二十八 unraveling the past

You were 16.
You had awoken in the middle of the night suddenly.
Sat up in bed, heart over your chest hearing your heart thud hard against your ribs.
You could feel it.
Something was happening.
You slowly walked down the hallway, and down the staircase.
The only noise, the sound of your footsteps as you walked down the hallway.
You stopped dead in your tracks when you found Shouga standing in the living room.
His gaze immediately flickered to yours as if he had been waiting for you.
"Oh my love, the time has come."
He smiled, as you approached him.
His rough hands held your face, as you stood in front of him.
And then-
The world seemed to stand still for a moment.
You looked down, at the black inky marks up and down your skin, your arms, waist, neck.
You were stuck in place, but you were completely calm.
He felt like a magnet- you were drawn to.
Your gaze flickered back to his.
"Shiina," he breathed out, his voice low.
"You will kill all of them."
"Destroy this whole town, and burn it to the ground."
"It will be like it never existed."
You sat up abruptly gasping for breath, your hand coming to your chest, that didn't seem to expand enough to take in the air you needed.
You couldn't breathe.
The room around you was spinning, as your chest clenched.
"Shiina."
The voice felt distant to you.
Your mind was reeling.
You leaned forward, fingertips gripping the sheets of the bed as you struggled to suck in air.
There was ringing in your ears, as the world around you was blurred.
"Shiina."
And then everything seemed to come into focus.
There was Law in front of you, gripping your arms, looking at you with a distraught look on his face.
You could feel your cheeks were wet with tears, dripping down your chin.
Your chest felt tight, and your breaths were short, yet you could finally manage to suck in a breath.
"What's wrong?"
"What happened?"
He remained gripping your arms as he sat in front of you.
You looked at him, a moment your breaths still coming out in short pants.
I did something terrible.
Would you still look at me the same?
If you knew?
You breathed out,
"Tell me something," your voice trembling slightly as you looked at him.
His eyebrows furrowed,
"What?"
Your voice was barely audible, hardly even a whisper,
"Tell me something about you."
"Something you've never told anyone."
"Something, so I know I can trust you."
He stared at you a moment, his hands still gently gripping your arms.
Hadn't he already proven you could trust him?
You knew about Flevance.
His parents, his sister.
Although he hadn't outright told you that. You had figured it out yourself in a way.
So you needed something else.
Something he hadn't told anyone.
Something no one knew.
His fingertips gently squeezed your arms,
"I was with the Donquixote pirates. For quite a few years... after Flevance."
His eyes searched yours, as if trying to read your mind.
Donquixote.
"I'm sure Shouga had told you at least some point about the Will of D."
You blinked for a moment.
"And those destined to be our enemies, will be put to death."
Destined to be our enemies.
"Shiina... you are the flesh and blood of the gods who created this world. Celestial Dragons."
"We are above all else."
You let out a shaky exhale,
"The D. clan is... those who are sworn enemies of the world nobles... celestial dragons."
He nodded.
So you knew then.
Of course you knew.
He then spoke, the words leaving his mouth as if he had wanted to tell you them,
"My full name is Trafalgar D. Water Law."
Of course.
Of course it is.
He continued eyes flickering over your expression,
"Corazon."
"Corazon, explained that to me when I was with the Donquixote pirates."
That name.
It sounded so familiar.
You finally spoke,
"Corazon?"
"Donquixote Corazon."
The air felt like it was sucked out of your lungs,
"Donquixote?"
Your voice was barely audible, "As in family to Doflamingo?"
"Yes. His brother."
He quickly added,
"But he wasn't anything like him."
"Like Doflamingo?"
"No. Nothing like him."
You went silent for a moment.
Your thoughts swirling, as you muttered,
"Will of D."
The D. Clan.
Sworn enemy of gods.
Sworn enemy of celestial dragons.
Sworn enemy of you.
You then looked at him,
"Law."
He looked back at you. You hadn't even realized his hands were still gripping your arms so tightly as he sat in front of you.
"Tell me what you're thinking," he rasped out.
I can't.
I don't know how to tell you this.
"I had another flashback."
You swallowed hard, not meeting his gaze as you stared off.
"Law."
Your gaze flicker to his, his eyes fixed intently on yours as the words left your lips,
"I killed them."
"I killed all of them."
He blinked clearly taken aback and confused by the words you were saying,
"What?"
"What are you talking about?"
You sucked in a breath,
"When I ran away from home- when I escaped, all I could remember was running away. Looking back and seeing the city on fire."
"I couldn't remember anything before that."
Your voice trembled, as words came pouring out of you,
"I just knew deep down it was something Shouga had caused."
"It was like my mind blocked out everything, and the last thing I could remember was running."
His gaze looked slightly disturbed, like his eyes were searching yours waiting for you to say more words, explain just what the hell you were admitting to.
"It was me."
Your voice trembled,
"I killed everyone."
"Men, women, children."
"I murdered every single one."
His voice was low, fingertips now sinking into your arms, despite your brain hardly registering it,
"What the hell are you saying?"
You felt a lump forming in your throat,
"My dream, I could see Shouga holding me-"
"-his devil fruit, curses- he used that and I-"
You could hardly get words out.
Your chest felt tight.
Hot tears streaming down your cheeks, once again.
"Shiina," Law's voice was calm and level.
You could feel that his hands had moved to hold your face. As though he was trying to get through to you, understand what you were saying.
"He told me to do it-"
"-and I did it."
Your words came out breathless,
"And when I looked back before I escaped, it was in ruins."
"As if it never existed."
Just like he wanted.
"Shiina." There was Law's voice again, but you couldn't calm down.
Your mind and heart racing rapidly.
And it wasn't any better for Law either.
This was just another reminder, another punch in the gut, that he really didn't know much about you.
Your powers, your past.
The first thought in his mind was wrapping his head around that you nearly destroyed a whole island.
How strong you had to be to destroy and bring a whole city into ruin within one night.
He wondered what more to your powers he didn't know. He had only seen you fight when you were weakened, and tired. He wondered about how much you were really capable of if you could cause such mass destruction at the age of 16.
The worst part was- he wasn't disturbed by what you had done- the part where you took the lives of innocent families.
The sinking feeling was at the fact he wanted to know more- he wanted to ask you to explain.
He just wanted to fully understand you.
Every part of you.
He wanted to tell you he accepted every part of you- good, bad, ugly.
He lowered his face closer to yours,
"So you were under some kind of hex- from Shouga."
On top of that he was curious about the man's devil fruit.
The man's name was feared around the world, yet almost no one knew what he looked like.
Let alone even what fruit he possessed, or what it did.
"I still killed people, Law. I still-"
Your voice was cut off when he pulled you into him, lips against yours.
He had a habit of doing that.
And it worked.
It ripped you from your panicked thoughts and made every worry around you fade, if just for a moment.
He could taste the salt of your tears as his hands held your face, lips moving against yours, slowly and deeply.
When he finally pulled away he spoke, his words breathy,
"You were forced to do something you didn't want to- because that sick bastard cursed you. He made you do his dirty work."
You let out a shaky breath.
He was right. You had been put under the powers of Shougas fruit.
Yet it still disturbed you to the core. Made you shudder internally, that you had innocent blood on your hands.
Innocent blood.
Thousands of lives.
Innocent families. Children.
That all thought they were safe under Shouga's rule.
Law could see the conflict on your face.
And while he didn't blame you for feeling disturbed about it- it also drove him insane to see you internally torn up like this. Over something that really wasn't your fault at all.
"Shiina, there are people in this world that are born with evil in them."
"That day I took you up that mountain, in the snow. I told you I wanted to get revenge on Doflamingo."
Yes.
I remember.
In all honesty it felt like that had been months ago.
When really it had only been a couple weeks.
"I remember."
He swallowed hard,
"Doflamingo is one of those people."
"Like Shouga- like many others out in the world."
You let out a shaky breath,
"Law, I wanted to believe he was good. I wanted to so badly. He showed me everything- he saved me. He gave me everything, put a roof over my head, taught me-"
He cut you off, "And he did it all for selfish reasons."
His words hurt.
Hurt bad.
Mostly because you knew it was true.
Law had known someone evil, and he knew from experience.
He had probably been used just like you.
"It just feels like all I've ever known- been taught, been told has been lies."
You said your broken voice laced with frustration
And resentment.
You were angry at the world.
And you had every right to be in your mind.
On the surface you felt like you had no right to complain right?
You grew up in an absurdly wealthy household. Although Shouga wasn't always around, your mother or a maid was. And meals, and everything in between were always taken care of. You had a private sensei, a teacher for academics, and had eaten a devil fruit which gave you incredible abilities, which was quite literally handed to you on a platter. To the outside world, it looked like you had no reason to complain.
Which was the worst part.
Because there was so much turmoil inside your mind.
Everything you had been raised to believe were lies. Even the way Shouga told stories- like the story of Flevance was twisted. He had brainwashed you into being his little clone. You were simply a puppet- a tool- and he treated you with love because he needed you. Because you were useful to him.
And it wasn't all love.
It was twisted, and there were more things you couldn't quite remember, but you had a gut feeling there was more. Your mind had just somehow blocked all of the traumatic memories. And now they were coming back to haunt you in the form of nightmares.
For one you knew he murdered your little brother. And why?
Kazuki had been his only biological child.
But that didn't matter.
Because if you weren't of use to him, you needed to be discarded.
He truly was evil.
If I wasn't of use, would he have killed me too?
The gut wrenching truth was probably.
But the fact was, you were of use. He needed you. And he would probably hunt forever until he found you.
"The world isn't kind, Shiina."
I know that.
I know.
You nodded your head, realizing your breathing had slowed and you were no longer panicking.
And Law was still holding your face.
A man that shouldn't bring me any comfort at all is somehow the only person that can seem to calm me down.
How?
A little over a month ago he was a stranger to you.
Yet something in you told you that you could trust him.
You felt as he pulled you down into his arms, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling your smaller figure against his chest.
You felt completely enveloped in his warmth.
He could feel you relax and allow yourself to be held.
You needed it.
Neither of you said anything else. The only sound, the noise of both of your breaths evening out.
He didn't allow himself to fall asleep, until you were.
Making sure you were sleeping peacefully, until his eyes fell shut and he drifted into sleep.
