Books and Ramen
Jin found himself staring hopelessly out the car window. All the streets looked the same as they did when he had been in a coma. Where everyone convinced him that he had been dreaming his whole life up.
Nobody could tell him why all the people he knew so well were actually alive and all around him. Yet somehow those closest to him didn't know them at all.
"Are you hungry?" Namjoon nudged Jin with his elbow. Jin let out a heavy sigh, looking at his best friend.
"Sure."
"Loony's sound good?"
"Yes, they make amazing shin noodles!"
Namjoon laughed, "how is it you know of this place? It literally opened a month ago. You just woke up four days ago."
Jin shrugged. It would seem that what happened here happened there. Which gave him hope.
They pulled down the street for Looneys. They had a line coming out the door. Which was always pretty normal. At least Jin thought so.
Namjoon climbed out the car, pulling out his jacket to throw on. The cool autumn breeze bringing about a chill.
"Need a jacket?"
Jin shook his head, walking beside his friend towards the door. A memory flashed through his mind, reminding him of the time when he came with Y/N.
For whatever reason the girl asked for ghost peppers in her noodles. When Jin asked why she got them, she told him that she thought they were shaped like ghosts.
To say the least, she was disappointed. Also her mouth was on fire after the first bite.
He smiled at the memory, then frowned. Jin missed Y/N. She always made the day so much better. Not that Namjoon doesn't brighten his day. He just wasn't her.
Namjoon went to the host to find out the wait time while Jin took in the scenery. Spider plants hung in pots outside the windows of a nearby shop, little kids chased each other around while parents tried to keep them in line.
Near the bookstore old men sat with pipes in their mouths as they contemplated their next move on a marble chess board. Everything felt and looked the same. However in this reality it wasn't.
Namjoon returned with a green slip in his hand.
"Twenty minute wait."
Jin simply nodded.
"What's wrong, Jin." Namjoon asked wrapping an arm around his friend's shoulder.
Everything. Jin wanted to say. Instead he settled for the usual response.
"I just have a headache."
"Do you want to just go home?" Namjoon looked at him concerned.
"No... it's fine. I just have to get used to everything."
Namjoon gave him a tight smile, glancing at the paper in his hand
"Want to look around the bookstore until our turn?" He gestured towards the building beside Looneys. Jin shrugged, walking in that direction.
Memories haunted him everywhere. When he walked into the store, the smell of the books hit him with a sense of nostalgia. There standing in one of the aisles stood Y/N. She was flipping through pages on a book. He smiled, making his way towards her.
"Hi, YN." Jin started. Y/N smiled briefly, then closed the book she was reading.
"Do you remember me?" He asked.
"Yes..." she muttered. It was almost as if she didn't want anything to do with him.
"Oh hi, you're the nurse from the hospital."
She nodded, a slight blush crept upon her soft cheeks. Jin sighed, he loved when Y/N blushed. She was so beautiful and breathtaking. However a pang of jealousy hit him. The color that spread across her face was not because of him.
Jin looked over at Namjoon, then back towards Y/N.
"You look pretty today." Jin blurted out, instantly wanting to shove his foot in his mouth. She looked at him like he said something weird.
Namjoon patted him on the back.
"Thank you." She regarded him carefully. "Well it's good to see you up and about. See you around."
Why was that so awkward? When he met her for the first time, she blushed furiously. Now, it's like he was the dorky kid in school who tried to ask the prom Queen out.
Why?
He turned to watch her leave the bookstore, setting the book she had been reading on the table just as she walked out. He didn't like this reality. He missed her so bad he could feel the ache in his chest.
Slowly he walked over to the table, picking up the book he went to the checkout counter.
"I'd like to purchase this."
The man behind the counter pushed his glasses up on his nose to get a better look.
"Little Women?"
"Uh... yes."
The old man quirked an eyebrow judging Jin.
"What, it's a classic!" Chimed in Namjoon. The man just smirked at them as he bagged up the book and handed it to Jin.
"Thanks..." mumbled Jin, handing the man his money.
Both boys left the bookstore, heading back to Looney's where the line seemed to have doubled. When they got to the door, Namjoon handed over the green slip of paper. The hostess smiled, gesturing for them to follow her.
Jin wondered if Benny worked here still... or would it be yet. He looked around for the short man with a slouchy beanie and oversized black rimmed glasses. The guy was a hipster at best. But he was one of the nicest employees here.
"Looking for someone?" Namjoon asked.
"Benny."
"Who's Benny?"
Jin just sighed. "Nevermind." Opening the menu to explore the options. He soon realized that it was exactly the same. How is any of this even possible? Is he dreaming?
Namjoon was empathic towards Jin. He didn't quite understand what he was going through. Life just kind of coasted along for him after the accident. He himself only suffered a fractured sternum.
The head injury that Jin sustained caused a good bit of damage, although all his memories seemed to be intact. But he seemed to be stuck on memories that never happened.
Namjoon wished he could help. Somehow, someway he would find a way.
"What looks good?"
Jin's face lit up. He knew this menu so well.
"Try the bacon shin ramen... you won't be disappoint—uh I mean it looks good." Jin rubbed the back of his head, awkwardly. Namjoon smiled as a boy with a slouchy beanie and thick rim glasses approached the table.
"Hi, I'm Benny I'll be your ramen specialist for the evening."
