and walked quickly from the room.

She leaned against the wall just outside the door, waiting for the scan to be completed.

"He has a slight bleed on his brain from the skull fracture. But it doesn't seem to be affecting his brain function. There's no swelling that I can see. Be sure to pass that along to Dr. Min." The Tech said, pushing the patient back out into the hallway.

"Thank you."

Gracie hurried back down the hallway with the unconscious patient in tow and the envelope of scans tucked under her arm.

Around the corner she could hear Dr. Min's voice crying out in what seemed like agony. She quickened her pace, hugging the wall as she turned.

There two nurses were trying to peel Dr. Min off a  patient who appeared to be lifeless at a glance.

"Someone get security!! We need another doctor on the floor!"

Gracie looked around frantically with a quick glance to the man she'd been wheeling around.

"Uh... right."

Pushing the gurney up against the wall, she ran down the hall to the nurses station.

"We need another doctor and security!" She cried out breathlessly. Half regretting the tight pants she wore. They rubbed against her thighs so bad.

"What's going on?" One of the nurses asked, sipping her coffee without a care in the world.

"Dr. Min—patient— nurses can't get him."

Was all she could manage. Could be because she wasn't sure herself.

"Okay." The nurse sat her cup down, picking up the phone.

"Dr. Riley, you are needed in the ER."

She then pressed a button for the intercom.

"We need security on the ER floor immediately."

Gracie thanked her then ran back to the ER to take care of the patient she originally started with.

However when she got back the patient was gone. Dr. Min was fighting one of the security guards and the other nurses were pulling the patient out of the way.

She walked quickly up and down the hall. Where could that patient have gone?

"Excuse me?" Gracie grabbed one of the nurses arms.

"Have you seen the patient that was on a gurney over there?" She pointed towards the wall where she had left him.

The nurse pursed her lips, pulled out a tablet, sliding her finger up the screen a few times.

"I believe he was taken to floor B. He's going to be here a while."

Gracie sighed. How did they know that so fast? She literally just got the scans done on him. Which reminded her, they were still tucked under her arm.

"Seokjin..."

"Get Your hands off me, You spineless troll!" Dr. Min's angry voice ricocheted off the walls  throughout the ER.  Gracie could see him being dragged by two muscular security guards out of the building. Something told her he wouldn't be back in the hospital for a while.

His eyes locked on hers just as the sliding doors closed. He looked desperate.

Who was the patient?

Gracie took off in the direction the nurses had taken the other patient.

"Wait!" She called out to them. They both stopped to look at her.

"What's this patient's name?"

The nurse huffed, pulling out her tablet. She scrolled through a list on the screen and pointed to a name highlighted in blue.

"Jung Hoseok."

She frowned at the name. Gracie didn't know Dr. Min, but somehow this man was important to him. So she would do whatever she could to give him updates on him without breaking any laws.

"Can I take over the care for this patient?"

The nurse looked at her skeptically, then shrugged her shoulders.

"I would suggest getting a tablet to keep track of patients. Do you want me to check on the other?"

Gracie thought for a moment, shaking her head no.

"Thank you."

The nurse rolled her eyes, handing her the tablet she had been using before she walked off. Gracie stared at the screen. Both of the men who were unconscious had been in motor vehicle accidents. Both suffering from a traumatic brain injury with no signs of waking up.

What has she gotten herself into?
